Unfortunately, the characters have no idea. It's a spell of some sort, and you've never been affected by it before and those coming to your aid aren't familiar with it either. You'll just have to wait and see how long it lasts in the battle :tongue:

Out of curiosity, there must be some sort of rule about friendly-fire that takes players' armor into account. For example, would it be 20 - hit roll? So if Aliron rolls an 8, his arrow passes me (it's like a 12 vs. me) and misses its target. If he rolls a 6, that's like a 14 vs. friendlies, so now there's an arrow in Baldhart's butt.

If this is correct (or close), Aliron may be able to fire past friends without fear with all those crazy bonuses! (Or at least friends with better dex.)

My inclination would be to say that if the original hit roll fails, the missile has a chance of striking a single other randomly-chosen target within 5' (one square) of the original target: GM makes a new hit roll against that target's normal AC, and if it does not hit, it's a clean miss. This isn't as realistic as checking every target along the flight path, but it saves a lot of die rolls. Note that "randomly chosen" means it might hit a different enemy, if there are others within 5' of the original target.

Alternately, you just say a miss is a miss, and skip the possibility of hitting another target. It's faster, though it's even farther from realistic, and does little to discourage archers from shooting through their allies' backs.…

Considering the way the current battle is going, whatever makes a player least likely to get hit by an ally is good!

I'll tell you what I actually do, and I've done it since the AD&D days, though I've never seen it written. If a player shoots through enemies and rolls less than 10, I roll a d12. I treat the result like a clock (viewed from the point of view of the shooter) to see in which direction the shot missed. If there's a friendly target standing there, I roll a normal to-hit against their applicable AC to see if they were struck.

Yep, that works. Could use d8, if using square combat map… pretty much same difference. Stick with what you're comfortable with.

That's a cool technique. Is it something you came up with on your own?

I think so. I've been using it for a long time and it could have been another group member who suggested it. Also, I've run across other people who use some variation of the same idea. You can also get special dice that you roll to get arrows to show a direction of a miss and how far they missed by, etc., but I've never used those.

Yeah, I know. I'm hoping I can roll something to determine if it's a spellbook or not. Even if it's in another language there might be similar patterns of information, symbols and diagrams, etc. Mauve has seen a good number of spellbooks and not all wizards write in their native languages, some even make up their own - she, for example, coded hers. =P

I'm also hoping that the lizard's darkness spell is similar to the wizard's one so she might recognize it in the book... if it's a spellbook.

THE LIZARD SHAMAN

With Ankari and Hiljikki attending her, the reptile shaman is stabilized. She will not bleed to death as a result of her injuries, though she will never be the same again - her wounds were too great, and she was too close to death. Even magic healing has not repaired all damage. She remains conscious, watching Ankari and Hiljikki with darting eyes. You deem that she is well enough to speak, though for the moment she remains silent.

Regardless of how Baldhart feels, I'm glad this worked. Not just for the RP/info. This means we're capable of using band-aids when Rydh's magic is expended.

If the WIS check fails, can other attempts be made?

Spoiler: example

Sir Charles has 3 HP. He gets stabbed in the gut (4 damage) and drops. (HP = -1)

Sir Charles has -2 HP. None of his allies can get to him.

Sir Charles has -3 HP. Jasper the Wise startes bandaging the wound. (WIS check = 11)

Sir Charles has -4 HP. An orc punches Jasper the Wise in his bearded face while another kicks Sir Charles' fractured ribs. (2 damage; HP = -6)

Sir Charles has -7 HP. The entire party battles the two orcs. Jasper the Wise drops to the floor with his tongue hanging out, pretending to be dead so the orcs will prioritize his allies as other targets.

Sir Charles has -8 HP. Allies remove dead orcs that had fallen onto Sir Charles' body. Jasper re-applies bandages. (WIS check = 4)

Sir Charles has -9 HP. Jasper continues to tend to the wound. (WIS chek = 17)

Sir Charles is no longer bleeding to death. What's his status? Will he ever be the same again?

Rules Discussions

Any rules discussions or questions relating to what is happening in Dragon's Egg? This is a better place for them than in the main thread, just to keep things less cluttered there. People have been posting them in them Welcome to the Dragon's Egg Subforum thread, which is also fine, but I thought I'd make a thread specifically for that purpose

Potentially trivial question: would people sitting in a boat have partial cover?

I wouldn't be inclined to give them better than 25%: while only "half" of the target is visible, it's the half you'd normally aim at anyway. I'm not sure it even deserves that much—at least where a canoe is involved—but figured it was worth an ask.

Yeah, it makes sense that they would. I think 1/4 cover is about right. Maybe with a canoe it would be a little less, but 1/4 is easy to work with and I don't think it is giving them too much. I'll keep that in mind

It really doesn't change the outcome much, but I'm asking why Nod's shot wasn't counted and wondering if that turn was overlooked or if it was purposely cancelled because someone had to hold the torch.

I'm indifferent as to which solution is applied, but here are my thoughts:

A) Nod shoots the same trog as Aliron (it's the one I had him aim at in my post) so there is one more corpse, one less runner. Then he fires a poorly aimed shot that has a 1-in-12 chance (?) of either hitting Baldy, Mauve or the other running trog.

B) Nod is holding the torch and never fires. Same number of dead and fled, and no worries of friendly fire.

C) I'm not the GM, so if there are other options I didn't think of, well... the whole thing is totally your call anyway. A and B were just my thoughts of what I think makes sense - A if you accidentally ignored Nod's successful shot and B if you purposely didn't allow him to shoot.

Option A conflicts a bit with Mauve's actions. She decided to run after the injured trog because he was injured, providing her good chances of catchig him. If he's dead I'm not sure she would pursuit the others.

Interesting... because if Mauve doesn't chase, Nod wouldn't fire. The chase implied that the battle hadn't ended, which is why I went back and brought Nod in. Y'know... instead of going to bed or Skyping with my sister-in-law and not creating a mess with a risky roll.

I'm not sure if Mauve would peek around the corner because she needs to breath, I need to think about it but I'm a bit busy atm. Anything, to move ahead have her to help to kill the one who remained so her magical rolls won't be wasted.

You scared them off - not a waste! Anyway, if Mauve can move on her own just have her refuse Baldy's help if she'd rather not have it.
