((Oh, so I was ninja'd—double ninja'd, in fact! No wonder I ignored your post. Yeah, I thought Ravana's was last.

Geez, you ladies and your ninja'ing! And cats too, cuz Steerpike ninja'd me twice in DE2.))

He doesn't have to pull it more than a couple feet. How embarrassing!

((Oh, I don't know. Pool's only 40 feet across; I imagine that should have made somewhere in the vicinity of halfway.))

((By the way: the only reason Algernon didn't try additional throws earlier was because I figured by the time he'd recovered the second one, Steerpike might want to interject an opinion of what Mister Ripple was making of the affair. I was half expecting to end up trolling the beastie out of the water then.))

Baldhart makes her first throw, the lizard corpse sailing out over the water and then plunging in with a splash. It doesn't go as far as she'd like, and Algernon pulls it back in for her. It's not hard to fish the corpse back out of the water, though bodily fluids that had begun to dry are now running freely again, making the body slippery and leaving bits of gore on Baldhart's hands as she positions for another throw.

The second throw sends the body sailing end over end toward the center of the body of water. It is almost lost from sight when it hits, but the splash is loud. Algernon begins to reel the body in again, slowly pulling it through the water. Almost immediately there is a brief tug, or maybe a snag, that pulls the rope tight. It may simply be the body catching on the floor of the lake, or on something protruding up from it. Whatever it is, the body breaks free and Algernon is able to reel in another ten feet of rope unimpeded. Then the rope goes tight again, quickly. Something is definitely pulling on the other end this time, and it moves with force away from the direction of the party. So far, nothing is visible from the surface except the disturbances in the water caused by the rope itself.

Underwater Thing STR Check [1d20+6] = 10+6 = 16

((Algernon has time to drop the rope if he wants; alternatively he can try to hang on and battle the thing, possibly with help from those nearest him)).

((Oh, right: as if Algernon would drop the rope. Though thanks for the opportunity. :p ))

"I got somethin'!" Just in case anybody missed that.

"An' 'tain't small, neither!"

Algernon plus Primeval Instinct versus Big Mysterious Fishy: round one looks pretty close to even. At least from where he's standing… that is, still on dry ground. With Rydh's roll, might've even gained a couple feet.

Fishy might see it differently, of course. Have to wait on the judges' scorecards.

((Algeron rolled a 15 - don't forget to add level. Still 1 point too low, so... here's the other muscle-barb!))

I haven't unsheathed my sword and it's just as well. I grab the rope!

"I got a real good grip on here... Rydh, Algernon, as soon as this thing's on land, destroy it. I won't let go!"

((Rolling for Nod, since Phil gave me the OK and hasn't said otherwise since...))

Nod climbs down from my shoulders and fires at the beast.

"Eat this!"

Still crouching, I notice the creature is trying to move away. It's the last opportunity before a fight.

"I hope you all gave me the space I've asked," I announce in a dry voice and dip the knife in the water again, casting my spell. If they didn't move away it's not my problem not, it wouldn't be for lack of warning.

((Detect Magic. Uff.))

I watch for any sign of the creature, when I see even a glimpse of it, I will shoot.

don't think I need it, but here it is:
to late to edit above:
For "to hit" is it +1for level 2 or +2?
dex+3, race+1, lvl, and if nighttime +2.

If +2 for lvl 2, and night time, it makes the roll 12.

"Wow." I inspect the knife and chuckle.

Should I? I guess it'll make them freak out! But what better time than now? I think it'll help in a fight... and... it's... something new! I love new spells! Sweet new knowledge, I am so lucky!

The prospect of making a jape and testing a new spell is too tempting. Grinning like a little girl, I wet the knife and without hesitation, cast the unknown spell.

((Hm... Cadell can't do much if he's waiting for an attack from the hall... unless that's part of what you're going to post. Still doesn't help me now though. Should he turn around and help the others?))

Ahh, the creature arises, it doesn't look like something you can reason with. I aim a javelin an throw it at the creature.

((Damage))

There is something about Mauve's chuckle. You know what I'm talking about, don't you, Nissa?

Yes, yes... your next sacrifice is the knife. I'll miss the dreams, Baldy. It was fun to fight at your side, even if it was just images conjured by your dream.

Well, the point was to discover the magic in the knife. Now that I have, our work with the knife is done.

I accept your sacrifice. I speak for Brynjild when I say that.

I keep pulling the beast, but call out to Mauve, "Keep it! I'm sure it is strongest in your hands!"

Did you see her wet the knife, Nissa? Its magic really is fueled by water!

Why are you so happy about that?

I never thought I could help a magic user. Especially her. She's so happy now! I'll be happy if she stabs that monster in the face, or whatever she's planning to do...

((Actually I should post something now in case people want to react further before I make the map; if you're making an attack the creature in the water, that's all you can do this round)).

Algnernon, Baldhart, and Rydh struggle with the rope. The creature on the other end is strong, but not strong enough, and pulling arm over arm they force the thing inexorably toward shore. The water begins to roil more furiously as the creature nears shallower water. Suddenly, the rope slackens as the creature determines that it can no longer fight the pull of the rope and decides to head for the source of its troubles.

Its body breaches the water as it swims forward. Shots are fired, a javelin thrown ((resolution of these with the map, tonight)). A large, flat, a many-toothed maw breaches the water. The creature has a long, powerful body, thick tail, and more legs than it ought to.

Meanwhile, Mauve has teased out some of the secrets of the knife while the party hauls the creature out of the water. She recites the words of some spell, and the knife grows warm in her hands. When the spell is complete, Mauve lets out an involuntary gasp as her muscles stiffen. In rapid succession, limbs twist and elongate, scales form, her neck thickens and her head both widens and lengthens, jaw popping as bones give way to a new and wider mouth.

Standing in Mauve's place is something that looks like the unholy offspring of a fish demon and a tremendous shark. The knife itself has morphed to become part of the body, providing a long, sharp, bony protrusion extending from her right hand. The fingers and toes of the creature are webbed, it's muscles powerful, it's double-rows of teeth vicious. The thing is muscled and stands at a height just below that of Baldhart. Mauve's garments are ripped and torn, laying in tatters on the ground beside her.

Mauve sucks in a gasp of air. It burns. Despite the new body, the intelligence at work remains her own. She controls this form. But for now, the sting of dry air passing through the gill slits that have emerged in her neck is her most pressing priority. She feels as though she's suffocating. A few feet away, the dark cold water looks like an oasis in a desert, or a plank of wood for a drowning man. Her body tells her it cannot survive the air. Water. It needs water.

Nissa! I don't know if this is good or bad, but I'll keep a clear head. I hope the others do the same...

"I trust you, Mauve! I'll hold him down; you tear him apart!

"Come to me when the fight is done. I think you'll need my cloak more than I needed yours a few minutes ago!"
