Side One, Ep.1 "Holey Ship!"

Ruby

Dark Lord
Fenella

I stand precariously on top of the barrel and wave my enormous sword in the general direction of the enemy.

"Take that, you evil toad!"" I shout, clumsily swiping at the nearest and fattest slimy green monster. "And that!"

This time the sword slices into the toad's scaly head.

The toad is startled. He could not see me through the thick smoke, and topples over. He crashes into the two toads standing behind him and there is a domino effect as they land in a heap, slipping and slithering on their backs.

Now my new companions can move forward for the kill.

I laugh. "Hey, this is fun! I must say, I've disliked toads ever since my sister forced me to kiss one to see if it would turn into a handsome prince."

"And did it?" asks the muse, sitting on my shoulder.

"Of course not,"" I reply. "For then I should have had to marry him; but now I can see that killing toads is more my scene!"

Diana ♥♥♥♥ (enemy damage reduced)
Fenella ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Mariya ♥♥
Pale Jackal ♥♥♥♥♥
Reaver ♥♥♥♥ (damage increased)
Shan Mai ♥♥ (grappling power increased)
Vincent ♥♥♥♥ (offense increased)

Shan Mai and a toad lock arms, but Diana rushes in, slashing the toadie. He is almost toppled over by the strength of Diana's charge, and his counter attack is not even close [1]. With no opposition, Shan Mai is free to put his sword to use.

((@Severin, in case you didn't know you could roll again for the katana, I let the 7 count as both the grapple resistance for the GM turn and your attack roll for the player turn. If you object to your character drawing his sword, let me know, and I'll have the frog get back up.))

Fenella thinks the toads are fainting because of her, giving her the courage she needs to leap from a stack of barrels sword first. She talks to her tiny muse, who responds with a song that creates lightning. The princess takes Mariya's spell song to be a response and continues her conversation. As the ladies talk and sing, the frog in orange is struck twice in the head. First by lightning, then by the Singing Sword.

Reaver turns to the enemy who struck him in the back. His katana cuts deep. He remains surrounded, but both frogs only slap him with the shafts of their spears. Their attacks [5,5] are harmless. Pale Jackal's opponent is not so clumsy. As he rushes the charred frog, PJ finds he has impaled himself. [16] The frog pulls his spear from PJ's abdomen and ribbits with satisfaction. His expression changes when Vincent drops a barrel onto his head.

((LS, Diana's 18 was a sword-blow, not a shield-bash. The toad should be impaled, not just knocked away.))

My blade sinks deep into the toad, and its counterstrike misses me completely. I stab again, hoping my strength will last.

Two more frogmen are standing. I pick up another keg with telekinesis, pitching it at the one in dark yellow.

I wipe away blood from my mistimed charge. "You dirty frog. You will pay the price for wounding me. I've only been wounded one other time, I think. Wait, no. At least four times. Five? Never mind. You're going to die!"

I stomp my feet.

PJ and Vincent both kill their opponents, leaving Reaver with one unscathed enemy to deal with. Diana's opponent is badly wounded. Both glance at the ladder…

((Shan Mai, Reaver, Fenella and Mariya can still attack before the enemies can attempt an escape. Your targets are the blue-pantalooned frog and the toadie near Diana. Only Fenella and Reaver can strike the blue frog with melee. And of course, Mariya's magic can hit anyone. Anyone can hit the toad.))

The Pale Jackal's wild spin kick takes out the frog that wounded him., while Vincent pitches another barrel. The frog in yellow staggers back into a stack of kegs, which comes crashing down on top of his corpse. The two remaining frogs bolt. Diana and Reaver manage to wound them.

The frog in blue is too slow to get around the ladder. His ribs are shattered by Fenella's charge attack. The toadie bolts, and darts up the ladder. He is safely out of reach of any sword, but as he fumbles with the bulkhead, tiny Mariya stands on the princess' shoulder and sings…

((@Noma, yes you can charge. The toad can move 6 spaces and hop, but he still needs to open the exit to get away. If the blue guy had lived, he'd have opened the door and both would've escaped. A 1 is PERFECT for charging. Roll anything but a 1, and he's yours!))

Vincent

At the final thud of a body hitting the deck, I emerge from behind the stack of barrels. Some of our company are wounded, but all of the frog- and toadmen seem to be dead. Relief floods through me as I see that Diana is unharmed.

"Nicely done, all," I say as I move to Diana's side. "But somehow I doubt that's the last of them."

Diana

I smile as Vincent reaches me, then look around at those of our company who are wounded. I wonder if there are any stores of herbs aboard that I might use to tend the injured. Even if there are, I can't be sure I'll get the chance to find and use them before more enemies arrive.

A brilliant flash of lightning blasts the toad to smithereens. Mariya remembers this spell, which her mother said should be reserved for a force of evil: the Smitening Bolt. Several frog voices croak in unison when the toad is struck. When the smoke clears, all that remains is a smoldering pair of webbed feet on the ladder.

All but Diana hear several footsteps move hastily away from the bulkhead. Dust falls from a loud thump above PJ's head. More thumps are heard on the other side of the ladder. A man cackles, some frogs grumble… then all of the noises on the upper deck cease.

A burnt hand leaves the bulkhead propped open an inch, almost two at its widest point. There is much smoke rising from the smoldering ladder and bits of charred toadie, making it unlikely for one floor to spy on the other by peeking through the opening.

Diana wonders about herbs. She notices that Vincent had tossed several kegs of ale at enemies. However, the stack that toppled onto the frog in yellow did not release any kind of liquid, and two of those barrels are cracked. It is highly unlikely that there is any kind of liquid in those barrels. In addition, three stacks remain untouched: one by the ladder, one by the entryway, and one where Fenella once stood.

While I think, my gaze wanders over to the kegs that felled the frog in yellow. Some are cracked, but don't seem to hold liquid. I move closer to investigate, skirting around pools of blood and viscera from the remains of our enemies. The stink in here is unbelievable. If I do find any herbs, maybe they'll help in that respect.

Vincent

I follow Diana, keeping an eye on the hatch leading to the deck above. Someone knows we're here, alright, and more enemies may be upon us at any moment. That laughter, and the ensuing silence, doesn't bode well.

As Diana looks at the kegs, I look at the opening. "I think I can get through there," I say. "I could check what's up there and come back."

Diana sees bits of dried meat. In one cracked keg she sees dried beef, while the other contains dried pork. It may be just as well that nothing in this stack is useful, however, as almost every barrel in this stack is doused with the blood of one of Reaver's kills.

Vincent is concerned about enemy movement. No matter how hard he concentrates, he is unable to detect any more moment at this time. Vincent is not easily fooled by attempts at stealth once he is aware of a presence. It is likely that his inability to detect movement means that no one above is moving.

When Mariya speaks, anyone who takes a good look at he tiny muse's waistline and the narrow opening can plainly see that she is able to fit through without disturbing the bulkhead. Smoke is billowing from her fresh kill at the moment.

I wrinkle my nose and move to examine the stack I had been hiding behind in the first place, since all of the barrels there, and in the stack beside it, are free of blood. I pull one barrel open an inch or so, peering and sniffing at what's inside.

This one contains wine. It seems that wine and ale were stacked together. It happens that Diana has heard of an herbal recipe which mixes St. John's Wort with merlot, but it's known for having more side effects than benefits.

I take note of the wine, but leave it be for now. The alcohol might be good for disinfecting injuries, or even taking the edge off of pain -- though that would run the risk of clouding the drinker's wits. I move to the stack close to the ladder, keeping the kegs between myself and the ladder to be out of sight of anything that might come down.
