An 8 actually is successful against the frog without a shield. It's the minimum successful roll for Diana.

Defense for two-hand spear guys = 7 (4 for PCs with good offense, which is why Cookie's 5 hit)
Defense for shield guys = 10 (7 for PCs with good offense; for dual cleavers, Shan Mai needs to beat 10 for the first hit and 13 for the second)
Health for bold-colored guys = 1.5x more than the pastel guys, and they inflict 2HP (half-a-heart) more damage.

…so Diana would have hit him. It's just that he'd have lived to hit back.

I try to keep numbers hidden not because it's a secret, but in play-testing, I felt the math just cluttered the game. I think Reaver and Phil would agree. From my end, it's more fun to just tell you what happened. Aside from me goofing up Ireth's rolls, I have a good handle on the numbers. Honest!

A 15? And Diana actually has the frog's shield occupied, so yeah, I'd say that's a hit.

Also, just a minor correction… the sword isn't in Shan Mai's belt. It was stuck in the ground. It's hard to see in the recent post, but you can see from the post before.

The funny part is that I had several versions of Shan Mai, but I failed to consider he'd have both cleavers while his katana is on the ground. I had to combine two Shan Mai images so he'd have the cleavers but no sword in his belt.

In other words, I almost had a sword in his belt when I shouldn't.

I do agree. You have a firm grasp on handling numbers.

I display the rolls just so you know I actually roll.

Those who played the test game know players actually get hit, too. So far, no players are hurt—a mix of good rolls and great teamwork. Sparkie surprised me with that barrel idea. A PM was sent asking 'can I do that?', so by the time he posted I had my post ready. I had alternate text and an alternate image ready in case he rolled too low to topple the frog.

Just a clarification: Please roll the die only once per turn.
If there are too many actions or rolls, I'll just count the first of them.

When we were testing, we did have moments where a player would roll more than once either due to having a move that hits twice or a jump followed by an attack--and I did come up with some dumb ideas that involved something other than a single d20 roll for certain moves/situation.

In the end, I believe Phil, Reaver and I were in agreement when the #1 rule became to roll a single d20 one time regardless of the action.

I'll update later. I actually have maps ready for this turn, and none of what happened changes this... well, except PJ wrestling the barrel. Maybe I should have told him he can easily get up and fight. It was funny, so no harm done, but a 7 would hit the no-shield guy due to PJ's offense.

(@Phil, feel free to edit or not edit.)

(@Severin, it's an honest mistake, so you can keep the 12 for your next action if you want to.)

I never put a sleeper hold on a barrel before, but I did suplex a bale of hay back in my teens. I had these red marks on my arms, but when I tossed it out of the ring (hay wagon), it was pretty clear that I was, indeed, the victor.

Hard to have a pic for every instance.
Wish he could hold on to his weapons, but I guess thats why I gave him three. Oh, wait, the one was dropped instead of the cleaver.

Multiple rolls:
Sorry, thought the one roll was per attack, not for all attacks.
Not sure about the one roll thing but I'll roll with it. rimshot

I did roll for that cannon shot, but without logging on so no one would see the roll and know where the cannon is going (in case anyone was paying attention to that weird die roll for the cannon ball). So it really is random… but just to be on the safe side, never stand one square to Beatrice's right when you hear the boom. And don't be a bald, mustached man either.

Level 1-2 Starts Soon…

Maps are ready, but I'd like to give players some time to interact with each other. To keep things moving, let's assume Vincent picked up the conversation between Reaver and Ender* so someone on the upper deck knows where to go next.

*(He should be focused on the hole since that's where he almost stepped. Being a mentalist, he picks up a lot of info just by being focused on a certain object or NPC.)

I basically am running this like a video game where you all have to be "onscreen" to experience the action. So once we're ready to take on the enemy ship, you'll be on one map or the other.

Vincent isn't that close to the hole, or so I thought. I'm about to post, and I plan to have him talk to Shan Mei and/or Beatrice, and the hole in the stage.

He's not close and wasn't even facing that direction, but a cannon ball dropping exactly where he would have been standing should catch his attention.

(Good thing you didn't send Diana that way. She'd be hanging out with Ender two decks below!)

Well, I just posted, so... *shrug* I don't want to cram too much into what seems to be the standard six-second turn. Unless we're not in battle-mode anymore, what with the frogs being dead... but I doubt that, given that the ship is still coming at them.

There's no 5-second rule or 6-second rule at the moment. Feel free to RP. I'll move the party to the next map soon.

Vincent and Reaver both know that the artillery room is below the casino deck's bar (two decks below the upper deck).

*reading the Hero Sandwich Shop Thread* Gluhwein for $12.25... I see what you did there. XDDD

I have a good menu to start with now.

Appetizers, sea food, booze, meat, and the cheap stuff. Feel free to pass the Hero Sandwich Shop on your way down to the main deck. Using video game logic, it makes sense to grab a bite to eat before going to a battle.

Oh… and anyone in the bar room can eat what's on the Cap'n's table to save $19 and still reap the benefits.

EDIT - For those who want better-than-video-game-logic, I'll have an NPC get things moving later tonight. In case a player wants to jump ahead of me, the idea is that you'll pass through the mess hall on the way to the next map. The mess hall will be, well… a mess. People fled leaving nearly-untouched meals/desserts/drinks on the tables. It will go to waste, so you're free to eat what you find without having to pay and it doesn't count as stealing.

You can assume you find any item that costs less $50. (No free puffer fish or B&B oyster.) You only benefit from one item, even if you can realistically eat 5 of those thing in one sitting.
