Holy crap, have I got a lot to catch up on! D= I'm really sorry about being AWOL for so long. I honestly only expected to be offline for a weekend, maybe five days at most. Not two weeks! If I'd known I'd be gone for that long in the first place, I would have asked someone to cover my characters!

Anyway, I'm all moved in now, and the only thing missing is internet. For some reason my laptop doesn't want to connect to our network, though my sisters' both work fine. (I'm borrowing my little sis' laptop to post this.) I'm not sure how frequently I'll be able to be on until my laptop is fixed (whenever that happens to be), but I'll do my best to get caught up and try to rejoin the action ASAP. If anyone can give me a rundown of side quests and the like, that'd be great -- spare me a lot of time reading. XD

Again, super sorry for vanishing off the face of the interwebs. Thought I'd let you know I'm still alive. ^^;

Welcome back, Ireth!

***

Uff, I just arrived home after visiting an awesome festival here called "Biennial of the Book". My newest acquisitions:
The Blade Itself and the first two from The Kingkiller Chronicle. I also bought Tolkien's Roverandom but it isn't there, my sister took it with her by accident. I almost picked Elantris too, but it was too expensive at one stall and sold out at another.

I'm exhausted. x.x

Yup! They're fairly recent translations, I guess the publishers are taking advantage of the fantasy-stories-hype created by Game of Thrones success here.

The stall I intended to visit wasn't there this year, so, I had this money weighting on my pocket... When I saw these authors' works at a tempting price I had to take them, I'm needing to add some quality works to my list haha.

(Not that I care too much about reading in English or Portuguese)

Happy early birthday to the Dragon! :D

Soooo I officially have no idea what's wrong with my laptop's internet connection. It's not the browsers themselves -- Firefox and IE both worked fine when I tried them at Future Shop today. (Thank goodness I didn't have to pay again.) Clearly something is wrong with the router, but I don't understand why it would only affect my laptop. I've tried moving to various different locations in the house to find a hotspot, even right next to the router, but nothing helps. :/

Damn, only because Mauve will finally take an action. Good night and enjoy your little girl's birthday! I hope she's well trained on blowing out candles by now. =P

@Ireth, Did you try:

  1. Open the command prompt and ping something? Use the windows key+R, type cmd. A black window will open. Type "ping www.google.com". If it complains about not solving the host or something your laptop is definitely out of the network.
  2. In this case, what is your internet icon (near the)? If it's a grayed wireless icon with a x or *, it's out of any network. You should try to scan for networks and join the right one, then try plugging an ethernet cable to see if your network card is okay. If it works, you should try to find some other wireless network to connect. If you can't, time to update drivers, etc, but there is a good chance your wireless card is fried.

Well, if no one follows Baldy, she'll head straight to Mauve, so at least we can pick up from there.

(Replying via iPad now... Not a fun way to type, but my last post was short as a result!)

My internet icon - I assume you mean the thingy at the bottom right near the volume control button and where it shows whether the laptop is plugged in or not? It's two little blue computers with screens that flash alternately. Occasionally I'll get a little yellow triangle and a "limited connectivity" message. I know I have the right network,since I was there when it was set up, but this is baffling me.

I haven't tried that "ping" thing, but I'll give it a go. I hope something works -- I hate having to ask my little sis to borrow her laptop, even though she's been really nice about it. I'd rather have my own working properly. I've thought about taking my laptop over to the nearest library and seeing if I can access their wifi, but that might have to wait until Monday.

@Baldhart: Bwahaha. If you're thinking about borrowing Llucheden now, don't bother. Cadell took her with him.

@Nihal: Tried that ping thing just now, and it complained about the host. I'm not sure if I even have an ethernet cable, or where I'd find one. I've looked at all the other wireless networks in the area, since they come up when I look at where mine is connected, but they're all secure -- I wouldn't be able to use them if I wanted to.

Update drivers, huh? Blah. Guess it's time to back up all the things and go back to Future Shop tomorrow... :/

Um… pics. Yes. Eventually. Friends took photos. My wife and I were busy with hosting the party. She cooked an insane amount of food! I just… moved stuff. Stuff like food, drinks, tents, tables, chairs, presents, balloons (a lot of which went UP), and the umbrella stand that fell in the pool.

@Ireth

I'm not sure if the icon should be two computers, it used to be the default icon for older windows versions. Anyway, if when pinging the host name isn't solved you're out of the network or the router is barring your attempts. The limited connectivity icon also reinforces this idea.

Well, yeah, it's easier to take it to the technical support, they'll be able to do all the tests and diagnose the problem.

@Nihal: Yeah, I'm pretty positive it's just the router. Can't be the wireless card, else why would it have worked at the shop I took it to? Still, I'm not impressed. :/ Don't see why my laptop should be singled out. My older sis said the age of the laptop shouldn't factor into the effectiveness of a router. Mine's 5 years old now, but still running very well according to the technician.

Ireth - is the router set up to allow only certain MAC addresses? That is one way a router could discriminate against a single computer, and you'd have to add your MAC address to the router settings.

Also, did you send a response to my last PM? And if so, can you re-send, because I don't have one :)

Everyone - More coming this evening. This is the time of year when we have attorney and staff evaluations, and so it's a bit more hectic than usual.

Steer - I don't know what a MAC address is or how to add it to anything. If it has to do with Apple computers, then it's irrelevant, cuz we all have PCs. XD

I haven't seen a new PM from you since Saturday, and I did respond to that one. I can resend if it's that one you're talking about, but there's a 50/50 chance I'm the one missing something from you.

MAC address is specific to your hardware - your wireless card. It's not a PC or Apple issue. In the router settings, you can set it up to only allow access to specific computers. They way, only people in your household can get on your router, whether they have a password or not. If it is set up that way, someone would have to have done it, because it isn't the default, so I guess it's a long shot that it would have been set up like that and no one knows.

I'll check the PM again. I hit 1000 PMs and had to clear my inbox while we were exchanging them Saturday, and it dawned on me today that maybe I cleared it just as you sent one and it got caught up in that.
