Just color the dead...I mean fallen ones blue gray.
I don't think of them as dead. I want this to play more like an action RPG video game, so when you fall, as long as someone survives the battle, you can expect to save your allies.

That, and the fallen position might be used for other things, such as being tripped, picked up and thrown, etc.

Technical Difficulties

My printer just broke, and the printer is also a scanner. So now I can't get the error message to go away, meaning I can't use the scanner function even though only the printer is broken and the scanner should still work.

Well, I still have Diana and Cookie scanned so I can color them, and I still need to draw more art, so this shouldn't slow me down so much as it changes the order of operations. (I have a tablet, too, though I prefer using a pen for the outline.)

Anyway, please be patient. The plan was to start the game in January, but if can get the art ready sooner, we'll begin as soon as I have the art done.

Update: I might try using the tablet do draw everything. If the art comes out right, I can run the game without the scanner. If I don't get to it this weekend, I'll have a free day during the week. Two, depending on the weather.

Just a heads up -- I'm going to be out of the country for a week, from Dec. 9-16. I'll have my laptop with me, but I don't know hoe much RP time I'll have. Definitely not the 9th or 16th, since I'll be flying all day.

No problem. I'll try to start the game when there's artwork, but if any action begins and you're not around, I'll have Vincent do something that prevents Diana from looking like a slacker. Or, if you prefer, I'll keep her in the figth by rolling her actions during the GM turn if I don't see a post from you.

I'm going to start setting up the game to basically force myself to get the artwork going despite the lack of a scanner. I think I draw better on paper, but the character art is simple enough that I might do okay using a tablet.

I'm not entirely sure what's going on with Diana and Vincent's section of the GM post... is Vincent letting Diana know what the girl is feeling? And is the girl lusting toward him? o_O;

@Ireth, Vincent's magic tricks aren't very helpful, are they?

Oh, okay... I'll clarify. First question: yes. Second question: you suspect she is not. The girl looks troubled. Hope was when her eyes locked on Diana. (Um... and they remained on you when Lust came up. I don't know which disturbs Diana more, but she didn't give a lustful expression.)

@Sparkie, no apology necessary. I wasn't planning to start the game until Janurary, but I posted the thread to see where characters would go. If you stayed on the island, I'd draw island art and put us on the boat later. Instead everyone high-tailed it to the boat.

My point: I was just letting you guys do your thing, and now that you did, I'm going to get this thing moving sooner than planned. It'll be A LOT of art, but I find I draw better once I have actual characters. Without personality, I can't get into drawing people. I seriously tried drawing templates so I could just put clothing on a bald anatomically-incorrect nudist and you'd have a character. It bored me, where drawing Diana and Cookie was fun! (Shan Mai, too... I just didn't think his pics were ready for scanning. And then my scanner died.)

I'm taking my kids to battle ballet, which is a great time for me to draw. I'll test the new scanner no matter how much art is ready. If it works, I'll spend the week coloring stuff.

I hope to get going on the action next week. So… now's a good time for

A TIP!

When you roll, you roll 1d20 ONCE. It is NOT cheating to roll first, then decide what you'll do with your successful/failed roll. Feel free to adjust your target or action based on the roll before you post.

@Ireth, magic only fails with consequence if you're charging the magic. If you decide to charge your spell, you need to specify what spell you're charging on the first turn. You can CHOOSE to charge the spell if you roll a 9 or less on the first attempt, or let the magic fizzle out without any consequence. If you say you let the magic fade/fizzle/etc., you can still cast again on the next turn. It just won't be a charged spell. Oh… and there is no MP. The power balance is that magic only works 55% of the time, and you cannot move and cast in the same turn.

(Not that we have ranged characters, but I'm going to change my mind and let ranged characters move and shoot. However, ranged characters are more likely to hit if they remain still when shooting.)

The scanner works! Shan Mai is holding a meat cleaver. Vincent has fancy hair.

Cute! Is that Beatrice and the fat man I see too? ^^

Also, LS, I need responses to the PMs I sent you before I can post properly with Vincent. ^^;

UPDATE:

All player characters are drawn! Game begins soon… let's see if I can have maps up during the week.

@Severin R, I have different weapon combinations for you:

1- all sheathed
2- katana only
3- 2 cleavers
4- katana and cleaver (katana in dominant hand)

Oh… I need a 5th -1 cleaver! An easy fix.

About to push the game forward…

CASINO DECK: Reaver, Cookie, Pale Jackal
UPPER DECK: Vincent, Diana, Shan Mai

Maps are almost ready. I drew 2 more pages of art, which I'm scanning now to put the final touches on the map.

I'll update as soon as at least one map is ready. My next update WILL have art!

If I get to post tonight, it'll be my last one before I go on my trip. I'll probably be heading offline right after. Gotta get up early tomorrow to catch my flight, and for that I need to go to bed early. Stupid need for sleep.

Have fun!

The upper deck map is nearly done, but you may have to check it later if you can. Anyway, enjoy the trip. I enjoyed being offline when I was in Hong Kong, so don't sweat it if you can't play for a week. Meet your friends, have fun, play when you get back. (Not that I mind if you jump in when you can.)

Here's what Cookie made: cab leg and eel casserole!

I thought I'd do like Smash Bros. and use a real image* for food—at least when chef players specify what they're cooking.

*See Cap'n's table.

As for my latest GM post, just react to what your characters know. Don't move—especially if you're the player who's only one square away fro

Oops. Gotta run!

About the death - that honestly was completely random. I swear I wasn't doing the action-movie thing where you take a useless innocent and make him unlikable so no one cares when he gets killed off.

If you really want the proof that I'm a heartless bastard who almost killed off a kid...

If you're curious, here's how the roll worked.
embed

The d17 and d5 are the X and Y axis. They don't target tiles, but CORNERS of tiles. The d3 determines the deck. 1 = upper, 2 = casino, and 3 = both.

So the d3 was a 1. That's the upper deck.

The d17 and d5 rolls are 5,-4. (I'm using negative for Y for any math purists out there.) If the top-left corner of the top-left tile is 1,-1, then 5,-1 would be the edge of the stage. 5,-4 is where the small pool of blood is starting to seep into Beatrice's dress.

Okay, so you believe me that I randomly targeted Fatty's table. But why not kill the girl?

The d20 determined hit-or-miss, damage, and a third thing for the cannon: which tiles are hit.

1-7 = miss the boat
8-9 = hit 1 person or object: 8 = linear path left of target, 9 = linear path right of target
10-15 = hit 2 tiles: 10 = pair of tiles above target, 11 = pair below, 12 = pair to the left, 13 = pair to the right, 14 = diagonal pair: top-left and lower-right, 15 = diagonal pair: top-right and lower-left
16-19 = hit 6 tiles; four tiles surrounding target plus: 16 = pair above, 17 = pair below, 18 = pair to the left; 19 = pair to the right
20 = hit 12 tiles: every tile hit in the 10+ rolls

...okay, maybe that doesn't prove I'd have let the kid die. But the death was random. You can't deny that!

What you can do is figure out how to keep more innocents from getting killed. Good luck!
