Ch.3: "Silver Tide" / Nyse Lagoon

Rose, Susan and Violet fire arrows at distant spiders. Taking the time to aim as Artemis taught them allows the to hit spiders from very far—much further than a boomerang or web could possibly reach. But it takes a few arrows to kill a spider, and Susan and Violet can only fire one arrow at a time.

Rose is able to hold a little longer, then fire two arrows in rapid succession. The arrows seem to do more damage, just enough so it's worth the extra time taken to do her trick shot.

Still, there are hundreds of spiders. A dozen arrows might kill 3 to 5 of them. They'll have more than half their number left, and likely there will be too many webs for a couple of icy swords to defend against.

Sigrlinn

Sigrlinn remembers the way her Warning Shot impeded the masked mooks on the volcano, and aims her hand cannon at the spiders below. She waits for the right moment to fire, knowing she has to make the shot count. Better if they're all or mostly converged in one spot, but not yet ready to attack.

Rose says, "That may come in handy later, if you're waiting for all the spiders to be over our heads. In the mean time, I really think your magical arrows might be more effective than my Robin Hood trick."

Sapphire says, "I keep saying I can combine fire with magic arrows, but nobody seems to listen."

"I'm listening," Violet says. "But I keep saying your fairy hands are the only hands that can apply ointment on a fairy without breaking her little fairy limbs. So somebody else can combine magic with arrows. Not. You."

"Yeah but, it would just be a sec—"

"Your wingless friend can't afford a second! Not! You!"

Violet gets a kill shot on a spider as she says that.

Sigrlinn

Sigrlinn reluctantly sets her hand cannon aside and aims her bow again. She holds the shot, wanting to make it count.

As Sigrlinn holds her shot, her arrow starts to glow brightly. It divides until it becomes four arrows...

((Ireth, if you roll higher than 4, which is what I rolled, I'll go with your roll. If you roll a 2 or 3, I won't count your roll since mine's better. You can fire 4+ arrows, or wait for Kell to cast something...))

The other nymphs aim their arrows, but hold their fire. "Wait for the Huntress," Rose says.

Sapphire watches Kell expectantly...

"Oh...!" Sapphire says, "That must be the spell that made the ice swords. Combining two slow spells should be powerful. And I have spell that can--"

Violet glares at Sapphire. "You really shouldn't cast yet. Think of your friend."

"I know. My spell can wait. But you should take your own advice and think of your friends. They really shouldn't row yet."

Lily takes the hint. She puts away her oar and starts aiming her bow. Ivy and Heather do the same. "Wait for us," Heather says.

((If Kell casts Blades of Ice, I'll assume she holds the charge until all nymphs are ready to fire, and that Sigrlinn waits for Kell to cast.))

Sigrlinn

As soon as Kell is done casting, Sigrlinn releases her arrows toward the spiders, and visualizes her targets freezing so they can't sling webs toward the boat.

"Nymphs, loose. Now!"

Sigrlinn fires ten arrows at once, all of which are enchanted with Kell's fully-charged ice spell--

--something else happens. Kell and Sapphire notice that it happens the moment the spells combine: there is an icy aura around the nymphs' bows. When they each fire a single arrow, each arrow divides into multiple projectiles. Heather only fires three icy shots. Rose shoots two arrows, and both become eight arrows headed for eight targets. Ivy seems to have bounced back from her near death experience. She fires three arrows, and all three become more than a dozen arrows!

Ivy alone hits 39 spiders, freezing all on impact. With Sigrlinn's arrows and those of the other nymphs, over eighty spiders are now encased in ice!

The spiders are closing in in horseshoe formation, but now about twenty percent of them are frozen solid. Our heroines can try to wipe them all out before they get too close, or they can speed up the moon boat.

Situation: >300 spiders--half to the left, half to the right. They are far enough that you can repeatedly fire, but you won't be able to cast such a slow spell once in web range.

* You can try to kill them all anyway.
* Or you can speed up the boat and get away.
* The nymphs are likely going to go along with whatever choice you make. They're pretty impressed, and Ivy is especially satisfied with the result.

Sigrlinn

Sigrlinn whistles in astonishment as her and Kell's combined magic does more than she anticipated -- much more! Seeing that a fifth or so of the spiders are frozen, but the rest are still mobile, she looks at her companions.

"I think it's time we sped on out of here, don't you?"

The nymphs agree, though Lily seems reluctant to lower her bow. All but Violet trade bows for oars, while Violet gently cups her hands around the fairies.

"What're you doing?" Sapphire asks.

Violet replies, "Making sure you don't fly out. Didn't you see how powerful their magic is?"

Susan says, "Artemis blessing our bows helped. You think she blessed the oars too?"

Rose says, "Let's hope not. I have a feeling that Valkyrie Ride will be crazy by itself." She asks Kell, "Will you two put your magic together again?"

Kell tells the nymphs, "Unless Sigrlinn feels strongly otherwise, I say aim again and let's take out as many spiders as possible before they get into web range."

Rose says, "Either way works for us, as long as you two agree. We can only shoot that effectively if you two combine spells, and I imagine we'll need your combined magic to get away fast enough."

Sigrlinn nods and readies her bow again. "Then let's keep shooting. Kell, I'll hold my shot until you cast."

((Ireth, go ahead and roll three heaven's arrow attacks. I'll post later under the assumption that each attack is full charge, coordinated with fully charged blades of ice.))

Our heroines come to a quick agreement. In just under a minute, they are able to combine their magic. For all the trouble they had taking out one spider, the huntress and nymphs do quite well against an army.

On the first volley of arrows, Lily manages to shoot twice, freezing two dozen spiders. Everyone else averages about eight arrows.

On the second volley, Sigrlinn fires twelve arrows and, immediately, another twelve fan out in her hand. She hits twenty-four spiders, and Violet does the same.

On the third volley, Rose shoots forty-eight arrows but hits twenty-four targets. Lily hits a couple dozen herself. Sigrlinn only fires four arrows, but on the upside, there are no unfrozen targets on her left. There are about a hundred or so unfrozen spiders on the right. Judging by the distance, it will take half a minute for them to converge above the boat. The ones that were hit the first time the spell was cast are starting to thaw, but they're not very lively...

SITUATION:
Left = > 150 frozen spiders
Far ahead = > 80 thawing spiders
Right = > 100 approaching spiders + ~50 frozen spiders

((A lot of 12's were rolled, including Ireth's second roll! If everyone rolled average (7 for Sig, 8 for Arty's nymphs), you'd have barely cleared one side. Combo rolls gave you over 200 hits!))

Kell asks, "Are we ready to speed out of here now, or do we want to try one more volley?"

Sigrlinn crosses to the right side of the boat, aiming another arrow. "I think we should, just to be safe. Ready when you are."
