Hey Steerpike,

For those of us interested in playing a cleric, will you be posting a list of deities in your campaign setting?

Hey Steerpike,

For those of us interested in playing a cleric, will you be posting a list of deities in your campaign setting?

Sparkie:

I am done traveling and getting some more classes up tonight. Humans basically follow a Norse pantheon. Demi-humans have their own religious structure. The thing about this particular world, however, is that it is not at all clear that the gods exist. They're not interactive in the world in that way, at least not in a sense that is provable. Human clerics believe their chosen deity provides the magic for their spells. Non-believers point out that the healing magic used by human clerics is elven life magic taught to humans of old. The elves follow that view as well. Apart from the healing/life magic, the magic used by clerics looks a lot like arcane magic, and the view among non-believers is that it is one and the same in origin.

For the truly devout, worship of a specific god will bring specific boons and/or taboos that the cleric has to abide by. You'll have a list of the primary deities, along with the benefits/taboos that come with them. A cleric who worships no deity, or is a pantheist, etc. is able to cast spells as well, despite the fact that they pray to no god for the spells.

Hey everyone. I have a couple more classes to post tonight. Then I will post rules about Magic (including spell lists) and an equipment list. That will allow people to finalize their characters. Finally, I will post an overview of rules for the game system itself, which will allow you guys to jump right in when we start next week. I will also post a brief background leading up to the start of the game, so those who wish can develop backstories that explain how their character came to be headed for adventure with the rest of the group.

I'm sure I'll make adjustments as I get used to everyone's play style. The game is meant to be open-ended in terms of player options, so again do not feel limited by what is written on your character sheet.

*flails* I can't seem to decide on a class for my character. I'm waffling between Illusionist or Ranger, or possibly Knight once that info goes up. The downsides of dealing with pre-existing characters who have a wide range of skills and abilities... *sigh* Cadell in his original incarnation is a Fae (in this RP he'll be an Elf) who has skill in both fighting and illusion-based magic. His stats are hard to figure out as well -- I'm very tempted to make everything equal, but I'm not sure how effective that would be.

Now you said we don't have Skills and feats. But do we have ability scores, (Con and Dex, etc) and if so how do we get?

I'm getting psyched about this game. I'm sure Steerpike will answer our many questions soon, but in the mean time, here's some reading material about Castles & Crusades, whose system is used for the Dragon Egg RPG, I believe.

It explains how feats work. (Challenge rolls based on your attribute modifier with odds 6 pts. in your favor for primary attributes.)

Note the clumsy barbarian on the cover! Could that be Goros Baldknuckle? I pictured him less blond and more shirty, but the falling off a cliff part seems about right.

Thanks, Legendary Sidekick. That's a good overview of the rules. The exception will be how magic works, which is a homebrew rules modification to reflect the rarity and danger associated with magic (except for elven life-magic). More info coming on that.

@Phietadix - see the sticky thread on Character Creation for info on how to generate ability scores.

Well, I have most of my character bio figured out... now I just need a reason for my forest-dwelling elf knight who's never been to sea in his life to suddenly be on a ship heading to the northern land.

Yeah, the inevitable twisting to fit backstory into the start of the adventure. Exactly why are all these diverse people poking around in this cave? :D

A knight, eh? I suspect s/he's bound by honor to go north. Knights and their Code of Conduct! Ha! No choice, unlike my barbarian who chose to leave his village because he has no friends there! Um... but, er, enough about him.

Whatever his/her reason for climbing aboard, I hope to see your knight on the getting-to-know-you thread. Goros is lonely in there!

Well, he's not quite a *good* knight, so his Code of Honor might be a bit different (makes me wonder what a Code would look like for someone on the Evil end of the spectrum!)...

I'll be sure to pop in, as soon as I can decide how to describe my stats without giving the numbers away. ^^

I know you already posted, but for those who did not, you don't HAVE to hint at stats. Just post back story, plus anything else you CHOOSE to include.

Hinted stats and alignment are optional. Well... so is posting to the Getting-to-Know-You thread, ha ha.

Also, everyone please provide an avatar that you wish to use for your character when we're using maps. It should be something that can be made rather small, so it is still recognizable on a larger map. For characters without an avatar, I'll simply use a letter on the map to indicate position.

I have a small question: can we join in the game once it's started or are you wanting everyone to join in right from the beginning? Just curious about that.

We can add people along the way. Nice to get most people in from the beginning, but there will be opportunities to work other characters in as we go.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's GOROS!

Well, I'll update the artwork. But I don't want to waste a good design, so yeah, it's THAT barbarian.

How old should a level 1 character be, by the way? I had a mid-20s design for the above barbarian (age ~16), and twennies barb uses a two-handed sword. If I'm about to shell out 50 bucks for something that only hurts slightly more than a 20 dollar axe, you better believe it'll be drawn awesome.

STEALTH EDIT - awesomely

VERY good question. I've established Cadell as well into his 2000's, and with a military history to boot (courtesy of the RP I adapted him from). He doesn't quite seem like a level 1, but I wouldn't want to give myself an unfair head start above the rest of you guys. :/
