((Clarification: I'm using a two-handed sword, so the shield is of no use to me, I assume. I think Matthew would know that, so hopefully, he's not shieldless, which is good since he rolled a 1—which is what got me clobbered on my last turn!

I'm also wearing leather armor. I'm not sure what that does for me… I suppose it simply negates my lousy dexterity.))

((Yes, the leather offsets your DEX, basically. Brings you back to a 10 AC instead of 8. The coif gives you an 11 AC for your head. You're strong enough that if you want to catch the shield and swing your two-handed sword one-handed, that's fine but with a -2 mod to hit/damage)).

((I need all the damage I can get! That fish is going down… I hope!

Besides… the shield would only bring my armor up to 11. And what are the odds of an enemy rolling exactly 11, then following that roll with its maximum damage? Oh yeah. Well, uh, what are the odds of that happening twice?))

Dark Lord
Ankari gains the fo'c'sle, though his attack misses again. Whether due to an ill wind blowing over the ship, or the tossing of the waves, or sheer bad luck, it is unlike him to miss. Perhaps some providence shines on these foul creatures?

((Ominous, don'cha think?))

*****

And Drusillia charged through the massive melee when she heard the cry. Bravely it was that she cut the skull-crowned orc down. She saw her General, prone and bleeding, and she knelt to pray with her hands on his chest. "Battle-Father, hear my plea and let your servant live. For to win the day His life must be spared."

3rd of Battles - Codex 6:238,239

*****

The hellspawn falls lifeless before me, and I hear the grunt coming from the Foc's'le.

"Ung..!"

It's Baldhart. It would take much to hurt that woman. I have to help her.

I look to the Elf behind me and motion to the starboard staircase leading to the front of the ship. "Quickly, up there!" I say, and I run as fast as I can to the stairs. As I do, I'm encouraged to hear Baldhart's retort: "You just made your last mistake, demon!"

Ankari fires again, and this time the arrow flies true, thudding into the hip of the tremendous red-scaled fish demon as its attention is trained on Matthew. The arrow gets the creature's attention, and it makes a quarter turn then lunges at Ankari with its trident, extending the long weapon as it attacks:

embed?2890344.jpg

((NOTE: The above should be a 16, because the Fish Demon is still intimidated; I believe that still hits, but I don't have your exact AC in front of me, Ankari. If it misses, let me know)).

embed?2890352.jpg

The attack hits, and there is strength behind it. The upward-thrusting tines of the trident catch Ankari just below the shoulder, the force of it threatening to lift him from the deck. Ankari fights and holds his ground, however, and as the fish demon retracts its trident, trailing Ankari's blood across the deck, a hint of disappointment crosses its fishy visage.

Baldhart, undaunted by the fish demon's strike against her, slashes her two-handed sword in a wide arc. The fish demon raises its arm in an ill-advised attempt to block the attack, but Baldhart's blade cuts through scale, flesh, and bone, severing the arm and embedding itself into the creature's neck in a gout of blood. The stone-carved knife tumbles to the deck, still held in the fish demons severed hand, and an instant later the body of the fish demon joins it.

Matthew starts to toss his shield to Baldhart, then reassesses the situation in but an instant, noting that she fights with both hands, and decides to attack the fish demon instead. Even the brief hesitation has given the fish demon a chance to move just enough that Matthew's judgment of its position is off. The attack goes wide. The fish demon in turn hesitates a moment as its leader turns to attack Ankari, but its hesitation is also brief and it slashes at Matthew with a taloned hand:

embed?2890668.jpg
embed?2890675.jpg

As Matthew raises his shield to block the attack, the fish demon feints, then strikes low, scoring its claws along Matthew's leg. The Knight feels a searing pain, though he deems the blow non-life threatening.

Rydh leaves the fallen creature near the quarterdeck stairs and races past Bior and Rodrico, heading for the engagement on the fo'c'sle. He arrives on the scene just in time to see a severed fish demon hand spiraling upward and then falling onto the deck, where it is joined by the corpse of a fish demon whose neck has been neatly sliced open by Baldhart.

Cadell hears Rydh urging him to the fo'c'sle, but as he begins to follow, Rodrico grabs his arm, motioning to the captain who sits on the deck, groaning and leaning against his first mate. "We should move him to his quarters."

The only other action visible from the fo'c'sle concerns the other side of the quarterdeck, where the hand descending the stairs stops dead in his tracks, watching as two other ship's hand attend to the boy laying on the deck. The man pales, then bows his head.

Her prayer uttered, the cleric cast her spell. Her General stood up and together woman and man shouted praise to Betula. He rallied his honor guard and into the fray they ran, bound to die for our Lord. Drusillia shed a single tear as she trailed after, because she loved life, as should we all.

I approach Baldhart as fast as I can and utter the spell. Her abdomen wound is deep; she must be cured.

((Rydh casts Cure Light Wounds. Life Magic spell - no roll neccesary to cast. Rydh's now down to 4 Mana.))

Why hold back, Baldy? He's scared of you?

Nissa's right on all counts but the nickname. I should have landed a much harder blow than that!

No matter. I keep my blade pointed directly at the big fish to deter him. He is scared of me. I am certain that he will not dare pass me. I can keep him here long enough to be pelted by arrows!

I grin in satisfaction as my arrow strikes flesh. Such things earn the attention of their opposites. The big fish's trident leaves my body with some of my blood on it. Odd. Life's essence streaming through the air and catching the light of the sun is beautiful. The moment passes. I scream in agony as I register the pain.

I let fly another arrow (at the big fish) with a curse to the sea and all within it.

I look briefly toward the others battling the fish-demons on the fo'c'sle, then decide they can take care of themselves for a moment. I gently help Rodrico lift and carry the captain to his quarters, and wish for a moment that I were a healer instead of a knight.

((I figure since I've missed so much time here I shouldn't try to barge in on the fighting. Hope that's okay.))

((Looks like everyone is in the same position as before, so no new map. Just note that the fish demon between Rydh and Baldhart showing on the last map is dead)).

Rydh steps past the carnage left by Baldhart - a severed limb, bits of scale and blood pooling on the deck, the cloying odor of the fish demon's carcass - and touches his hands softly to Baldhart. A strange warmth suffuses her body and her wounds begin to knit. Within seconds, her bleeding has stopped and all that is left of her wound is a long, thin line of pink across her flesh and an itch to go with it.

Baldhart attacks the fish demon leader with renewed vigor, but the thing has become a creature possessed. Its trident is a blur as it uses the haft to deflect Baldhart's blow to one side, then catches Matthew's thrust in the tines of its weapon, forcing the attack harmlessly upward. The flurry of activity does not save it from Ankari's arrow, however, and this second shot embeds itself in the fish demons' ribs, though well below where the heart might be were it human. Still moving with almost preternatural speed, the thing ends the complex motion of its trident with another thrust at Ankari, seeking to repay the ranger for drawings its blood:

embed?2906633.jpg

Ankari turns with the thrust, causing the sharp points of the trident to glance off his armor. The weapons scores a line across the ranger's leather but does not penetrate it.

The other fish demon standing near Matthew studies the scene a moment, as though determining where best to strike. Then, however, appearing to recognize that it is not the focus of any hostile attention, and perhaps ruminating on the fate of most of its comrades, the thing turns to the railing and launches itself overboard.

Rodrico looks grateful for Cadell's help as the two help Bior to his cabin, the captain protesting all the way. Not content to go quietly, he twists himself in Cadell's arms just before reaching the door and bellows to the ship's hands gathered around the body of the boy: "There's no time fer standin' lads! Get us back under full sail, and be quick about it. No tellin' whether any of them demons what's still in the water might take a notion to climb aboard!"

Alarmed by the idea, the ship's hands launch themselves into the rigging, climbing hand over fist back from whence they came only moments before, calling out instructions to one another as they try to coordinate the raising of the sail back to its full position.

Cadell only catches a moment of this before he and Rodrico enter the captain's cabin. The room is well-furnished and neatly kept, despite the appearances of Bior himself, though it smells strongly of drink. Dim light filters into the room through a round window in the starboard wall. Cadell and Rodrico help the captain to his bed, where he sits with a grunt. Rodrico then begins to peel back the torn fabric soaked in blood and stuck to Bior's wounds. Cadell has a moment to look around, seeing a desk with a nautical chart on it, as one might expect, and all manner of bottles holding various levels of hard liquor by the looks of them. Perhaps surprisingly, the only thing more plentiful than the bottles are the numerous books that line shelves built into the walls of the chamber.

And now the faithless one needs healing.

For a fleeting fraction of time, I desire to ignore his needs. It's weakness, my sinful inclination. And I will fight the weakness.

He's fast. Maybe if I charge him--

Now is not the time to be reckless. Just slay the creature--he fears you!

What would I do without you, Nissa?

You would charge.

That's not what I--oh, never mind.

I strike the big fish.
