Dragon's Egg - Act II

((For what it's worth: I make it about twenty minutes' normal walking from the temple to where everyone else is right now, based on a review of previous posts. Plus or minus a couple. Possibly slightly less, since the party covered ground at a slower pace after encountering the trog. Don't nobody hold your breath. Well, not to wait for Hiljikki, at least.… ;) ))

"Matthew, stay with Burnbright," I say, and I move up to our flimsy barricade. Baldhart has stopped moving. Magic!

"Cadell, Darin!" I shout as I yank the table out of the way...

The Unseen Servant

"Move the wall! Protect Baldhart!"

I move to the place where Baldhart stood not long ago, my sword at the ready. I'm a realist, so I already know I'm dead.

And the smile comes back to my face.

[My arrow was ready, so I should be able to get a shot off before anyone charges, although I see 2 reptiles, I probably wouldn't notice the elf behind. I hope the blessed arrow hits the right target.]

YATZEEEE!

[I think I hit]
Any additional for natural 20?

"Blessed be to God!"
I would have shot the one that looked more of a leader, without consideration of Ankari's location.
[in progression, if Baldy and rider is in the hallway, I would shoot towards the side they weren't, if they were in the process it doesn't matter.]

[As my shot did not end the battle, I prepare another arrow. As they converge I might need to switch to stealth mode and try to get by the excitement for some surgical excavations of their backsides.]
"I pray God guide this arrow, may it strike true, and this sword at my side guide it so my enemies will fall in thy name..."
[and give me the strength, if it need be, as a final act of defiance even in the face of death to steal their prize from them and do so without the suffering of the prize, or her even knowing it is coming, for the good of the world and for her. With a quick glance at Burnbright.]
"Have your crossbow ready child, we might need every person fighting to win this. Stay ready. If I call you, come and kneel behind the table and shoot the attackers." [Bless her bolt, that if she fire it, it strikes true. Because if I call her, it will be the final acts. Let her have the one victory.]
{if someone moved the table, I will push it back to block the doorway.}

"Move the wall! Protect Baldhart!"

((That's what Cadell is already doing -- he's trying to pull her back behind the barricade, with his shield in front of her so she doesn't get hurt. But he needs help, so if someone would be so kind, that'd be much appreciated!))

[I thought Burnbright was in the room. Only takes grabbing the leg of the table and pivoting it to open, it will restrict my bowshot if I got one for that limited time, but it will be quick. The way I read it Ryd pulled the table back to help Baldhart.
If I need to go out, I can pull it back and signal whoever else is in the room to replace it. For me to leave we must still have good chances of winning.
Str of 9 won't help much for dragging a tank back.
My intentions are Burnbright only fights...once, if we will lose.]

((OK, a certain amount of strategizing is fine and good, but in the interest of verisimilitude, if you want to communicate plans and strategies to other players, try to do it through actual conversation and be cognizant of what you can do in a six second round. Lengthy, and presumably telepathic, planning doesn't make much sense in the heat of battle :D )).

"If I need to go out, I can pull back the table and signal one of you (whoever else is in the room) to replace it." [this should have been spoken]"If you can use it, the spear is meant to impale a charging opponent, just pull the rope."

I shift so I stand right beside Baldhart, shielding her from her side if need be. I resist the urge to roll my eyes at Rydh, and growl at him through clenched teeth. "You could help!"

Nodrick stays with me! Sir Cadell comes to me! Mauve's spell--oh... poor thing. Rydh's commands--yes, a wall, Sir Cadell! Please keep the shield up! Was that... Aliron's arrow? They risk so much over me. They are true friends. Nissa, I pray that they do not die because of me!

"I think we're better off staying away from this battle."

Nissa! Is he really going to sit there when the rest of us risk everything?

Sometimes fear overtakes a man, no matter how hard he has trained.

But if we fall, he and Burnbright die as well!

Cowardice is as selfish as it is self-destructive. Sorry I can't communicate with his God of Courage. That's not my place. Just know that the rest of your friends are going above and beyond to save your sorry butt.

I will thank them if I live to.

In the mean time, I will pray with you, Baldy. Just like a valkyrie prayed with me while I was trapped in an immoble body awaiting death.

A valkyrie was with you, too? Please, tell me about her...

((As long as Steerpike's cool with you giving a tug on Baldy's arm, finding you can't budge her and raising your shield as Rydh calls for you and Darin to make a wall, I can edit "behind" to say "beside."

I think it's clear that Cadell would not block Baldhart's back, which is facing Aliron.))

Being positioned behind the foe, Ankari looses an arrow, striking the reptile to his left in the back. The creature hisses loudly and spins, clearly not realizing that one of the party had moved behind it.

Even as Ankari's arrow is in flight, Baldhart rushes forward, heading toward the other reptile. As she crosses the space by the adjoining corridor, however, her muscles become suddenly leaden and she stumbles to a complete stop, unable to move or talk. Out of the corner of her eye, she makes out shaped in the corridor - the other reptiles.

Nodrick hangs on to Baldhart for dear life, turning his body to see down the adjacent corridor. The two javelin-wielders are there, armed again, and behind them the female caster. Nodrick looses an arrow of his own, but it speeds harmlessly past the foe, clattering down the hallway beyond.

Cadell is at Baldhart's side quickly, trying to move the large woman back toward safety. It's no use - Baldhart won't budge. Cadell positions himself between Baldhart and the javelin-wielders and caster, continuing to try to move his comrade.

Darin, who looked ready to charge the nearest foe and smash his hammer down on them, rushes to Cadell's side. They begin to tilt Baldhart, moving her to a position where they can carry her. Between the two, they are able to shift the large warrior. Nodrick jostles atop Baldhart's shoulder as the other two start to lower her.

Mauve tries to shelter herself as best she can, reciting another spell. It's no surprise to her when it fizzles and sends a wave of runaway magic along her body like an electric charge ((-1 HP Mauve)).

Rydh pushes past the table Aliron has set up as a makeshift blockade just as Mauve is shuddering from the runaway magic. He takes up Baldhart's former position in the hallway, assessing the situation.

As soon as Rydh is clear, Aliron looses an arrow of his own, striking the same reptile Ankari hit in the back as it is spinning. The arrow embeds itself deeply. The reptile stumbles forward half a step and drops its bow, trying to reach behind its back to pull the embedded arrow free. It releases a tremendous stench as it does so, but it does not fall. ((Need a CON save from Cadell, Nod, and Ankari)).

The female lizard in the hallway is hissing and gesturing.

Burnbright dashes to where Aliron stands, staying just behind him and craning her neck to see down the hallway. "Baldhart's down there!" she yells. "What's wrong with her?" She lifts the crossbow in wavering hands, but doesn't release a bolt, swinging the tip side to side in a short path, contemplating how to help without skewering one of her companions.

The unharmed lizard in the main hallway fixes the frozen Baldhart with a reptilian grin and lets fly an arrow of its own:

Reptile Attack [1d20] = 12+2

Reptile Damage [1d6] = 2

The arrow catches Baldhart in the side, finding a weak point in her armor and cutting a swath along her flesh. It does not stay in, however, falling to the stone floor, tip bloody ((-2 HP to Baldhart)).

The javelin-wielders throw as one, the first aiming for Cadell and the second for Darin as the two begin to move Baldhart:

Reptile Damage [1d6] = 2

Reptile Attacks Darin [1d20+1] = 8+1 = 9

Reptile Damage - Cadell [1d4] = 2

The one aiming for Cadell aims true, and as he's trying to move Baldhart he feels a searing pain along the back of his leg as the javelin scores a hit ((-2 HP to Cadell)).

The javelin thrown at Darin bounces off the dwarf's armor and falls harmlessly to the floor.

The arrow and javelin strikes are too much for Burnbright, and with a yell she attempts to clamber over the table into the hallway. She catches her foot and falls face-first to the stone floor, accidentally discharging her bolt into the ground at Mauve's feet.

The female lizard assesses the situation swiftly, then raises her staff and begins to make ominous sounds and movements...

As Darin and I manage to lower Baldhart toward the floor so we can carry her back, the fighting continues around us; I dare not look up to see what is going on. Soon I cannot anyway, as the same stench that had flooded the chamber now fills the hallway. I choke and cough for air, my eyes streaming again.

((Wow. That sucks. ._.))

A stabbing pain erupts in the back of my right leg, and it buckles under me. I fall hard to one knee, the weight of Rydh's shield, Baldhart and Nodrick bearing down on me. I dare not, cannot, let go of them.

Con Check: [1d20] = 11 (Do I add my level to this roll?)

((Then my Con check is a 12))

No time to think. People are falling, and they are not the enemy.

Gas fills the air, choking the vitality from me. I release another shot:

((Do I get a bonus for attacking from behind?))

Longbow Attack: [1d20+3] = 6+3 = 9 (My eyes are watering)

((In case I did hit, I'll be attacking the same from the previous round))

((Ah, looks like I cut and pasted the wrong die roll for the attack on Cadell. Sorry. It did hit.

Yes. always add level and ability modifier to ability checks)).

They're screwed!

"?!" A bolt misses my feet. Burnbright. I swear under my breath. "Hold the girl!"

I don't have the protection.

I trust my instincts, leaving the girl for the people in the room and dashing to Baldhart, dropping my spear right before the opening. I can hear the sound. Casting? Even if we manage to move her will they be able to get out of the way in time? Will I?

I don't have the mobility.

There is one last option.

I don't have the power. But there is always the last resort.

With this thought I also get hold of her and pull.

((With 3 people moving her I don't think a STR is needed, but anyway, just for the "fun".))
[1d20] = 7 #STR check
