Dragon's Egg - Act II

A thought occurs to me, and I speak softly to the others.

"Before we go much further, I think it may be useful to bind any spare cloth we have over our faces to guard against the lizards' stench. And if someone would help me to do so, I would be very grateful."

((Aliron says he's moving in to check it out, then moving back to report to the party, so I'm just going to post what he saw here in the thread under the assumption he's telling everyone)).

Three smaller lizards are in the middle of the corridor as you peek around. They have a net that they've attached to the ceiling, with thin wire extending down along the wall. One of the lizards has the end of the wire in its hand, and the creature is bent over the floor as though he means to make a trip wire with it. The other two are talking in their incomprehensible tongue and making motions as to where the wire should go. They are clearly arguing about it. As you watch, the one holding the trip wire angrily wedges the end of the wire into a crack in the floor, turns around, and dives on one of the other lizards. The third jumps in and they turn into a hissing, biting, arguing, mass of lizard rolling around the corridor.

Infighting. We can use this.

"We charge these creatures now, before they can report. Come on, we'll decend uopn them now while they're distracted!"

I'll wait for my companions for but a moment. If they delay, I'm going in among the scrappers alone.

I nod at knight then at the cleric.
((If I'm near to Cadell I help him))

A net? Do they mean to capture us alive? Or... to keep us still while they work on some nasty spell.

I whisper to them. "Do not allow any to escape and hold your tongue when near them."

"Sounds like a plan to me," I reply quietly. "Ready when you are."

I wait only seconds for others to move…

((…but I assume others get ~24 hours to post, so I'm not expecting to rush ahead of the group.))

I set my jaw and nod at Aliron's report and the others' decisions to act. I wait only long enough to fit my bow into the wooden cup Hiljikki carved for me, then nock an arrow and prepare to move forth.

Sword in hand I move quickly back to the corner,
My target is a back, which ever lizard back is closest.

8 damage (roll didn't double)

I CHARGE in with Aliron, making myself into an obvious distraction!

I hit the nearest lizard…
embed

…maybe not in the kill spot…
embed

…but in a place where I can bat his body into one of his pals…
embed

…which will hopefully leave the lizards stunned, like I did to the fire demons at the burning temple.

I hold my breath as I get close…
embed

…but hope the lizards won't fart in my face!

((Primal Instinct allows a barbarian to hold breath for a long period of time, which can be done without a check at the GM's discretion. If that action is allowed with no check, please disregard the crappy roll. I only rolled just in case I had to.))

As Baldhart charges in and knocks one lizard into another, I draw back my arrow and aim at the further of the two. My prosthesis is wobbly and uncomfortable, and Rydh's shield weighs down by arm; I hope neither of those impact my shooting too much.

embed

((-1 for the heavy shield [actually -2, but with a +1 DEX mod], another -1 for the ouchy prosthesis. Do I need to roll damage if the attack is obviously a fail?))

The arrow misses completely, hitting the wall behind the lizards and breaking. I let out my breath in a hiss to smother the curse I wish to voice, and nock another arrow. Better luck next time, I hope!

I position my spear in a parry stance, watching the battle unfold and the corridor behind the lizards. It would be extremely stupid and unnecessary to risk a spell now we're outnumbering our foes.

((dodge stance, holding breath in case they're too close to lizards))

I shoot at the one Baldhart charged. "Ya!"

((Sidekick says I hit, so I'll just take his word for it. Still using my crossbow since no one gave me the other one in-game.))

embed

"Ouch."

((Phil, roll damage anyway. I think stunning the enemy means his AC drops. I rolled a 20 or 21 for the STR check, so the stun likely worked.

EDIT - Phil, you DID hit the enemy. Don't you have a 17 in DEX? That means you add 2 to the to-hit roll, so you rolled a 13. I'm sure that's a hit!

EDIT 2 - 11… forgot about the situational. Still, my first paragraph applies.))

((To clarify, my stun attempt was aimed at the two that Alin didn't go after. Ankari and Nod each hit the two involved in the stun attack. So all 3 took 8-9 damage if Nod and Ankari hit.))

Baldharts charge was truly amazing, she can be truly terrifing at times.

Anyway, as this is the first battle in a while that I can fight unhindered, I plan to take advantage if that. I charge any oppenet still standing.

((a 1, really?)

((No map yet. I'm on a new linux install on my laptop and I just realized my map files aren't here :p )).

Watching from around the corner, Aliron can just make out the fighting reptiles as he draws his weapon. The creatures are biting and clawing one another, and are thoroughly unconcerned with what else might be happening in the corridor. When one has its back to the party, Aliron charges, striking the creature a devastating blow to the back. It lets out a reptilian screech, stiffens, then crumples to the floor.

Baldhart is on Aliron's heels, bringing around a tremendous blow of her own, which catches the reptile along its arm and side, spinning it around. Using the momentum of her charge, Baldhart plows into the creature, knocking it into its comrade.

((Reptile saves v. stun

Reptile Badlhart charged:

Reptile Save [1d20+1] = 1+1 = 2

Second Reptile

http://www.unseenservant.com/Default.asp?do=showone&id=10

Not sure what happened to my second cut and paste, but it was 4)).

Both reptiles are stunned by the ferocity of the attack, their bodies tangling with each other as one falls prone, the other swaying on its feet. Cadell fires an arrow at the one Baldhart struck, but with the commotion in the corridor and Baldhart knocking the lizards around, the arrow can't find its target. Likewise, Ankari's shot misses home. Both arrows disappear into the darkness beyond, and can be heard clattering against stone.

Rydh pushes past his comrades in melee combat and leaps over the standing lizard. It sways drunkenly below him, barely registering the leap, then tries to turn itself toward Rydh. When Rydh lands, he spins and makes an immediate attack, but his blade misses the lizard by inches.

Nodrick tries to steady himself and loose an arrow at the creature Baldhart struck. Even with Baldhart fighting, the arrow strikes its target, barely, and the creature lies motionless, bleeding out on the ground.

Matthew charges in as well, but in the close quarters he is unable to get a clean shot at the lizard, which still stands, shaking its head as it tries to regain its senses.

Darin remains behind those who charged in, hammer in hand, grumbling at his inability to get close enough to the remaining lizard to brain it.

((The remaining lizard can be hit in melee by Rydh, Baldhart, Aliron, or Matthew. Nodrick can shoot at it. Ranged attacks from the rest of the group will be risky as the lizard is surrounded by party members and can barely be seen by the rest of the group)).
