Dragon's Egg - Act II

Sparkie

Dark Lord
What is this thing made of? How did...

I see the creatue lunge and I hear the crunch. I look. It's Baldhart, and now she's going for the creature's mouth!

As she makes her jab I move over to her and utter my spell...

3 HP? Ugh...

The action interferes with the spell, and Baldhart's wounds are still awful. The monster moves in for another strike. What can we do to stop it?

((From the author of the original "When All Else Fails, Try Something Stupid" rule.… ;) ))

Bounce?

Not good.

Ooh—exposed neck! This has worked before.…

Clank.

That's the sound of Algernon's hammer falling to the ground.

"Duck!"

That's the sound of Algernon hollering as he smacks his shield into the side of the beastie's head.

((Note: his actual action for the round is the next one—this is intended mostly as a distraction, not a shield bash.))

((And a good thing it wasn't intended as an attack, too. Clearly, I need to work on what I call my rolls.…))

Whiff.

That's the sound of Algernon's shield distracting nothing in particular.

"Love!"

That's the sound of Algernon hollering as he tries to put a choke hold on the beastie while its head is facing Baldhart.

((Or, if this is a STR roll and not an attack roll, add +4, total 10—he's most definitely acting on "instinct" here.))

"Ugh."

That's the sound of Algernon failing to exert any meaningful control on his target, whether or not he managed to grab it at all.

((This was not as astonishingly stupid as it might first sound. Choking may or may not be an option, but the thing's gonna have a hard time biting people with an extra 240-ish pounds of barbarian wrapped around its neck. Whether or not that was Algernon's intention is an open question. And, at least for the moment, probably a rhetorical one. Sure, I know he'd've been better off sticking with the hammer—well, probably: could depend on exactly why the hammers didn't cause damage—but he doesn't know that.))

((Unmodified d20 rolls to date: two 1s, a 2, a 3, a 7 and a 12. Average: 4.167. For comparison: grabbed my own d20, made six rolls: two 9s, a 10, a 15, a 17 and a 2. Average: 10.33. In other words, the average on my own die was dead average. A sample size of six isn't enough to draw conclusions from, but, man.…))

((11 for Algernon - level + STR + 4 ... always add the 4 for something like this!))

Rydh heals my rib, and my fellow barbarian tries to distract the monster!

As I press on my sword with all my might, I look the monster in the eye.

"I am a valkyrie! I do not fear death!"

INTIMIDATE

((Worth a try...))

((11 for Algernon - level + STR + 4 ... always add the 4 for something like this!))

((Depends on if it's an ability check or an attack. Same with adding level: you don't add that to attacks, and BtH for level 1 barbarian is +0. You're right that I forgot to add that to the qualifying statement—so it's a moderately pathetic 11 if it's a STR check… or it's a really pathetic attack.))

Cadell set his bow aside, drawing his strength into himself. Grasping his sword with his good hand, he rushes the creature, thrusting the blade forward. The points scores a hit on the beast, just along the neck, and after initial resistance the tip of the blade slides in. The creature hisses, swinging its head from side to side, taking in its numerous foes.

Fish-demon-Mauve leaps from the water onto the thing's back, driving her dagger-clawed hand into the creature's back. The monster releases a hiss of pain and drops back down onto all of its legs. As it lands, Baldhart's sword drives toward it, but the blow is a glancing one, and the blade is deflected by the creature's hide as it begins to turn.

Aliron moves deftly between the boat and the creature, driving his dagger into the creature's back, searching for vulnerable spots. The dagger punctures deep, a spray of blood splashing up Aliron's arm. When he withdraws it, the blood spurts, one gout after another.

Algernon is in front of the beast still, and he takes a swipe with his shield. The creature is in mid-turn at this point, and the shield misses the thing entirely. Algernon latches onto the beast, trying to subdue it through brute force, but the creature shakes him free easily.

Darin begins singly loudly, in the sinuous dwarven tongue. You do not understand the words, but they are evocative of thunder and battle. He raises his hammer up high in time with the words he sings and brings it crashing down:

Darin's Attack [1d20+2] = 20+2 = 22

The hammer slams mightily into the creature, catching it just behind the head.

Darin's Damage [1d8+2] = 1+2 = 3

Snake-quick, the creature completes it turn, tossing Mauve into the water next to it. As it moves, it swings its broad tail at Aliron, attempting to bash the thief to the ground or throw him clear of the battle:

Monstrous Water Beast Attack [1d20+6] = 3+6 = 9

Aliron is too nimble, ducking the heavy tail as it passes overhead, feeling the rush of air from the beast's bulk as it passes over him.

Rydh makes it to Baldhart's side, ignoring the tumultuous battle around him, and lays his hands on the Barbarian. Though the magic isn't as strong as he'd hope, a surge of healing energy flows from him to Baldhart.

Now turned toward the water, the beast lunges at Mauve, it's gaping mouth open wide:

Monstrous Water Beast Attack [1d20+6] = 6+6 = 12

The beast's attack catches Mauve, but barely. Mauve, too, has a thicker skin in her new form and though the teeth close over her arm, she is able to yank her limb free, the teeth dragging along her thickened skin without doing any damage.

The beast is bleeding from numerous attacks, and there is a sense of frantic desperation to its attacks as it raises its massive tail and gets its feet back under it for another lunge at Mauve.

As the monster turns to the water, I leap forward again, scrambling up onto its back. If I can score a direct hit to the back of its neck, maybe I can kill it.

"Die!" I scream as I raise my sword and drive it down point-first.

((Heh...sorry I forgot Nodrick last round. Not used to seeing his actions in the same post as Baldy's. Nodrick missed last time though)).

((Oh, he hit. I was looking at the post from before that. In fact, I have the hit down on my notes, but I didn't address it in the post. Sorry for being disorganized today. I can only plead that my boss was on vacation this week and I was still working this morning. Ignore my last message. Nod's damage was figure in. The creature is still alive, but looks pretty bad off. I'll get it together for the next post!)).

Ooh—exposed hind leg. Even better!

((Well, more "tail," if the picture accurately reflects its position. Figure there's a certain amount of ambiguity based on the non-flexibility of the image being used. One or the other of its hindmost legs should be available in any event. Besides, its tail is "raised."))

Algernon lunges for a point between tail and back leg.…

…hooks with his L O V E, thrusts, and heaves!

"Go FISH!"

Need s'more battle cries. Don' think that 'un's a keeper.

((As usual, forgot to add level to this one. Make that a 16. Least I caught it before being reminded this time.))

Which doesn't work quite as well as it might have, but this is his first time wrestling a six-legged lizard, so some allowances have to be made.

Uh… mebbe have to try f'r a diff'rent pin. Hope he don't go pill bug on me.…

The creature dropped under my attack! I feel terrific; I would have laughed if it wasn't for this form. I wish I had known about this enchantment earlier. As I slide back to water the creature turns quickly and bites my arm.

Oh.

I couldn't even feel it, this new form is truly amazing. I hiss back to it, and as it gets ready to lunge I crouch and jump, attempting to hit it again, now on it's chest or neck.

Shi—

It didn't go as smooth as I expected.

Algernon grabs the beast by the tail. Strong… but he should have just used his hammer.

"Don't get fancy! Just kill it while we have its back!"

Weren't you thinking of doing the same thing, Baldy?

Well, yeah. But I stabbed it. You saw me!

"Don't get fancy! Just kill it while we have its back!"

Even in the midst of straining against the beast, Algernon grins. "Wanna make surrgh!—sure—ya keep its back! Ain't gonna take our bait twice!"

((Besides, he would have had to stop and pick his hammer up. This doesn't work, he'll draw a back-up.))
