((Well, if both cannons are ready to fire, then let's make it a Fireflower (which, IIRC, would light both at once). If not, make it a sparkler.))

((Sparkler it is… Cookie needs to reload on this turn. Also, thanks for clarifying you'd have lit Fire Flower in the air, and not on the fuse. Had you lit the wick with that spell, the Cap'n would have been singed by the spell and so would the powder keg next to him, which would be significantly damaging. He'd have been down to 3 HP (3/4 of a heart) and I was thinking I'd have Ender escort him to the helm.

Fortunately, that didn't happen!

Also, if you do use Fire Flower or Grand Finale in the air or unspecified location, I'll assume Vincent cast the spell in the right spot so the disastrous scenario above won't happen. It was "aiming the fire at the fuse of the cannon" that would have made Fire Flower problematic.))

Reaver, Shan Mai and the Pale Jackal beat the last frog man down. Diana stands in the light, daring the next pair of glowing eyes to meet her blade.

Ender and Vincent head out with cannon balls, and Vincent lights the Cap'n's cannon. Cap'n Bob groans, "My aim's off." He has time to aim the cannon in the proper position.

Cookie's shot tears through a sail and penetrates the hull. As for Cookie himself, he can safely reload his cannon.

"What's this?" a man's voice calls out. "Cannons on a cruise ship?" He's not laughing this time, but his tone is of mock indignation as if everything he encounters is some kind of joke. "I guess my prize won't be won so easily. Well a few holes in The Frog Prince of Darkness won't scare my crew." He laughs out loud, "Ho! Ho! Ho!"

Beatrice stands by Vincent and tells him, "I'm not scared either." She looks at the moon. Something she sees gives her hope. Vincent glances in the same direction and he blinks. Whatever he may or may not have just seen, after he blinks his eyes the mysterious silhouette is gone.

Vincent

At Beatrice's quiet declaration, I smile and lay a hand on her shoulder. I'm glad I chose to protect her; she has the makings of a fine warrior like Diana or Ariel, or perhaps a mentalist like myself. I look out toward the moon, then blink in surprise. I can't be sure what I glimpsed, but it fills me with hope. I wonder if it really was what I imagine it was...

((Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!))

After wiping the dead frog-man's blood from the blade of my katana natana, I return it to its scabbard only to find to my utter surprise that the lacquered Tigerwood had been replaced by a sheath made of a soft, red and white pelt-like material.

A bright ethereal glow emanates from within the scabbard and the more I stare at it, strong feelings of goodwill and cheer wash over me like a warm unyielding breeze.

I can't help smiling broadly and laughing heartily. Whatever great and powerful magic this is, I don't want it to end.
((MERRY CHRISTMAS!!))

Beatrice's thoughts enter my mind again, eliciting a small smile. This girl is an enigma, no doubt about that. Not a warrior, hm? What do you see yourself becoming?

Diana

I look all around the room, wondering if all our enemies are dead yet. No more eyes are visible in the darkness now, at least as far as I can see. I clean and sheathe my sword, backing toward my husband, wondering if things are going better on deck.

I look at the other samurai and greet him with the customary fist in open palm followed by a quick bow.
"Well met, stranger. I am Reaver, former Knight General of Ashterah. It's good to have another warrior on board. I'm sure that you already know that we cannot rest until that pirate ship is neutralized and its master lies dead at our feet."

SeverinR

Valar Lord
"Good to meet you also." Slipping the cleaned Katana into the scabard. "A wager perhaps on which Samurai takes the captains head? Say a gentlemans bet or maybe a jack to the one who removes the captains head? Didn't I hear you're a betting man?"

I grab the handle of my katana natana and reply: "I hope that your referring to the captain of that pirate ship and not Captain Bob. That will never happen. If you're referring to taking the head of the master of our foe, I believe that my friend Pale Jackal is more of a gambler than I, so better to make a bet with him. If either of you wish to claim his head as a trophy, I will do my best to assist you."

"Did someone say bet?" My ears perk up. "How about whoever ices the captain gets all the booty on their ship? What say ye? Ugh, why am I talking like a pirate. I'm a brawler. Get it right, PJ."

There is a calmness in the dark room, and outside. All that is heard is the flickering of the fuse. Cap'n Bob takes the time to reposition his cannon, timing his movement with the rocking of the boat. By the time his cannon fires, his shot is almost dead center. "Ha!"

Whatever proud words he's about to say are cut off. BOOM. BOOM.

As if the two shots are a signal, to frogs leap from the water and onto the stern. One makes a half-hearted swing at Cookie, but he only strikes his rolling pin. The other staggers back after stepping on broken floorboards.

In the dark room, conversation is interrupted by a red glow. First, all that is seen are red pairs of eyes. Then eight spears are thrust at once.

[1] Beatrice stands perfectly still. A small whimper is heard as a spear whizzes past her unblemished throat.

[19] Ender takes a blow to the gut. He growls as his hands move to grab the enemy's spear…

[11,10] Reaver is attacked twice from behind… ((Reaver, you can opt to roll the die to avoid some damage.))
Reaver, you can use Ukenegashi to deflect your opponent's attack. If you roll a 12 or better, the 11 won't hit. If you roll an 11 I'll let you use it against the second attack if you'd like.

If an attack is deflected, I'll adjust your health accordingly. Right now, your health is displayed as if both attacks hit.

[2, 9] Diana is double-teamed as well. The one in front of her strikes her shield. The one behind tries to take advantage of the distraction, but he almost leans into her blade. He freezes up, and the shaft of his spear lightly brushes Diana's ponytail.

[11] PJ is hit in the chest.

[9] Another frog finds Shan Mai's back, but his attack is weak.

Red eyes glow in the darkness before me. I instinctively pull Beatrice behind me, then call on my magic again. Time for more fireworks!

"Who's in the mood for fried frog's legs?" I laugh as the spell blazes forth.

((I'm hoping there's a way to maximize enemy damage while minimizing friendly fire [no pun intended], while keeping the spell as strong as possible. Hopefully those three frogs behind Diana will get more damage than she does. Not sure about Mr. Ender, but if Beatrice stays out of the way I think she should be fine. For the moment.))

Diana is beset from both sides. If I can clear a path through the room, I can help her... But what about Beatrice? Brave as she is, I doubt she can stand much damage from these monsters.

Diana

The frog in front of me strikes, his spear glancing harmlessly off of my shield. But another brushes my hair from behind. I whirl around, sweeping my blade in a wide semicircle. That's too close for comfort!

Not good! Not good! I will myself not to panic. The tough meat will help me... but my back is still exposed, and a blow that strikes true will still hurt!

We are once again besieged by frogmen... But these seem different... They are larger, more fearsome... Almost hell-spawned. I respond to their vicious attack with the Ukenegashi.

My style feels sluggish and ineffectual. Perhaps my enemy's attacks have affected me more than I realized.

Reaver sees he is too slow to deflect the attack from behind, yet he is unharmed by the first strike. A green glow emanates outside. The light is split and reflected by the silver katana, and Reaver sees wreaths of the mysterious light surrounding those he intends to protect.

Even as Reaver feels the spear of his second attacker, no one else in the room is harmed. Green lights go out each time a frogman strikes his target. Diana, Vincent and Beatrice were never hit. Their wreaths continue to bathe them in the protective light.

And Reaver continues his attack…

((Reaver, you can roll again for the player turn.))

Because Reaver's Christmas Bonus was used during the GM turn, successful strikes from the enemy hit the magic shields. Characters who lack shields used them—note everyone's health is the same as the previous turn, except for Reaver, who was hit twice but now only suffers damage from one attack.

Whatever this ethereal glow is, I feel an energy I've not felt since experiencing the effects of faerie magic many years ago on Roku Roku. As I lash out at my enemy with my katana natana, I offer a silent prayer of thanks to The Warrior and shout:
"Thank you Bouldergut, you magnificent bastard!"

Three cannon balls hit opposing ships. The Cap'n's shot penetrates the hull of The Frog Prince of Darkness. The enemy ends up killing one of his own. [(4) 15] The frog man opposing cookie bursts before his eyes. As for the other shot, it was fired high, but not high enough. [(13,-4) 5] The shot hits the ship, but fails to penetrate the upper deck, which has already been evacuated. Perhaps Diana would've heard the thump above her head, if not for the chaos around her.

Vincent casts Fire Flower at the backs of the three frogs nearest his wife. He singes them as well as Ender's opponent. Though the red-eyed frogs suffer minimal damage, they apparently have a very low pain threshold. The frogs cry out in a shrill voice, seemingly confirming Reaver's suspicion that these beasts are spawned from hell.

Minimal = 1 HP, a.k.a. ¼ of a heart.

Grand Finale would hit multiple times and Nuke should only be used for DISTANT targets. If you aim Nuke at anything on the tiles, you'll hit every player for 16 HP, a.k.a. 4 hearts. Don't do that!

The one near Diana panics. As she swings around to strike him, he dodges, but crashes into the small stack of powder kegs. A stopper is jarred loose as the keg slams into the ground and rolls across the deck. The Fire Flower lights the line of powder which burns in both directions in a flash. One keg rockets through the port side wall; those at the bottom of the stack burst and send the remaining keg in Ender's direction—but the keg bursts mid-flight between whatever's left of the four once-merely-singed frogs. They burst as well.

Diana's magic shield holds out long enough to protect her from the devastating blast. The corpse behind her is a skeletal crisp. Some kegs in the remaining stacks are singed as well, but miraculously, they are not set off despite the many bursts of flame.

Reaver's attack is in perfect from. He is not at all distracted by the fire and chaos. Confident in his strike, he aims where his opponent stands as the Fire Flower spell is first cast. By the time his sword strikes, it's impossible to discern whether the frog died by the sword or from a flying, exploding keg. What Reaver may have noticed is the green beam released from his sword. It cuts through fire, through light, and what else it cuts through is a vision Reaver cannot see through his own eyes.

In his mind, he sees a view of Beatrice's assailant close up. The frog's head is cleaved in two at the jaw. A geyser of frog blood paints the ceiling. The vision pivots past Vincent, observing the beam shooting through the frog, out the opening to the stern. The enemy ship is hit by the beam, its sail erupting into flame!

Reaver again sees through his own eyes. Directing his sight away from the flame, he sees his sword and scabbard are back to normal. Though he feels the heat of the flames shooting past him, he is unharmed.

Pale Jackal announces the name of his combo. His first punch sends his opponent through a window. Unfazed by the inconvenience, he continues his rapid flurry of jabs, striking Shan Mai's opponent. The final blow, like the first, sends a frog through a window. Four frog legs twitch as shards of glass bite into the large heads of the two dying frogs.

This leaves Shan Mai only one opponent to choose from: Diana's. He rushes to her aid, drawing his blade. [13] The horizontal strike is enough to drop the frog man. The overhead strike splits his skull open.

[19] Cap'n Bob climbs onto his cannon. In mid-air, the little man shouts, "Get the hell offa MY ship!" He jumps on the frog several times, until the frog man coughs up whatever it is that giant, mutated frogs eat.

With no frogs to concern himself with, Cookie is free to aim his cannon at the enemy ship.

Ender drops the broken spear tip clutched in his hands, then thrusts both hands in his pockets. "Looks like you guys got this under control," he says with a shrug.

((Since Rolz is down—and so are all of the frogs thanks to natural 20s and timely use of magic!—feel free to RP a bit. I'll give Rolz until the weekend to start up again. On Monday, expect turn-based action with 3 GM turns on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.))

I should have expected something like this to happen, but the heat of the moment drove the risk from my mind. As the room resounds with explosions, half of my mind is consumed with one thought -- Oops! The other screams No! I can barely see Diana through the fire and smoke, and the bizarre green light. But soon cold air from the broken portholes starts to clear the smoke from the room, and lessen the lingering heat. Now I can see her, looking shaken but unharmed. Thank the gods!

Note to self -- don't do that again! Should I apologize? No one seems to be hurt by the blast except the frogs, which is what I wanted in the first place.

Diana

Fiery light, smoke, and the smells of burning flesh and powder fill the room with startling force. Amazingly, my enemies fall, but I am unharmed. Coughing, I look at the samurai who stands at my side, then at the dead frog at his feet. I smile and dip my head in thanks, then seek out Vincent through the dispersing smoke and hurry to his side. We cling to each other for a moment in relief, and then I look to Beatrice. Is she alright?

Beatrice waves the smoke away and gives Diana a hug. She looks at Vincent and says, "I guess your fireworks are good for more than just a show." She clams up suddenly as the Cap'n stands in the doorway.

"What happened here? Anyone hurt?"

"Naw," Ender says. "A stack of kegs was hit by cannon fire. They only managed to kill their own."

"Uh-huh." The Cap'n looks suspicious, but shrugs. "There's a lot of dead frogs in here, and this little girl is… well… glowing, but… unharmed I guess. Looks like I hired the right guards. And cooks. And, uh, magician. And barkeep. So I'll hear from you before I get back to the helm.

"We can stay the current course and eventually get away from the ship behind us. It's just a couple holes in the sail. They'll get a few more shots off if there's any fight in that captain, but I think we slowed 'em enough that we can get away.

"Another option is to let them catch up to us. Cookie fires some shots into the hull. It the ship don't sink, we board her! Or… him, if it's called the Prince of Darkness."
