((I don't think we have a choice but to engage the enemy out here in the snow, based on Steerpike's last post, but it was worth a shot trying to bring the battle back to the temple.))

"It appears the battle will be decided in the fields outside of bowshot, we but provide a retreat point if they can break off the attack. Running full speed, would only get us in an open field to cheer our heros, or be able to fall quickly after dem if they parish." I announce to anyone not already watching.
"If they need us, let us be ready."

"Should we try a trip rope across the entrance to he courtyard? Is there anything to atach one end? Archers nail those that trip, while those that avoid it dash away, thus dividing the enemy?"

Who is left with us that can trade blows, blade to blade? And strong enough to hold the rope against them?

"No rope! These wolves may jump higher than injured dwarves." I move towards the staircase, adjusting the girl's dead weight over my shoulder. "We could, however, block all entrances but one. If only we had time..."

((If possible, I'm going to the second floor. The faster I can get Burnbright into one room come back, the better.))

"Wait! It is enough for now that Burnbright is inside. We should be prepared to aid our companions when they return. Which, if they are wise, they will do, knowing that we are here to support them.

"You are a… wizard? You were the one making the light earlier?

"I have a plan.…"

GM-ish comment, just in case Steerpike didn't correct it by PM: earlier, Mauve attempted (and failed) to cast Shocking Grasp. This is a touch-attack spell; whether or not the player was aware of that, the character certainly would be. Unless Mauve was planning on zapping one of us, she would not have cast it; ergo, she should have those mana points still (and whatever negative consequences erased).

"I meant to keep the rope down until all friendlys in, and pull it up when enemy comes, but that would mean the holder would face the enemy hand to hand, maybe struggling to get to thier feet, or if they jumped it ready to fight. But the enemy might be to close to be effecive."

((Clarification to everyone: Yes, it's a touch spell. The duration is unlimited, being discharged only when I successfully hit something - it won't discharge even if I get hit instead. It's not a bad thing to cast before a combat.))

I look at the strange woman, registering how she's as short as me. It's funny who my mind is always focusing in such insignificant details, even during a dangerous situation.

"Yes, I did. I could try to help you..." I hesitate. "Today is not a good day, I am failing to control the magic and reaching my limit. If you want to take such risk, tell me your plan."

((Edit: If Hiljikki closes in and tells her plan along the way...))

"All right, place the girl on the storeroom's stairs and close the door. If you are sure of this, allow me some seconds to get ready." I stop near the statue and take a deep breath.

((Got it. Of course, that means you need to remember you've got it going when you do… not sure if you can discharge it by deliberately touching someone without intending an attack. I would guess it does, or every mage everywhere would have one ready at all times… versions of D&D before 3e gave a duration, after which it would fizzle out harmlessly, so be sure to check with Steerpike if you haven't already to see how C&C does it. Would be inconvenient to assume.))

((Hiljikki does this thing.))

"It seems worth the effort, and I can think of little else we might do. Certainly nothing likely to have as much of an effect. Were you injured in your previous attempts? Eat this; it should make you feel better."

((Hands Mauve a Goodberry. Mauve gets 1 HP back, feels like she's just eaten a full meal, and regains a bit of confidence, either from knowing someone cares or from Hiljikki's tranquil, unflustered demeanor [i.e. her high CHA score].))

"Taevataat," Hiljikki calls. The raven flutters down to her shoulder. She steps to the side of the doorway, so that she can see out, but the raven is concealed form outside view.

"After the spell is cast, take Taevataat on your arm and crouch behind me so the enemy cannot see either of you. I will stand in the doorway and make myself… conspicuous. When I am ready for him, I will tell him to fly… after which we can both do whatever seems appropriate."

Hiljikki calls to whoever is still in the vicinity:

"Archers! Take positions to cover the entrance to the courtyard! When our friends return, it will likely be in the face of pursuit!"

Then she adds: "Or, if they do not return, we shall need every advantage we can muster."

The presence of another woman startles me. The fact that she is carrying Burnbright away angers me. I train my arrow on her. In the quiet moment before the arrow leaves the string, I become aware that everyone else seems familiar with her. Trusting my instinct, the fact that the druid is still inside, I lower my bow and head into the open field.

I stop at the furthest distance possible and shoot.

((Truly? I'm really getting frustrated with these rolls. I just tried Unseen Servant and got an 18. I'll be using that site from now on. Keep the Rolz.com roll for this turn.))

((I'm honestly suprised you even went with Rolz. That site plainly doesn't like you, and anyway The Unseen Servant has more features.))

((New maps in progress. Nobody move :D Also, when planning strategy in combat, make sure you're doing it in-character. Characters are spread all over the map, galloping on horses, running across a frozen field, etc. There's not much time for strategy apart from what you can yell at one another. Those still in the temple don't have that problem yet :) )).

The lone dwarf continues to sprint toward the temple walls, paying no heed as Matthew and Cadell charge past on horseback. All but two of the large wolves converge on the dwarves that have turned to fight. The other two split from the pack and move around the dwarves' defensive position, apparently in pursuit of the dwarf who is still running. As the beasts grow closer, you can make out a bit more of the wiry creatures upon their backs. They look like goblins, though their skins are a pale, icy blue you've never seen before.

Two of the wolf-riders reach the dwarves. The first wolf rears onto its haunches, snapping teeth and swiping a paw at the dwarf to the left of the approaching party members. The dwarf turns both attacks against his shield, then swings a crushing blow with his hammer that pitches the goblin from the back of the wolf and into the snow. The second wolf-rider directs his mount in a quick turn just as he reaches the dwarf, jabbing with his spear as he closes the distance. The dwarf barely manages to knock the spear tip aside with his shield, and the action throws him slightly off balance. His return hammer-attack finds nothing but air.

Cadell arrives just behind the two fighting dwarves immediately after the initial attack. He sees the goblin that has been knocked from his mount laying sprawled in the snow, dark blood spattered across the white ground. Two other wolf-riders are closing fast, spears held aloft. Cadell yells to the dwarf nearest him to scramble onto his horse, but the dwarf is already preparing to defend against the next attack and mount an offense of his own, and he pays no heed to Cadell's words. In all the violent action, Cadell can't even be sure the dwarf heard him.

Matthew closes with one of the wolf-riders who has veered around the defensive group. The goblin's eyes were intent on the fleeing dwarf, and he seems to notice Matthew only at the last minute. The goblin raises his spear in a hasty parry, but Matthew's attack splinters the weapon and bites into the goblin, pitching him from his mount. The large wolf the goblin was riding snaps at Matthew's mount, its hot breath misting in the cool air:

Wolf Attack [1d20+2] = 9+2 = 11

The attack misses Matthew's mount, but the wolf begins to move in a dangerous arc, preparing to come again.

Baldhart still sprints toward the fray, but her path takes her directly into the path of the running dwarf. He notices her about thirty feet away and pulls his hammer free, raising his shield as she closes the distance.

Rydh is just behind Baldhart, also moving toward the battle, though the dwarf before him now occupies his attention as well.

Ankari rushes onto the scene from the temple courtyard, judging the maximum range at which he can shoot with confidence. His target is the other wolf-rider who has veered around the defending dwarves. The arrow streaks across the gray sky but is well short of its target.

Hearing the heavy breaths of a wolf approaching from behind, I turn and ready an arrow.

((Wow, Cadell's losing his edge. Maybe I'll try the other roller next time. Do I still need to roll for damage with such a fail?))

I curse as my arrow misses the wolf by a wide margin. It must be the Taint on this place that is affecting my marksmanship -- I have not had such ill luck in quite some time.

((That first shot was just for range, right Ankari? ;) ))

Seeing the dwarf ready his weapon as Baldhart approches, I figure it's best to avoid him. I adjust my running course to directly north. There's a wolf over there who has somehow slipped past Cadell. I hope my blade finds its heart before it chews on my head.

Mauve sets Burnbright atop the staircase leading into the temple basement, then closes the door and joins Hiljikki near the temple entrance. Sounds of battle, growls and the shouts of voices, can be heard from the snowy field nearby, but the courtyard walls prevent either from seeing what is going on in the battle.

Aliron remains perched in the second story window of the temple. From his vantage point, he can see all that unfolds on the battlefield. There is a change one of the wolves will come into his range soon, though the distance would be greater than he wishes.

((Characters in the temple can continue to do whatever they like for the time being. So far, there is no direct threat to them)).
