Dragon's Egg - Act II

Sparkie

Dark Lord
I hear the thud of the crossbow bolt, and look down at Mauve's feet. I don't need to look back to know who shot that particular missile.

"Aliron!" I scream. "Pull her back!"

Mauve starts towards Baldhart, and I know what she's thinking. I need to buy them time. The seconds they need may cost me my life, but it's worth it if others are saved. I move to the corner of the hallway, slip past Darin, and head straight for the javelin thrower between me and the spellcaster. Sword in hand, I thrust toward its ribs...

Time. I hope I've bought them enough time...

I hold my breath when the gas rolls in, hoping I won't inhale it.

((CON of 8. Not sure if I passed that or not. Pretty sure I did.))

I shoot down the corridor at the one directly in front of me (us).

((Yeah...))

I grab Burnbright and pull her back.

[wasted another crit on trying to pull Burnbright back. ARG!]

The rogue is hot tonight, so hot tonight!

"You need to stay here and be ready to use your crossbow on a target other then Mother earth. You are their target. What they want you for is clearly not going to be good for you, or for any other humanoid around! They would pick you up and carry you off alot easier then I just did! Reload your crossbow and make sure you don't accidently loose a bolt again. You could have injured or killed one of our group! The first lesson of combat, THINK! Before you do something stupid! Something some in this group shold learn as you should."
[granted I would be in a great position if I was Ankari now, but...]

Magic. Can magic really be stronger than me?

This is not the kind of foe you were trained for. You need your friends.

They are here for me. They are so beautiful... all of them. I want to tell them...

Focus, Baldy. If anyone can muscle her way out of magic, it's you!

...

...

...

The lizard queen. Worthy opponent. If I live to, you and I must...

Move. Move! MOVE!

"Don't worry Aliron. I'll make sure she stays back." Turning to Burnbright. "I hope I won't need to use force to do so. But I am prepared for that if needed."

((My action this round is keeping Burnbright as far back as possible.))

EDIT: a strength roll if needed

Darin and Cadell lower Baldhart as Aliron pulls Burnbright bodily back over the table. She gives a kick of her legs as she goes over, trying to squirm free, but she's no match for Aliron's strength. When the knight, Matthew, steps beside her as well, she settles onto her knees and starts reloading her crossbow. "They're getting killed out there!" she yells, her face burning.

Mauve has moved to help Darin and Cadell, and between the three of them, they manage to tip Baldhart over. As Baldhart is being tipped, Nodrick rolls free and rises to fire an arrow at the reptile in front of him, but the shot goes wide. With Baldhart on her side, however, Cadell, Mauve, and Darin are able to drag her back toward the door.

Rydh dashes into the fray, rounding the corner on his way toward the caster. Two of the javelin-wielders bar his way, though having both thrown their javelins they are unarmed. Rydh stabs at one with his sword, cutting a chunk from the creature. The female caster is behind them, and she takes a short step to position herself in the corridor and attempts to cast her spell:

Reptile Caster check [1d20+4] = 11+4 = 15

The spell is successful, and with a flourish of her staff, she sends a small bead of blue light into the hallway, at the wall just behind Nodrick. When the blue light hits, it erupts in a tremendous boom, sonic waves jarring teeth and moving physically through bodies, damaging tissue.

Reptile Sound Damage [1d8] = 3

((-3 HP to Rydh, Baldhart, Cadell, Nodrick, Mauve, and Darin; need CON save from each as well (except for Baldhart) )).

The reptiles guarding the caster lash out at Rydh with the only weapons they have, their claws:

Reptile Attack [1d20+1] = 16+1 = 17

Reptile Attack [1d20+1] = 4+1 = 5

Rydh twists away from the second reptile, but the injured reptile directly in front of Rydh lands his attack.

Reptile Claw Damage [1d4] = 2

((-2 HP to Rydh))

Ankari fires another arrow at the reptile directly in front of him. The things looks battered and bloody, but has enough energy to dash toward Ankari as he fires. The arrow misses, and the weaponless creature takes a claw swipe at Ankari:

Reptile Attack [1d20+2] = 6+2 = 8

The creature is no match for Ankari's speed, and he easily dodges the blow.

Meanwhile, the reptile directly in front of Nod, who Nod just missed with his own attack, draws back an arrow and in one smooth motion releases a shot at the halfing:

Reptile Attack [1d20+2] = 15+2 = 17

The arrow catches the halfling in the shoulder, just above the collar bone:

Reptile Damage [1d6] = 2

((-2 HP to Nodrick)).

With Baldhart moved out of sight of the caster, and with the chaos in the hall, Darin sets Baldhart on the ground and twists around, hammer in hand, ready to charge into the fray. "The tide of battle goes against us!" he yells. "To the foe, friends, before we are lost!"

Burnbright's face is streaked with tears as she struggles to reload her weapon.

I sigh silently in relief as my comrades and I manage to carry Baldhart away from the lizard queen, despite the injury which causes me to limp and sends jolts of pain through me with every step.

((Just a note here, should that be costing him more HP? He can't reach the javelin to pull it out, if it's still stuck in his leg...))

We lay her down and I slowly straighten up, though my injured leg shakes under me still. Through streaming eyes I see a burst of blue light, and a tremendous explosion seems to shake the very tunnel, making me stagger. I stumble again with a cry of pain, my ears ringing.

This is too much for me. Everything at once... too much.

((No, the HP damage from the initial attack is all Cadell will take from the javelin. You can RP it as still in his leg, or have it fall out or whatever, but generally there aren't ongoing HP loss from bleeding or arrows sticking in your or whatever unless: 1) the attack specifically states there is ongoing damage; or 2) you're unconscious and bleeding to death)).

We're losing this battle, we need all the help we can get. "Fine, but don't even think of going past this table." I throw a Javelin at the closest enemy that I can see.

"Shield bash queen's guards...!" I manage to say it! "Kill queen. Aliron, help Ankari... Matthew, kill queen!"

I can move!

A finger. A toe.

Well... it's a start.

We made it!

The joy I'm feeling is cut short when a floating blue light appears on the corridor.

It's too small.

This spell is unknown to me, but I have an ominous sensation. I hold my breath, starting to crouch by instinct.

Too slow.

The wave violently hits my body. I feel the pain only for a second or so, my head being throw back, my balance lost. I see the ceiling, then the darkness, never feeling my back hit the stone.

The light of the spell shoots past me, and the accompanying sound feels like an explosion in my head. It throws me off balance for a moment, and the creature I hit is able to hit back. ((Rydh's down to 3 HP. Nice knowin' ya, guys!))

A good CON save? Must be my lucky day.

Alright. Now I'm mad.

With a mighty flourish, I raise my blade and bring it down as hard as I can. I'll finish the engagement I started, even if it kills me.

((Rydh attacks the same reptile as before.))

Should be a hit...

... And a deadly one at that!

I may die, but I'm taking a lizard or two with me.

((Sorry, Nihal. Rydh's out of Mana, so he can't heal.))

((I'm down to half now, 5 HP))

My crossbow clatters to the ground. I pull my dagger out, screaming with rage. "Die! Everyone must die!" The arrow wobbling out of my collarbone, I hiss and leap crookedly at the lizard in front of me, the force of the blue light still rattling in my head.

((Edit: CON check))

Over the wall I charge, leaving my bow behind, towards the reptile that is now facing Ankari, taking care of the claws of the reptile I have to pass. I draw my sword and prepare to backstab.
[[I believe the distance is too much to have an attack this round. So I didn't include a roll.]]

[[Its 10 spaces, with a table and fighting going on so I would assume dodging, weaving and trying not to draw attention to myself, I would not make it to the reptile and still attack this round.]]

[[With all the noise do I need to make a ability roll? The one I have to pass made an attack so might not catch me before I run by.
Ankari's reptile, He is facing away and there was a loud "noise"?]]]

Still dazed by the explosion, hampered by my wound and gagging on the stench, I begin to crawl toward Nodrick. I have an idea. It may be a foolish one, and I know I only have one chance, but if this works, it may turn the tables in our favor.

I backstab Ankari's reptile.

1x2=2

forgot the "#" on first roll, got a 21, but not sure what the extra junk was so rolled again.

Maybe we scratched the lizard enough to kill it.

Don't mess with the theif, I am pure evil! I will give a nasty festering paper cut, if you survive it will annoy you for days.

From behind the upturned table, Burnbright has managed to reload her crossbow. She points it into the hallway, biting her lip and looking for a clear shot at an enemy. Matthew throws a javelin down the long hallway. With Mauve down, the only person between him and his target is the dwarf, Darin. The javelin streaks down the hall, looking to be on target, but even the slightest variation is magnified over the distance thrown and the javelin misses its target by inches.

Burnbright edges herself closer to Matthew, taking aim at the same target. She bites her lip hard enough to draw blood, then pulls the trigger:

Burnbright Attack [1d20-4] = 6-4 = 2

Burnbright Damage [1d6] = 4

Burnbright's attack goes horribly wrong, the crossbow angle misjudged by being too low. The bolt strikes Darin in the back of the shoulder as he rushes down the corridor toward the enemy. Burnbright shrieks and drops the crossbow as if its on fire.

Baldhart feels a tingling along her extremities, which starts to spread rapidly, and then just as quick as the effect took her, it is broken. Baldhart can move again, though at the moment she finds herself laying down next to the motionless Mauve. A quick look reassures Baldhart that Mauve is breathing.

Rydh thrusts at the lizard in front of him. The attack is swift and the creature has no time to evade. The sword runs it through and the reptile slumps to the ground in silence, bleeding black blood. The reptile spellcaster hisses in fury and leaps back a few feet, putting some distance between herself and Rydh.

The other javelin thrower next to Rydh lunges with its claws:

Reptile Attack [1d20+1] = 13+1 = 14

The attack is swift, but Rydh is able to bring his shield around in time to intercept the claws. The creature grunts and steps slightly to its left, putting itself directly between Rydh and the female.

Nodrick rushes forward, seemingly crazed, slashing wildly at the reptile in front of him. The creature dodges furiously, but Nodrick manages to get a shallow cut in, drawing blood. Darin is suddenly next to him, bleeding from a shoulder wound where a bolt still protrudes from his armored body. With a roar, Darin brings his hammer around:

Darin's Attack [1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18

The dodging is all too much for the creature, who takes the brunt of the attack across its upper arm and is knocked into the wall.

Darin's Damage [1d8+2] = 4+2 = 6

The reptile is not down, however, and it recovers itself with a hiss, its tongue playing along the outside of its mouth. The creature lets it bow drop and swipes at Darin:

Reptile Attack [1d20+2] = 7+2 = 9

The dwarf knocks the attack aside with ease.

Ankari fires an arrow at his foe as it closes with him, but the attack misses. The wounded creature lashes out with one clawed hand, its eyes black pits in the dim light at this end of the corridor:

Reptile Attack [1d20+2] = 19+2 = 21

The strike is successful, and the creature's foul claws carve a bloody path across Ankari's leg:

Reptile Damage [1d4+2] = 4+2 = 6 ((-6 HP to Ankari)).

Aliron has scrambled over the tables and rushes down the hallway, brushing past Darin to close in on Ankari's opponent. He closes the distance quickly, arriving behind the reptile just as it injures Ankari.

Cadell finds the dazing effect of the sonic burst fading. He gives his head a slight shake, clearing the last remnants of confusion, and is able to stand. To his right, he sees Rydh and the javelin thrower, and beyond them the female reptile, who now has her staff crossed in front of her in a defensive gesture. Directly in front of Cadell, Nod, Darin, and others are locked in combat.
