Oh, and speaking of heavy weapons... I don't know why I didn't think of doing this sooner, but check out these weapons:
Ignore all that stuff about liger tails and lemming crystals and such. The weapons themselves are from a game called Monster Hunter. I actually was given permission by the artist AND Capcom (yeah, that huge game company that doesn't know who the hell I am) to use this art as long as there's no money in it. It's not just these 8 weapons. There are dozens, which are divided into 7 categories:
Longswords: those weapons named after Reaver, katanas, a naginata and more knightly longswords including a glowing blue one called Rising Soul (which may end up in Diana's hands if I can find a shield to pair with it).
Switch-Axes: I can't make them change to swords, like they could in-game, but Addison has the heavy weapon skill and uses an axe that can paralyze an enemy. I'll likely give these weapons in-game abilities, so some axes will have paralysis "phials" while others have elemental phials. There's also a "power" phial and a "dragon" phial.
Hammers: the Lava Core Hammer looks like it should have magic as the axe does, so my thought is to not limit the phial concept to the axe. The hammer will likely have different magic than the axe, which is more area-of-effect stuff like "thunder." Of course, the Lava Core Hammer causes an explosion.
Great Swords: two-handers like Fenellas are great swords. The Valkyrie Blade looks cool and has a great name for a weapon I envision in the hands of an amazon.
Sword and Shield: that's the category Sea Striker belongs to, but there are cudgels, hand-axes, tomahawks and knives as well. There might be a wakizashi under this category. I forget.
Lance: there are spears, halberds, a naginata (which I guess is longer than the longsword version) and a huge metal shark. I probably won't use the shark. Anyway, these come with shields, giving shield maidens several choices. (Anyone interested in learning to fight with a shield should talk to Diana.)
Bowguns: I don't have any pictured here, but there are guns you can assemble in MH. Just using part of the gun works great for Addy's grappler. Some bowguns have a part that looks like a bow. Since I have to erase all that dark gray area, it's no trouble to erase more to change some bowguns into normal bows.
Once I bring these into the game, I'll support the following weapon categories:
1. Light Weapon - these inflict normal melee damage.
2. Katana - only these can be used with the samurai "quickdraw" skill. Once drawn, a katana is no different than a light weapon.
3. Weapon + Shield - a shield is necessary for the shield maiden's defense bonus. Any one-handed weapon (including a katana) can be used with a shield.
(I'm under the opinion that you can't wear a shield and have the "quickdraw," but if a samurai and shield maiden exchange skills, I'm happy to work something out--maybe an "Afro Samurai" style that uses the scabbard for blocking?)
4. Dual-Wield - pretty much any long sword + short sword combination or any two short swords/cudgels/blades. Same damage either way--I just prefer to pair the katana with a wakizashi rather than having two katanas.
Dual wielding can also include combinations with throwing weapons or derringers ("One-shots"). So... any two weapons that can be operated with only one hand.
5. Heavy Weapon ("big") - great swords, halberds and naginatas have the multi-hit capability as used by Reaver and Fenella. The range is better than what I posted in the weapon update. I think strong will have a 120-degree arc or 180-degree arc, while the max attack hits all surrounding enemies.
6. Heavy Weapon ("fat") - axes, hammers and Giant-Flowers-That-You-Can-Hit-People-With lack the reach of the "big" weapons. What they lack in multi-hit ability will be compensated in another way.
(This is the only weapon type not already in a player's hands.)
7. Throwing Weapon - short spears, knives and tomahawks can be used for fighting or can be thrown. They inflict the same damage as range weapons, making them more versatile but less damaging than normal melee weapons.
8. Ranged Weapon - bows and guns inflict normal ranged damage, but can inflict more damage using special ammo. The default arrow is "robin" and the default bullet is a "cheap shot." Both are fired twice when a 20 is rolled.
The derringer ("One-Shot") doesn't benefit from a 20 unless the gunslinger is carrying two of them. (It's a gun made for dual wielding.)
Of course, there are the unarmed styles...
9. Unarmed Combat - nuns and brawlers are the experts, with nuns inflicting the most punch/kick damage and brawlers being the wrestling pros.
10. Magic - pixies kick ass! I like that magic is powerful, so I'll leave it that way. I think now that heavy, dual, and unarmed styles can hit multiple enemies, the fighting styles are more balanced.
