Hey guys - sorry for the delay. Swamped at work, but going to try to catch up at lunch.

Every spell requires a spell check to cast. Life magic doesn't risk corruption, though the spell can still fail. So far, there haven't been any runaway magic effects from life magic, though whether that will hold true at higher levels remains to be seen.

That's what I thought. So is that the 1d20+whatever?

Then our healers have been doing it wrong all the way. xD

You're evil! To forgive your evil deed I shall randomly request Nissa's help in lying.

Yeah, actually let me back up a step, because what I said above isn't true, though that's how I used to run it.

For this game, if you're casting a healing/life spell from your own spell list, you don't need a check. If you're casting from another spell list, or if you're just an elf (non-caster) who is trying to cast a healing spell, then you need a check.

Sorry for the confusion. I ran it the other way for many years, but finally ditched it after one too many TPKs full of failed healing casts.

Oh, okay then. Nevermind. XD So now that Cadell's learned Cure Light Wounds, it's on his list and he won't need the d20 check, right?

No. By 'on your list' I mean part of the spell list for you caster class. A Knight has no spells as part of his class, so he will need a check for any spell he wants to try to cast. On the other hand, a Cleric has CLW on their class list and doesn't need a check.

I think Cadell DOES need a check. I think clerics don't roll for healing spells from the cleric list, and druids don't roll for healing spells from the druid list. So if Liadan makes goodberries, she has to roll a check… I think.

(STEALTH EDIT - Double ninja'd! I'm not stealthy at all!)

One more thing (actually the thing I was confused about all along)... the Purify Food and Drink Spell is on Liadan's list, so she doesn't need the d20 check, but there's no die roll specified for its effects. What do I roll then?

So is "Summon a Demon when you're cooking/dying". You don't need a check to NOT roll a check for runaway. In fact, you could fail any spell by not making the right gestures or something... If those fails for some wicked reason would also result in runaway Mauve is not a wizard.... she's a Warlock! MWHAHAHAHA!

Now I feel better about losing my "Dark Lord" title.

@Ireth
He said you need a check for everything except healing spells. So, a d20+bonuses it is.
Uh, forget it. When in doubt always ask, hah.

@LS
Give up the ninja life.

For that particular spell, you don't have to roll. The amount of food and/or water you purify is based on level. It's like 1 cubic foot of food or water per level, which is actually quite a bit, particularly when cast at level 4. The spell will purify or reverse spoilage from the food, but it won't prevent it from occurring again. So if you have rotten berries, the spell will fix them so that they're not rotten anymore, but they'll start rotting again if not used (though you could purify them again as well).

I meant any "life energy" spell, which some non-healing cleric spells are (but not all of them).

Everyone roll save v. confusion!
