Dragon's Egg - Act II

Nihal

Valar Lord
Holy crap! A profusion of swearing goes through my mind as I look at my hands—not my hands anymore—and to the water. I feel big, strong... and I'm suffocating!

I hear Baldhart's words.

She can't breath underwater. I can, I need! She'll be more trouble than help. Drat!

I gasp in response then sprint toward the water, while pointing to the opposite side. I leap and dive in the dark waters. If I'm lucky they'll get my message and I'll get some help to avoid the busy maw and swim around it.

As soon I'm out of the creature biting range I turn and attack it.

((Ignore the second, accidental-retarded-roll. I think I should roll damage too, just in case I have bonuses I don't know, but then I realized I don't know which dice should I roll. XD))

((Clarification: Baldhart is holding the creature in place with the rope. She is NOT going in the water again!

EDIT - Yeah, that's gotta be a hit since you haven't added your bonus, whatever it may be. So 15 or better if STR is up! I'm curious about the roll. The knife is 1d6, but when attached to an arm...?))

As strange and unnatural sounds are heard behind me, I do my best to shut them out, knowing I must focus on what I'm doing and not be distracted. Nothing yet is approaching from the hall, but it still may.

A splash behind me finally makes me look over my shoulder, and I see that the others have dragged something huge, fishlike and monstrous out of the water -- and Mauve's clothes lie in rags nearby. My mind goes blank but for horror and rage. I fire at the monster that Baldhart holds down--

--and miss completely. But even as the arrow flies, I realize there is no blood to be seen or smelled from Mauve -- and if so, how could she have been eaten by the monster? Stupid, Cadell! Look before you shoot!

((Actually, Baldhart would be holding a gnawed trog corpse in place with a rope, since the critter turned it loose. And speaking of turning loose.…))

Hey, it worked! Cool!

The rope falls to the ground as Algernon switches his readied hammer to his L O V E hand and rushes to meet the beastie as its legs hit dry land.

"THORRR!"

Yeah, you knew that was coming.

((Or 17, if there was sufficient space for this to count as a charge.))

Crunch.

Oops. I was s'posed to be quiet. Hope they don't mind too much.…

"Nod," I shout, "back on my shoulders!"

He gets close to me, but shoots from the ground.

I look around at my companions, baffled. Here they are assailing the monster, and yet Mauve is nowhere in sight. I ready an arrow and aim it at the monster, but do not yet fire. "Where is Mauve?"

((Clarification - I'm under the impression that we are fighting the REAL monster who is emerging from the water, not Mauve.))

"Do not attack Mauve! The knife-hand fish-demon is Mauve!" I say as I see Sir Cadell's confused expression.

Mauve is a fish-demon? What did that knife DO to her?! I nod at Baldhart's words, taking stock of where the new, scaly Mauve is in the water before aiming my arrow at the monster the others are attacking.

I let slip a few choice words in Elvish as my arrow misses. Thrice-blast my foul luck!

I hold my arrow, watching the damage being done.
"Impressive weapon use by all." I say aloud.
A quick scan of the water line for a second creature, if nothing noticed I will return to guard the hall and give a half hearted attempt to hide in the shadows.

I resist the urge to scowl at Aliron. At least you have two good hands! I keep an eye on the monster, knowing that it really doesn't matter whether I keep firing at it or return to keeping watch in the hall; my luck will be rubbish one way or the other.

I hate this place.

The rope goes slack, and whatever spawned those monsters that attacked us on the Bladnir has apparently found it's way here. This thing is huge!

I draw my sword, run to the left side of the creature ((Rydh's left, not the monster's left)) and attempt to jam my sword into it's vitals...

Here, fishy fishy...

Get the gaffe! This un's a biggun'!

Through all of this, I keep hearing Mauve's name being said. Mauve this, Mauve that. What's the girl gone and done now?

"I should say good hand weapons use by all, the archers failed all around."

[if reasonable to hit, I count 23+ damage.]

"I always knew there was something fishy about that Mauve."

((New map. Mauve is under the water after her attack, breathing. crap - Matthew isn't on the map; no time to fix it now. He can be just about anywhere, not already occupied, so just play it like that)).

Events transpire quickly. Those of you with a view of Mauve see her frightening transformation. Starving to get water into her gills, she leaps into the water, trying to bite at the creature as she passes it. Her teeth clamp onto the beast for a moment but fail to penetrate its hide, and seconds later she loses her hold and dives deeper into the water, the cold liquid soothing her gills and the panic that was growing as she suffocated on land.

The beast surges out of the lake, sending a spray of water over the party with a deep throaty hiss. Cadell looses an arrow, but misses the thing entirely.

Algernon drops the rope. No time to charge the beast, but he brings his hammer around in a heavy swing. The attack is on target, but instead of the expected crunch of bone there is simply a dull thud as the hammer bounces off of the thick, leathery hide of the creature. The attack appears to have done no damage.

Baldhart gets her swing in almost immediately after, and this attack cuts into the creature, digging a furrow along its hide and spilling its blood onto the stone floor. The attack gets the creature's attention, and it shifts its direction slightly, making directly for Baldhart.

From just behind Baldhart, Nodrick looses an arrow. This, too, is on target, but like Algernon's hammer, the arrow bounces off of the creature with no visible damage. Rydh finds the same result as his sword deals the thing a glancing blow that may have nicked the creature's thick skin but otherwise does no harm.

Darin has a cry on his lips as he rounds the creature on the other side, nearer the boat. He brings his hammer down at it with both hands:

Darin's Attack [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15

It's no use. The hammer bounces back at him much as Algernon's did. "By the All-Father!" Darin yells and prepares for another attack.

The creature, having fixated on Baldhart, now pushes itself toward her with its middle two legs, it's front legs rising off the ground. It snaps at her with its powerful jaws:

Monstrous Water Beast Attack [1d20+6] = 8+6 = 14

The attack hits, and for a moment the creature has Baldhart around the midsection:

Monstrous Water Beast Damage [1d8+6] = 3+6 = 9

Baldhart hears the crunch of scale armor and feels at least one rib snap as the crushing force of the creature clamps around her. Then, having squeezed as hard as it can, the creature releases its hold and gathers itself to attack again.

When my arrow fails, I fumble with my shield again, throwing it to the floor with a clang. Almost as soon as I look up, I see the monster grab Baldhart around the middle, and hear the unmistakable crack of bone. The thing releases her and moves back, preparing to strike again, and I snarl a curse as I draw my sword. Archery isn't working, but this might. Maybe I can stab into its mouth or its eye. Suicidal perhaps, but it would be a worthy sacrifice if it saved my friends. ((Not called shots, just wishful thinking on Cadell's part.))

I spring forward, pushing past those in front of me as I lunge. "Angau!"

Not good, the hide is too thick!

I swim a bit deeper into the lake, aware that I'm in some advantage now. Breathing large gulps of water, I turn back and swim the faster I can, propelling myself out of the water and on the creature's back or sides and thrusting my blade-hand deep in its hide.

((Attack. It was a charge on a foe with his back turned to me. Apply the bonuses and penalties as needed, for I have no idea of what they would be.))

((Damage. Mauve is a beast!))

Too strong! Nissa... the next attack could mean instant death!

((Well, max damage would bring Baldy to -8 HP giving 2 turns for a healer to save her butt.))

"Shield wall... need to..."

Nod fires...

I could disengage and move behind Algernon and Darin, but what good would it do for the others. I must not flee!

"DIE!"

I shove my sword into its gaping maw!

((Uh-oh!))

((And if that's a miss... major ouch. Only rolling damage in case the monster exposed a weak spot.))
