((You need to roll 1d20.

10 or better = it works;
9 or less = fail.

You can normally opt to charge magic when you fail, but there's a risk if you roll lower the next time. Since Vincent wants to be subtle, it's better to just stop the telepathy if the magic is too weak. Nothing will happen; no one will notice.

If you DO roll a second time, fatty and others have time to react before the second "turn" can happen.))

The fat man is oblivious to what Vincent tried to do, but he agrees to stay for the magic show. "After that, we go to the room," he says. Beatrice sits next to him reluctantly, her clenched fists on her lap tightly gripping her skirt.

The lovely tailor is a mermaid! However that doesn't explain why she was able to read my thoughts and hypnotize me. Surely there is some other form of sorcery at work here. I must meditate and hide my thoughts the way that my old friend Tusk taught me when confronted by demons.

Once I feel confident that my mind is protected, I say: "My favorite color is dark blue. Forgive me if I seem rude, but why are you on board this ship and not frolicking in the ocean's depths with the rest of your kind? Are you a prisoner here?"

Cookie frowned and scratched his beard at Z'no's comments. "Wine, Eh? Well, I be leaving the whinin' tae you, ye scurvy dog. If the Great Chef's brat wants to take a dip in that yurr fancy glass o' red, good fer her. Fact, I wouldn't mind havin' a bath in this yerr barrel o' grog, right Sherriff?"

Cookie gave Bart a slap on the back that nearly bowled him over as he set the barrel down. "Good on ye for bringin' that down," he said. "I was gettin' a mite thirsty..." Then Cookie took a mug from a cupboard and dipped it into the barrel. He downed the drink so fast one could think he'd been walking through a desert.

Having sated his need for grog, Cookie set about mixing up the ingredients for Crableg an' Eel Casserole. Hopefully some of the passengers would enjoy his work...

(OOC: LS, do I need to make a roll for cooking the dish?)

((Yeah, let's roll. It'll give me an idea about what the casino deck will be like when we start the action. You're roll determines the grog content:

1-9 = weak
10-15 = "normal"
16-19 = strong
20 = so strong that everyone is happily drunk and decides that grog is the new ketchup))

My first attempt having failed, I try again to knot up the fat man's shoelaces. If he gets angry, let it be at me and not the innocent Beatrice.

Still weak, but better than my last try -- just enough to succeed. I hope he doesn't notice.

Murmurs nearby catch my attention; I listen without looking. Four guards are discussing the scene, sounding concerned about whether or not I'm there (not that they need to be), and also about the fat man's motives. As they should be. I take a moment to recall my planned repertoire, glancing around at the others in the room. Perhaps some fireworks will do to start the show with a bang, so to speak.

Diana

I watch Beatrice and her "escort" with palpable unease, and carefully avert my gaze when the fat man's shoelaces twist themselves into a knot. No need to draw attention to that. Instead I look back at Vincent, resting my chin on my hand and smiling in anticipation of the start of his show.

By the time you get your spell to work as intended, the fat man is seated with his young escort. He is completely unaware of the spell, though others in the room noticed something—but they're not sure what. The crowd seems excited, and eyes begin to fix on Vincent.

The MC sees this and—though the sun has not completely set, he gets the attention of the crowd. He says, "Ladies and gentlemen… our evening star seated by his lovely wife…

Vincent the Magnificent!"

Daphne replies, "Me? A prisoner? No… not me. I nearly drowned on a ship much like this. The difference being that this ship still floats. The Voice spared me. I preyed to Her and I was spared. Just me. I don't know Her plan for me… or does a deity act simply out of kindness? I only know that She gave me this form, I sing well, and… I hear your voice even when you do not speak. I hear many unspoken words.

"Captain Bob allows me to work as a taylor on his ship. It's what I did in life… as a hobby back then." She says back then, but you can't imagine she's far into her twenties.

"I never considered there are others of my kind. Aww… I hope mermaids aren't like pixies. I don't know if I could take being an all-female race. How does that even work? Anyway, if mermaids frolic, these waters aren't good for frolicking. You have no idea what you don't see only a few fathoms beneath you. I like it here on the ship." She smiles. "Let me see if I can have your robe ready by the time we reach shore."

I smile as the announcer introduces me to the onlookers, and bow with a flourish as the audience applauds. "Thank you!"

I straighten up, shrugging off my coat and tossing it onto the chair behind me. To start the show, I focus my magic to call up some fireworks.

Oops -- not quite enough. I let the magic charge, hoping for a better result in a few moments.

The audience gazes up in anticipation as an aura surrounds Vincent.

1 = Lose Control
2+ = Charge
3+ = Sparkler
10+ = Fire Flower
16+ = Grand Finale
20 = Nuke

My thought is that you can choose a spell as long as you meet the required roll, and you can also choose to let magic case as long as you don't lose control. If you roll a 20, you can pick any of the spells. You won't be forced to create a huge, scary 'nuke' explosion. In fact, let's assume there's no ceiling, so the crowd can see a grand fireworks display if you roll a 16 or better.

While everyone's eyes are on Vincent, I take the chance to move and sit down on Beatrice's other side -- partly to see Vincent's magic from the front, and partly to be close to the girl if the fat man should try anything unseemly before they leave. I take a deep breath to keep calm at that thought, and watch Vincent in anticipation.

My magic bursts forth, sending up lights like flaming flowers. An opportune effect for the first go -- neither a feeble sparkler nor a potentially painful blast. I smile at the oohs and ahhs from the watchers, and keep an eye on the man still sitting next to Beatrice. I would not want to be him if he dares try anything while I'm around.

I bow humbly to Daphne. "Thank you. I shall return to your shop as soon as the ship drops anchor."

With that, I turn and leave the shop. Perhaps the casino deck will provide some entertainment.

Diana sits near Beatrice. Though she can't position herself between Beatrice and the fat man, she sits close to the girl. Her eyes light up as the shield maiden sets her weapons close by and sits to watch her husband perform.

Vincent's opening spell is a crowd-pleaser… but something's amiss. Vincent doesn't need to turn back. He gets the gist of what's happening through Diana's thoughts:

His Fire Flower spell revealed the silhouette of a soon-to-be passing ship.

Meanwhile, a bare-knuckle brawler wants to pay his compliments to the head chef. As the head chef had passed out from drinking too much, the man asks for the one truly responsible for preparing the meal. Shan Mai is sent out to the dining area.

((@Severin, since you haven't posted yet, I took the liberty of putting your samurai on the map.))

I smile and reach out to clasp Beatrice's hand, flattered by the way her eyes lit up when I sat near her.

The silhouette of a ship against the evening sky draws my attention. I watch it in confusion, and no small amount of dread. I can't tell what sort of vessel it is yet, nor if those aboard are friendly. I glance around at the rest of Vincent's audience, wondering if anyone else has seen what I have.

Vincent

As my spell lights up the sky, Diana's thoughts tell of something unexpected. I trust her to keep me informed of what's going on behind me, so I can keep the show going without distraction. Unless the inhabitants of the approaching ship prove to be hostile... that, then, is another story.

For the moment, I ready my magic for another round of fireworks.

Ah, beautiful -- more fire-flowers. The crowd seems to enjoy those.

((Alrighty, I'm off now. I'll try to get back in the game soon once I'm landed in TN. Until then, ciao!

Also, Vincent looks very much like his brother here, now that I see him in color. I think Dom was wearing green in the picture I sent to LS. Not that that's a bad thing!))

Let the Game Begin!

Upper Deck
Vincent uses his Sparkler spell to keep the attention on himself. But the distant BOOM is not from his spell. It's from the direction where the ship was seen a moment ago…

Casino Deck
map_02_b_b_oyster_turn_1_by_legendarysidekick-d6xb65x.png

With all the commotion going on in the bar room frequented by deck hands and other staff, the explosions outside blend in with the rest of the noise in the room.

Reaver is called in to check on a brawl, but the Cap'n tells him to relax. It's just Sashi and Jiro sparring. Sashi is armed with an oar, and Jiro is armed with a clothes rod. Reaver sees Sashi's tactic is to circle around—an apparent attempt to trick Jiro into facing the portal where the moon shines in. But before Sashi can position his opponent where he wants to, a bright pink fireworks display forces him to avert his eyes. Jiro smacks Sashi in the jaw with his clothes rod.

Pale Jackal was one of the deck hands asks to move the kegs. Once finished moving the kegs, he ended up with a ringside 'seat.' He was also invited to bet on the match.

Cookie was asked to see a diner about the meal. It turned out it was the captain himself!

Just go ahead and react to your surroundings.

Ireth, if you can post, great. Assume Vincent's performance is going well since the die rolls worked out for you. But you did hear a BOOM.

Severin, feel free to talk to the customer or react to the BOOM. You can choose to play it up as your character knows something is wrong or thinks it's part of the act.

Reaver, you did hear the boom from the window, but it sounded no louder than the crackle of fireworks. React as you think your character would. You haven't seen the ship, though. Just the pink flash of fireworks through the portal.

Phil, feel free to (retroactively) place a bet on the fight, or just watch.

Sparkie, feel free to roll the die, but it's optional. If you just want to RP with the captain before all hell breaks loose, that can work with or without a die roll.

"I was told a customer wanted to speak to..."The boom draws my attention, careful to monitor the customer for hostility, I look the direction of the boom. My hand rests on the katana on my hip, prepared for either customer or outside attraction.
"That did not sound like a simple pyrotechnic." I mumble,"My humble appologies, I must check on the noise. If I can I will be back as soon as I am able." I offer a quick bow{Watching the customer without looking at him(Peripheral vision) so as not to anger him.} and rush towards the ship railing.

As passengers enter and exit the casino deck, I'm able to ascertain that some sort of magic show is taking place up above. A bright pink flash of shimmering light followed by a low boom coming from outside the nearest porthole confirms this.

I've never been a fan of magicians. The whole lot of them are little more than charlatans out to make a quick jack. I turn my attention back to the bustling crowd, ready for the slightest hint of trouble.

Mr. Enter accepts the bet, and the two fighters begin their match. Sashi opens with a strong thrust to the gut, but Jiro counter attacks. The smell of soiled undergarments forces Sashi to take a step back. An oar slap slows Jiro's advance. The fighters circle. Distracted by a mysterious pink flash, Jiro delivers a blow to Sashi's jaw.

Sashi hits back much, much harder. He sees blood drip from Jiro's head. Dazed, Jiro swings his clothes rod wildly. A muffled boom is heard by some, but Jiro's attack missed.

GM: 1D2 => 1 #Initiative - first move - Sahsi 1 - Jiro 2 "Sashi opens with..."
GM: 1D20 => 16 #Sashi "...a strong thrust"
GM: 1D20 => 10 #Jiro "counter attack"
GM: 1D20 => 13 #Sashi "oar slap"
GM: 1D20 => 12 #Jiro "blow to...jaw"
GM: 1D20 => 20 #Sashi "much, much harder"
GM: 1D20 => 7 #Jiro "miss"

Mr. Ender says to PJ, "Well... I can't blame you for picking the underdog. I figured these fellas're evenly matched, and you'da tripled your money had it gone the other way." He sighs. "It ain't over, but... it's over. Lemme cut your losses. What're you drinking? It's on me, even if it's an expensive drink we don't normally offer the hired help."

Shan Mai steps over to the railing. The samurai's eye is sharp. He sees it--a thin black trail coarsing through the evening sky.

Everyone on the upper deck hears the pop. Splinters fly as a table is snapped by the cannon ball's landing. It isn't until after Beatrice shrieks that the passengers realize what is happening. The cannon went right through the man who accompanied the little girl! His body burst from the force of the cannon.

Beatrice realizes that she somehow made it unscathed. She looks at the fat man. Vincent isn't the only one who notices the girl's expression shows more pity than fear. Diana notices somethng else about the girl. Her eyes are fixed on the dead man's shoes. The laces are tied together.

On the casino deck, the Sashi-Jiro fight isn't even close. Already, gamblers are grumbling as they hand over coins.

Blue Lou notices something amiss. As he turns, the only girl in the room says to her boyfriend (or client), "Did we have tomato paste on our fried potatoes?" The man replies, "Nope." The couple looks up and sees the 'sauce' is dripping from the ceiling. There is a high pitched scream. The girl pats her frenzied lover (or client) on the back to calm him.

The Cap'n says to Cookie, "I meant to compliment you on this fine sea cuisine! A near perfect dish, ain't that right, Bart?" Bart grumbles, "It was near something, a'ight." Cap'n barks, "Ah! Order the basket o'fries next time if you cannot appreciate the finer things in life!" To Cookie, he goes on, "Time to put your rolling pin aside. Or not. In any case, I'll need you for something other than your culinary skills."

GM: 1D20 => 6
LOU: "Yarr, I can feel that eel squirming along me intestines!"

GM: 1D20 => 19
CAP'N: "Yarr! The only way this meal could be better is if I were to replace these oversized losers with voluptuous mermaids!"

GM: 1D20 => 2
BART: "Yarr, I now understand why there's a disease named after crabs! It's called 'crabs.' Yarr."

Mr. Ender says to Reaver and Pale Jackal, "Is that blood?" Looking at the two in the ring, he says, "I trust you two can put up more of a fight than the entertainment."

On both decks, there is a general murmur in the crowd. Most passengers are scared, confused, indecisive. Beatrice sees Diana instinctively arm herself as she rises. The child's fear is replaced by hope.
