Dragon's Egg - Act II

Sparkie

Dark Lord
Invariably, someone who should not be harmed will be. It is the way of war. Causing such harm intentionally, however, is not the way of a True Soldier. And causing injury to a child is condemned by our Lord.

Soldiery - Codex 3:47

*****

No. No no no no!

I kneel down next to Burnbright and roll her onto her back, checking for vital signs. I'm not sure how she's hurt, or even if she's hurt.

"I just... I thought..."

I take a breath, trying to calm myself. What could have done it? It was just a chain and pen- That's it! The scythe is a symbol of Gefjon. It is a holy thing, and it affected Burnbright magically. Is she anointed by the Gods? As long as she's not hurt...

Ankari gives the call of danger. Burnbright knew. She knew before us all.

Rydh checks Burnbright over. She is breathing, and has a pulse, though her heart is beating rapidly. She is unconscious, but otherwise shows no visible effects of injury.

Well, she doesn't seem truly hurt. That's good. Still, this bodes ill.

"She's alright for now, just out cold. Ankari just called out for danger so we'd all better head upstairs."

"Thank you, Rydh."

I carry Burnbright…

…upstairs.

"Let's stay together, everyone! Ankari and the druid can't hold the upper level alone!"

I see Ankari in a high position in the upper level.

"Ankari! Burnbright said, 'they're coming' before she collapsed."

I put Burnbright down near Ankari.

"You have the advantage of higher ground, should anyone come after her. Not that I plan to let any monsters, be they man or beast, ascend these stairs."

I go back to the entry level and stand guard in front of the stairs that lead to Ankari and Burnbright.

((No map, so I'm assuming that Ankari needed to go up some stairs to look out the window. I'm also assuming there is only one way up, and Baldhart is blocking it. If there's another way up, well… we have a small army here. I'll block the most ovbious path from entry way to stairway to Burnbright & Ankari.))

((Map coming tonight. There are two staircases in the temple room, one on either side. It is unclear whether they lead to the same upstairs areas)).

I follow Baldhart upstairs, drawing my sword as I go. After she leaves Burnbright with Ankari and stands by the door, I ask her quietly "I know a spell that my help protect you. If you're willing to risk a little pain now, you can avoid a lot of pain later."

"Tsc."

I get up. If they're not coming from the opening, it could be an escape route. I shake my head, casting a last glance at the storeroom. Uhm, I'm not really good to find such things.

I fall behind all of them as they take the stairs, bringing the torch.

"This blue glow is… very pretty! I don't know what you did, Rydh, but I promise your spell will not be wasted on me."

The unknown enemy approaches. Its target: Burnbright. Its chances of reaching its target: none.

I rush to Ankari's position, then
I try to find a place to fire arrows without being to exposed, and not near a magic caster.
"Do we know the approaching is an enemy? launch arrows on sight? Much better to fill an enemy full of arrows then to let them get close and trade blows. I try to error on the side of safe."

[Also when arrows fly I will need to know if night has fallen for arrow bonus.]

"I might be able to read the books, but I hear its dwarten, and I might not be able to understand the simplistic nature of their pathetic language. Truly, reading script is my weakest ability."

"If they are human, elven, dwarven… capable of speech, let's use words before weapons. Hiljikki and Mauve are kindred spirits, which we know because we were not too quick to attack. We must give people the benefit of the doubt.

"That said, Burnbright's words were 'they're coming.' As you say, Aliron, we do not wish to let an enemy get close. I wish not to use my blade on a person, but if they're hunting for Burnbright, it will be the last thing they ever do.

"When they approach, I will talk if they are people. Have an arrow ready in case they are monsters, or people who deserve to be shot."

[COMBAT SENSE] I peer out the door, to look for signs of aggression among those who approach. Are they men or beasts?

"Before we attack anyone, do we even know they are enemies. In fact do we know anything about them at all?"
I say this, primarily to those with ranged weapons, who could easily attack the 'enemy' long before we knew a thing about them.
"First, we need to determine what their intentions are."

Edit: I was ninja'd by Legendary who said the same message.

((Map tonight. That will help. I had Ankari and Hiljikki on the second floor. Then Aliron went up. Baldhart and Rydh went upstairs, but Baldhart came downstairs and is looking out the door. Burnbright is up on the second floor next to where Ankari is. Everyone else is in the statue room on the main floor)).

[Very hard to keep track, I thought most of the group heard the shout, if I could not hear it or the group repeating, I can delete my post.
With the strange words spoken with the aid of the necklace, I think any shout even if not understandable, I think I would go check. If not understandable I would respond more carefully. In case Ankari is already being attacked.]

((You're up there. You heard the shout and are on the second level with Ankari))

My post changed, weird!

"If they are human, elven, dwarven… capable of speech,"
"Thats about the limit for dwarts, speak slowly, maybe they can understand." I chuckle watching for the enemy.
"May god guide my arrows to the heart of our enemy, and avoid all others."
