Dragon's Egg - Act I

I let the corpse slide off my blade.

Oh, Baldhart. Your dress is ruined!

Nissa's right, but I liked the mauve outfit better anyway.

I use fabric from the still-bloodless portion of my now-more-red-than-puce dress to wipe down my hilt so it won't fly overboard if I swing and miss.

I ascend the stairs, but remain close to the knight. I will not rush three enemies.

I look the big one in the eye. I know I must look intimidating. "I am painted with the blood of your kind, demon! But you… I will feast on your soul!"

((BARBARIAN SKILL: INTIMIDATE))

Dark Lord
Empowered by Betula, I glance toward the barbarian and elf. They seem to have things well in hand. The human beside me has run off, and the archer on the other side has taken down one of the creatures with his arrows.

Seeing Bior and Rodrico struggle, I rush to their aid. Approaching the struggle, I raise my sword high, aiming for the head.

((Cadell appears to be missing from that diagram. I was afraid he might have been thrown overboard! XD I wonder if he can swim...))

As the monster falls to my arrows and the shiphand's knife, I look to him and smile briefly in acknowledgement of his bravery before turning to seek out my next foe.

((Bit hard for me to move or fight if I don't know where I am, sorry!))

((Fixed!))

A moment of shocked appreciation enthralls me as I watch Baldhart skewer and lift a fish demon. The odd consideration of what such fish demons would taste like fluttered in my mind then vanished. I scold myself for my rash decision in using a melee weapon instead of the longbow across my back. I switched to my weapon of choice and loose an arrow at the fish demon engaged with a deck hand across from me.

Damage (in the slim chance I hit. The last +! is for humanoid damage. These are humanoid, right?)

I stay at the knight's side hoping I can assist him with his opponent...
I attack the nearest opponent...

TO HIT:
embed?2865456.jpg

...but my thrust does not reach.

I keep a white-knuckle grip on my weapon to ensure it will not slip from my hands.

CHALLENGE ROLL (not sure if it was necessary):
embed?2865478.jpg

((Note: I doubt I'll be able to roll at work, so that's why I'm keeping close to the knight and rolling my attack.

EDIT - In case my "intimidate" skill ended my turn, please consider this post to be my next turn. In either case, I'm trying to help the knight pick off the nearest minion.))

EDIT 2 - Edited to reflect current positions of enemies.

Looking about for another fish-demon to slay, I spy Bior and Rodrico facing one of the monsters. I keep my distance, but aim an arrow at the monster and let fly -- hoping all the time that I do not wound the captain or Rodrico with friendly fire.

Baldhart makes it to the top of the stairs just in time to see the end of the fish demon leader's challenge to Matthew. She makes her bold statement, staring the fish-eyed creature down.

((The Fish Demon Leader Missed his save versus Intimidation. I have too many images in this post so I won't provide the picture of the roll here)).

Cadell fires an arrow at the fish demon menacing Bior and Rodrico. The arrow catches the creature in the thigh, though it turns fortuitously just before the moment of impact, rendering the damage less than it might have been. Still, the arrow juts from its scaly skin.

Rydh notes Cadell's arrow passing just in front of him seconds before he himself reaches the fish demon. He lifts his sword high and strikes at the creatures head...only to just miss his target. The tip of the creature's pointed ear is shaved off, though no real damage is done.

Ankari fires across deck at the fish demon who was battling the poor ship's hand, who is bleeding profusely from the shoulder. The arrow thuds into the timber just beside the creature, but the fish man is motionless, clawed hands wrapped around the arrows the protrude from its chest. The ship's hand falls to a sitting position, back against the wall of the fo'c'sle, groaning.

Matthew attacks with his spear, thrusting it at the feasting fish man as the creature is in mid turn. The creature manages to get an arm up in time to intercept the blow meant for its torso, but the tip of Matthew's spear cuts to the thing's bone and traces a deep furrow up toward its shoulder. The wound steams and blood streaks down the creature's arm. But the fish demon Matthew completes it turn, swiping with one taloned hand as it turns to face the knight.

((Fish Demon's Attack)):

embed?2872965.jpg

The fish demon's talons scrape harmlessly across Matthew's chain shirt, and the thing lets out a hiss of frustration.

The leader of the fish demons closes with Matthew as well, either making good on its earlier challenge or avoiding the fearsome sight of the Barbarian. Perhaps a bit of both. It jabs with its trident, its attack coming on the heels of the slash by its comrade.

((Fish Demons Leader's Attack)):

embed?2872988.jpg

The attack is of no use, however, as Matthew effortlessly knocks the blow aside with the shaft of his spear.

The third fish demon on the fo'c'sle races toward Baldhart, its strange stone knife held on high.

The young ship's hand on the quarterdeck continues to watch the proceedings with gape-mouthed fascination and horror.

Bior continues scrambling backward across the deck, one hand clamped across the shredded flesh of his arm, blood seeping between his fingers. Rodrico swipes at the fish man again with his hook, but the blow misses. The creature doesn't even notice it, its attention turned now to Rydh, whose blade just whistled past its head, severing the tip of an ear. With teeth still thick with Bior's blood, the creature snaps its powerful jaws forward in an attempt to bite the Cleric.

((Regular Fish Demon's Attack on Rydh)):

embed?2873012.jpg

The attack is on target, the creature's teeth poised to sink into the Cleric's flesh. Then, just as the gaping maw closes, the faint energy that surrounds Rydh shimmers and crackles and the closing mouth of the fish demon slides harmlessly to one side.

In the instant that the fish's toothy jaws slip from my armor, I know. This day is not my day to die.

Matthew's spear pierces the abdomen of the fish demon that has now turned to fully face him. The creature lets out a hissing shriek of pain and its knees buckle momentarily. Then, gathering its strength, it lashes out again with its razored claw:

embed?2881958.jpg

Matthew uses his shield to deflect the clawed arm of the fish demon upward as the creature's attack passes just inches from his flesh. The fish demon leader, too, attacks Matthew once again, still feeling shaken by the force of Baldhart's words:

embed?2881975.jpg

This attack is also parried by Matthew, the cold steel of the trident ringing against his shield.

Baldhart attacks the rushing fish demon with her two-handed sword, but the fish demon closes the gap more quickly than she anticipated, and is able to side-step the attack. With a snort and a clack of its terrible jaw, it slashes at Baldhart with its strange stone knife:

((Fish Demon's Damage)):

embed?2882033.jpg

The failure to anticipate the attack proves costly, as the fish demons's knife punches through Baldhart's leathers and digs into her gut. For a moment, she experiences a shortness of breath. Then the searing pain comes. The fish demons' knife glistens with her blood, and Baldhart imagines that the foul creature's mouth turns up slightly in a wicked grin, if indeed fish demons are capable of such. Once the shock of the attack fades, Baldhart finds that she is still in the game even though her wound is deep.

Ankari gains the fo'c'sle, though his attack misses again. Whether due to an ill wind blowing over the ship, or the tossing of the waves, or sheer bad luck, it is unlike him to miss. Perhaps some providence shines on these foul creatures?

Rydh swings his sword at the fish demon before him, a strong blow coming just as Cadell, moving swiftly south along the deck, looses an arrow through the space between the stairs and the deck. Both attacks hit, Rydh's powerful blow spinning the fish demon where it stands and causing it to stumble, one bony hand pressed against the deck as it goes to its knees. No sooner does it fall into this crouch than Cadell's arrow punches through its temple, spattering blood, flesh, and bits of bone. With a strange, wet sigh the creatures falls lifeless to the deck.

Bior still has one hand clamped over his wounded shoulder, and as the fish demon falls, Rodrico rushes to the aid of his Captain, kneeling beside him and attending his wounds. Two ship's hands have finally descended the rigging and are gathered around the boy who was the subject of the first fish demon's attack, checking for signs of life. The ship's hand on the quarterdeck seems to have gained his senses as well, rushing down the stairs toward the others.

I curse the my inability to focus and strike true. Perhaps it has something to do with Baldhart's severe wound. Or the fact that so many people are pressed around me and I'm suffering from performance anxiety. I breath in deep, remembering the words of my mentor, and release again.

((Phietadix - just to clarify...you have two shields. I assume one of them is on your back or something, since you can't hold both. You won't be able to get that shield off and throw it to Baldhart if you want to do anything else this round. You could toss Baldhart the shield you are holding, but it would be next round before you can get the second one out, which means you'll be shield less for one round, assuming you want to attack this round. If you don't attack this round you can both throw your shield to Baldhart and get your second shield ready :) )).
