Using an idea in a novel and in a fanfic

To put it simply, is it possible to use an idea in a fanfiction story and use it in a novel? It feels kind of wrong to me

I do it often, so it's certainly possible. Though some details will obviously change from one story to the next.

If it's your idea - not something from the source material - there is absolutely no reason why not. In fact, even if it's an idea from the source material, one idea - repackaged with a lot of new context and material - should give you a new and interesting story.

Really, the only question is: do you want to write that idea twice? Often I find if I've used an idea once, I'm done exploring it. But some ideas are big and chewy enough that I can explore them over and over again with different nuance.
