((Squares are 5 feet. Your run away magic "usually" extends five feet in every direction. There's no guarantee of that though; it's unpredictable)).

Move to the wall? Leave a good defensable position, the best final defense place I know.
"Better to remain here, rain arrows down on the enemy, give conflicted cheers when wolf, goblin, or dwarf get hit."
I chuckle, then offer
"You know the wolves might run slower after eating their fill of nasty dwarf meat!"

((Map of the snowy field away from the Temple. This is a big map so the site may shrink it a lot. Image can be found here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2578171/snowfieldpopulated.jpg

If you can access that link it should show up full size. More commentary below)).

I mount Llucheden and ride out abreast of Matthew toward the dwarves and their attackers, my bow at the ready. I have no great love of dwarves, any more than others of my race, but if the truce I was able to initiate between the elves and mortals in my home forest has taught me anything, it is not to undervalue an ally in times of need -- even if that ally is one I would not normally choose to fight alongside. Orcs and goblins, however, are still the exception.

((The dwarves and the enemy are too far away for those in the temple to engage right now. This does give them time to prepare, however. In fact, this next round will be people positioning themselves, as no one is close enough to engage yet. I'll post a new temple map after people complete their movement this round)).

Baldhart dashes out the courtyard exit, boots crunching fast and hard across the snow. In the distance, the dwarves continue to run, but the wolves are gaining quickly. As Baldhart nears, she sees that the wolves are larger than is usual for such creatures, and each bears a rider wielding a spear.

The dwarves come to a sudden halt, and there is conversation between them. Then the dwarf who was running alone turns and continues toward the temple. The other two drop their burden onto the snow between them and turn to face the enemy, slipping large hammers from the belts at their side.

As Baldhart continues her sprint, Matthew and Cadell streak past on horseback. If the dwarf running toward the temple has seen either Baldhart or the mounted warriors yet, he gives no indication.

I continue running towards the fray, and I see a couple of the dwarves stop, turn, and face the beasts. An honorable act. Dwarves and Elves have not always seen eye-to-eye, but moments like these are why there has always been a sort of respect between the races.

I'm running as fast as I can, but I'm not exactly fleet of foot. Knowing my luck I'll get there just in time for the scrum to be over. Either that, or someone will need healing. I wonder if I'll even get to swing my sword.

When I get close, I'll head straight to where the action is. Knowing Baldhart, she'll be at the center of it. Matthew may be too, but It may be wise for Cadell to keep a little distant. His arrows may be of more use than anything.

The warriors with mounts charge but do not use spears. Those without mounts abandon good defensive positions in favor of open ground. One brings an unconscious girl and deposits her along the way… out in the cold. The dwarves appear to be of the same mind, dropping their companion in the snow—while the unburdened one alone continues to flee our way.

What is wrong with this picture?

Is this another of your jests I am failing to understand, Hrafnfreistuðr?

"You… miss," Hiljikki calls to Mauve, as she makes to cover Burnbright. "We have not met yet. No matter for now. Bring the girl back inside. There's no reason for her to lie out in the cold or be trampled. Nor for one unarmored as yourself to be fighting away from cover. We cannot affect the battle beyond—and if it reaches the courtyard, it will reach us seconds thereafter."

Now might be an excellent time to prepare my Insect Plague spell. Such a pity Juoksa never taught me that one. It worked so well for him.

Though admittedly, that was in summer, in the marshes.

Hiljikki begins a low, sonorous chant in an unfamiliar language.

Who knows? This might work.…

Why on earth would they throw the girl out there and run away?!

I tie my spear to my backpack using a bandage so my both hands are free to lift Burnbright.

((I like this roller better! ò.o'))

As I bow down to pick up the girl, Hiljikki calls me. I only manage to answer a breathless "Yes!" and I run to the temple as fast I can, bringing the girl wrapped in cloak in my arms, relieved that someone thinks the same.

"Upstairs?!" I blurt as I near the portal, I noticing then the unfamiliar chanting. Cursing under my breath I take the best path to avoiding her. I know... only one reason... I would chant in this situation...!

I decide I'm just taking the staircase from before.

They mean to sacrifice themselves. The fallen one… is he dead?

"Knights! Offer a ride if there's time!"

Maybe we can bring the fight to the temple… I keep moving forward in case we can't.

((My move forward halts/turns (a) if the knights can and do give the standing dwarves a ride back to the temple or (b) if the lead dwarf convinces the knights to allow the other dwarves to sacrifice themselves. Baldhart won't abandon her party members out here even though she's on foot.))

"I doubt That they'll want one!" I yell back.
The dwarves are making a stand against the riders, honorable, but they are far out-numberered they'll need our help. And I intend to give it to them. I do a mounted charge at the nearest rider.

I hit the rider.

"Best defensive postion is 2nd floor, we can pick off attackers that approach, and offer final stand at the stairs."
Open courtyard is indefensible, they can simply run us down."
We can do nothing better down in the court yard, that we can't do from the window." I call out to any that can hear me.

Sir Matthew is right—especially if the fallen dwarf can be saved—then I wouldn't leave him either…

I raise my sword as I charge on "FORWARD!"

It doesn't matter where the fight happens. If our forces are divided, we die.

Hearing Baldhart's insistence that Matthew and I offer the dwarves a ride on our horses, I hurry Llucheden over to the nearest dwarf and hold my hand down. "Here, get on!"

+1 prime, +1 mod and -2 penalty for dealing with dwarves cancels each other out, so I'm left with a straight d20.))

((I'll resolve all of these actions when I get home this evening. Just a quick note from the map - the enemy riders are a bit closer to the two dwarves who have turned to fight than are Matthew and Cadell. Riding toward them, you can expect the battle to be engaged when you get there. Just something to keep in mind as you're trying to talk to the dwarves or get them up onto horses!)).
