I LOVE the books, the films are good but I don't think Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart portray the charcters very well :)

Buffy is never off topic for me! ;) Maybe, as a leader, she had to "get over it" so to speak, because Spike was her best fighter. But then again, she didn't need to be so friendly with him did she, and she eventually said she loved him.
She was never the weak, codependent submissive woman that Bella plays, and I think that still stands as the most important distinction between them. The attempted rape might serve to illustrate that everyone is vulnerable, and show her weakness in the position she was putting herself in (with her being the only one Spike could harm physically). I've no good answer as to how their relationship after that can be justified in character.

I think I remember either reading about this or listening to the commentary on this. Joss stated that the attempted rape of Buffy was really just the cultivation of how obsessed Spike had become. That there was a fine line between love and obsession and Spike crossed it when he tried to rape Buffy. And furthermore, I think the creators "justified" this relationship by making Spike leave and fight for his soul. Because he felt that having a soul would make him a better "man" and it was this reason that Buffy was in love with Angel (at least that's what I think Spike thought). Where Angel always viewed his having a soul as a curse (because it was) - he also never fought to get it restored permanently which I think is why Buffy eventually said she loved Spike because he really did "give up everything" for her including his more brutal vampiric nature which you could tell he loved - not that he was any less terrifying for it, and she would stake him in a heartbeat (hell, she killed Angel), but I think it was "the grand gesture". And even though she said it, Spike still didn't believe her, because who could really forget (much less forgive him) for what he had tried to do. As he had a "poet's soul" he was a lot more - gentle (in terms of their relationship) - in the seventh season that any season previously - even in the 5th season when he was in the beginning stages of obsession with her.

This is a good answer, and I agree with it for the most part. Spike did redeem himself, but as far as Buffy loving him after that, I still have trouble seeing that as being very likely to her character in light of what I was referencing in Twilight's Bella in the previous post. Perhaps this is just testimony to the complex characterisation developed in the show.

I recognize that Buffy derived from the main topic but if the conversation is going to continue, please keep it more closely intertwined with relation to or in contrast of Twilight. Otherwise, by all means, create a Buffy thread.

Thank you, ladies.

Sorry Behelit.....didn't mean to get so far off-topic.

Will try to remain focused on the topic at hand.....

Twilight fans and non-fans alike might like this re-imagining:

Luminosity | A Re-imagining of Twilight | By Alicorn

I was very impressed, and found myself actually identifying with and respecting Bella Swan (and I never thought I'd say that). I should warn that she's quite different from canon Bella, although the surrounding world is mostly the same bar a few details.

I know that its cool to hate Stephanie Meyers, but her Twilight books made me want to start writing. She makes me really care about her characters, and I feel like I actually know them.

Does anyone else here love Twilight? And why do people bash it?

Out of interest, why is it cool to hate Stephenie Meyer?

while Twilight is entertaining, it's not exactly well written.

Totally agree, loved the films so bought the books and if I hadn't known the story through watching the films, I'd have given up on Twilight by now, I hope the other three are better. In all honesty I have even skipped some pages, I found them so boring and her way of writing is just not very good.

Still adore the films!

Edited to add a Y to honest...

I'm in agreement with Xan, that stuff gets no love from this house either. I would rather watch paint dry than see the flicks, and I'd prefer watching grass grow than use the book as hillbilly TP.

Harsh but honest. Sorry.

Edit(added) To less this harshness I am adding that if you enjoyed it for ANY reason there is nothing wrong with it. :D

I haven't read the books or seen the movies. I am simply not interested in the whole vampire thing, and don't understand the appeal of it. In addition, I've heard nothing but bad things about the books in terms of writing quality. However, if other people like them, that's fine. They may actually encourage teens to get into reading, and lead them to discover other books and series that are of higher quality.

It got to the point that the books were so hyped up that I had to read to see if it was worthwhile. After fifty pages I had to put the book down as garbage. Is it just me, or does the main character, Bella, represent every adolescent-to-teenager girl's insecurities and she is just helpless in the tide of events?
Side note: Watched the movie. Laughed. "Say it." Pause. (Dramatic pause, that is). "Vampire!"

I tried to read the books and watch the movies, but just couldn't. I watched and read the first of each, but came away with total contempt for both. The girl character just sounded so... whiny and weak and just... stupid to me. The actress in the movie was just so bland and unable to convey any emotion that I just found her annoying.

I don't know if that's just a byproduct of me not being a teenager, though.

I am not sure if I posted this yet as I don't check this thread...ever, but this is the way the books and films should have ended:

Blade shows up.

I've seen all the movies, but never read them. I've only kept up with Reasoning With Vampires, because it's hilarious and sad to see just how many errors there are in those books.

In case you guys haven't seen this: LOOK, because it's hilarious! http://reasoningwithvampires.tumblr.com/

Once I watched the first two movies back-to-back. I almost cried and at the end of the 2nd one I had to get up and literally do jumping jacks because I ended up feeling like Bella: dead. The movies are just so dull and lifeless. The same tone throughout the movie and it totally left me depressed for a whole day.

Why people bash Twilight: If the books didn't become popular, they would be just another book (albiet badly written) maybe with a small, dedicated group of fans. But when books get famous out of the blue, they usually end up pretty bad. I haven't be around or aware of more than two, but my example would be: Eragon and Twilight, both of which suddenly popped up and then everyone either LOVED IT and swore fealty to it, or hated it and couldn't stand all the problems with them.

I read her first book on the recommendation of a person much younger than myself and I have to say that Meyer writes for that market well. I didn't care for the plot, characters or sparkly vampires but I can understand why it's popular. I won't ever bash someone like her or Rowling or Brown because they are obviously good for what they write and deserve the success they have. They have more of it than I probably ever will.

Now Eragon is mostly successful because the writer's parents pushed and pushed the first book, IMHO. I don't think it's particularly good and he definitely rips off Star Wars Episode IV and the hero's myth wholesale without any inventiveness. But then should we expect more of a teenager with far less life experience and reading under his belt than us? Now however things are different because he has written 3 books and should improve on his next go around provided he can grow out of his ripoff mode and try something a bit different. This I will look forward too with some reservations.
