Yeah, you caught me on the names not matching up. I kind of named the mountains based on the two things they were full of. Snow and iron ore(steel). Honestly I'm pretty bad at naming things like mountains and rivers and such, so I tend to go with the first original idea that strikes, even if it doesn't match up linguistically.

In your shoes I would make up a word for snow and a word for steel and throw them together. As long as it sounds similar its all good and considering the amount of variation we have in english .. ;)

Something I've done a number of times, is take a word and switch letters out in a way that still makes pronouncible sense and there you have it a new word for... snow or whatever.

If no one minds, might I be able to take the scattered group of islands in the east? (In response to your earlier question, I am terrible at art.)

@Donny Bruso

did you have an idea on what the scale of the map is? From the southernest point of the big island to the northernmost point on my island is it 1,000mi, 10,000mi? or rather what latitudes would each island correspond to on earth. just trying to figure out what the climate is going to be like.

The equator runs horizontally through the map at the lowest point in the northern coastline of the largest island. That little dip in the center of the island marks the equator

Okay, since a couple people expressed interest for reviving this project over in the Shared Worlds thread I have decided that it we are going to do it, we need some ground rules.

1- Any member of Mythic Scribes is able to contribute as much or as little as they wish.

2- In order for there to be a minimum of contradictions, each island will have an "editor-in-chief" (the big Island should have two as there is room for two civilizations) to maintain internal consistency. This "editor" will be the first to show interest in the island (i.e. I would be editor for the northernmost island) as they will have created the basics for that culture.

3- Before writing a story set in this world (I'm going to call it the Mythic Archipelago cause its a group of islands and we are Mythic Scribes, if you have a better idea please say so) it is necessary to contribute to the World-Building in some manner.

4- To be fair to all involved, no one member should seek to have a piece set in the Mythic Archipelago be published for money. The writing of stories, and the World-building itself, should be considered as an exercise.

I will be contacting the members that post claims on islands to see if they are still interested. Also there is a map on the first page of this thread. If anyone else has any suggestions please say, also if you have any questions about the rules tell me. I have a bit of a cold at the moment and so I'm taking cold medicine that can sometimes make me loopy, so while the rules might make sense to me they might not to normal people.

I would like to contribute in some way. If the island map is still in effect. What would an Editor-in-Chief of a nation have to do? I have yet to do any cultural creations for world building. I'm interested in that tiny nation just North of the big island. I don't know if someone has claimed it or not, but I'd like to contribute to that one. Maybe I could just be an Idea Spewer for the world?

I'm still working here and there on bits for the eastern nation of the biggest island [admittedly I've set what I've done so far in more of an industrial setting, but that can change depending on other people haha], So thats what I'm laying claim to, friends.

Who ever wants to take western big island, I suggest we either split it right down the middle or we do everything outside of the desert first then perhaps collaborate on some desert dwellers. When I saw that desert I knew it had to have something like that. It wouldn't technically be three nations though, but more like the eastern and western nations, with some stragglers hanging around in the middle!

@ Kaellpae: I can't remember anyone claiming it, but then again its been awhile since I read this thread haha. "Editor-in-chief" would mean that you have say on the creation of that nation. While other people can contribute bits and pieces to where ever they like, the Editor of that area can veto things, or not, so as to maintain cultural, physical, geographic, etc. consistency.

Kaellpae, JC explained it exactly how I envisioned it. My reasoning was that since they would be the first to have ideas about that culture they should have an influence on how it evolves. If they so choose they could step aside and appoint a new editor.

So far these are the Editors

Island NE of Big Island - Donny Bruso
Island SE of Big Island - Mythos
Big Island East - JCFarnham
Northernmost Island - myrddin173
Island Group to the East - j.c
Tiny Island N of Big Island - Kaelpae

This leaves

Big Island West (should be willing to work with JCFarnham)
Central Island
Island NW of Big Island
Island NW of Central Island

I will be sending PM's to Mythos, Donny Bruso, and j.c if they don't respond by next friday those islands will be reopened.

Well, I'll try my hand at it. Is there a boundary as to the people/creatures/fauna that can be included in this overview?

I have two ideas that could be quite fun for that small of an island. I'll write up some rough descriptions later if I get to a computer. Otherwise I'll have to do a short and rough overview on my phone. I might even just mesh the two ideas to make it the best of both ideas.

The following is very rough jist of my ideas for my island.

The name of the island/nation is Eness; the people are called the Enessi. They worship a deity they call the "Supreme Being," a goddess of reason, by using reason in everything they do. As a result they, as a whole, are regarded the most level-headed of all peoples. The Enessi also prefer to be kept neutral in affairs between Islands (like Switzerland). There obsession with reason has led to the stereotype/insult(?) "cold as an Enessi" because of the belief that they are "cold-fish" (and it's quite cold there too!).

Also there is a radical group that believes the the Enessi are the Supreme Being's chosen people and should rise up and conquer the other islands. It is a stark minority, the rest refuse to have any dealings with known members.

You know this map has been staring me in the face for months every time I sit at my computer. The original sits right in front of my keyboard as a reminder to write, but to be honest after interest on the forums seemed to die off, that's about all it's done is sit there and collect dust. Good to see people are getting together on it again. I'll go dredge my working file for it off the bottom of my thumb drive and see if I can't come up with something interesting for my part.

If one inch makes 200 miles how big is that small one of mine? I have yet to see the map anywhere but my phone and that doesn't give me the actual size of the map.
