Tigress Lily sees Ariel's shot whiz overhead as she scales the wall. Trusting in her student's aim, she follows the arrows path and attacks.

Well, the ass-hats look distracted. I glance at Fenella and Mariya. Maybe I can move position and shoot, distracting the ass-hats from their location?

I'll sneak off to the side and see if I can start picking the strange creatures off.

Creeping quietly around the perimeter of the cave, I'm sure I'm unheard by the ass-hats. I stop when I'm sure my attack won't draw their immediate attention to where Fenella and Mariya lurk. Better to keep the creatures guessing.

Aiming quietly while they're busy muttering -- did I hear ten? -- I let my bolt fly.

I watch as Dila moves away from Fenella and I.

((forgot to hashtag it...but it's notice))

I don't want to draw attention to Fenella and I, but as Dila shoots, I make up my mind. Hoping Fenella will be ready, I begin to sing, calling lightning.

Ariel and Lily focus on one target, but he is nimble. Each attack barely grazes him. Before Furtano can join the fight, a larger creature busts through the wall and grabs him.

[Furtano: Use Athletics to escape or Physique to overpower! If you roll a 4 or less, Big Harry will use a grapple attack next turn.]

In the cave, Dila attempts to confuse the donkey-men by sneaking by them. This works with mixed results. The ass-hats fail to notice Dila, but Mariya's bolt of lightning is impossible to miss. One donkey-man gives the muse's perch a swift kick, hoping to knock Mariya off the stalagmite.

[Mariya: Use Athletics to avoid tumbling clumsily to the ground! If you roll 4 or less, you take -2 on your next defense roll. You can still use a magic attack from where you landed.]

If he intends to catch Mariya, Fenella's glowing sword puts a stop to that. The ass-hat backs off even as Mariya struggles to maintain her balance. Another ass-hat takes a swing at the princess.

As Mariya and Fenella face the ass-hats, Dila is the first to see a pink ray of light emanating from above. A large donkey-man leaps down from the apparent hole in the ceiling. He lands with such force, he cracks the large rock formation beneath his hooves. Pink lightning dances along the blade of his electric axe. He glares at little Mariya as her arms flail wildly.

"Looks like somebody…" He dons a pair of sunglasses. "…called down the thunder."

ROLLS
Ass-Hats: 4U1+3 => 3 #Athletics (hill) = -2hp to Ariel's and Lily's target
Ass-Hats: 4U1+3 => 4 #Physique (hill) = grab Furtano!
Ass-Hats: 4U1+1 => 0 #Physique (hill) = fail to roll rock
Ass-Hats: 4U1+2 => 1 #Fight (hill) = attack Lily

Ass-Hats: 4U1+3 => 4 #Athletics (cave) = -1hp to Mariya's target and Dila just missed! Dila gets a Fate point.
Ass-Hats: 4U1+2 => 2 #Notice (cave) = fail to notice Dila
Ass-Hats
: 4U1+2 => 2 #Fight (cave) = attack Fenella

Ass-Hats: 4U1+2 => 4 #Fight (cave) = kick stalagmite to knock Mariya off

These donkey-legged guys sure are quick on their hooves! As one attacks Lily, I aim an arrow at him, hoping to aid my trainer if I can.

Lily volleys onto the ledge and grabs the donkey man, attempting to hurl him over the edge.

Mariya loses her balance and falls off her stalagmite. Seeing the donkey with lightning, she calls her own to strike him.

I try to catch Mariya, not very successfully, as she falls.

On the Hill

Ariel's arrow causes the ass-hat to stagger. Lily tosses him over the cliffside. As for Furtano, a larger donkey man takes him by surprise and knocks him out cold.

((I'll post Brawler moves which explain what a roll of 19 does for that class. I had already PM'd the moves to myself, but I still want to fine-tune Shield Maiden and Samurai before I commit to the class-specific combat moves. I should at least post what I'm thinking now though, just so when enemies use class skills you know it's fair.))

Brother Lorenzo decided to head up the hill, but he hesitates when the spear-wielder tries to roll a boulder at him. The boulder does not budge.

In the Cave

Fenella tries to catch Mariya, but misses. As she bends to pick up the tiny muse, a charging ass-hat impales his nose on the solid gold sword.

((An 8's a hit… I didn't wanna waste it.))

Mariya proves she can take care of herself when she zaps Pinkeye Floyd with a bolt of lightning. Before he can retaliate, Dila shoots his glasses off.

((I rolled a 10 for Dila, and since Furtano was KO'd, I didn't roll for him.))

My target staggers as my arrow flies, only for Lily to chuck him over the cliff. The sight makes me grin, but only for a second. Another donkey man, this one bigger than the rest, snatches at Furtano and knocks him out cold. I yell at the brute as I aim an arrow.

"Hey, butthead! Leave him alone!"

((Wow. First d20 roll and I get to invent a move! Glad it was her and not a villain!))

Lily sneaks up an the enemy from behind, but has second thoughts about swinging that big, heavy hammer. She chucks it over her shoulder and simply grabs the donkey man by his mullet. She yanks so hard he stumbles over backwards, landing on the other fallen donkey man.

As for the hammer, it cracks over the horned head of Big Harry.

Now on the ground, Mariya tries to zap the upright ass-hat nearest her and Fenella, but hits a foul note. She continues to hold it, however, hoping her voice stabilizes before she gets hit.

Dangit! My last attack shot off the weirdo's glasses, but didn't even scratch him. And now he probably knows where I am!

That lightning doesn't look too healthy for me. I glance around, wondering if I should try to find a more concealed position. The pink light isn't helping my case. I hear Mariya attack magically with lightning of her own. That decides me. Enough subtlety -- now's the time to really go after him, before he can get at me. Before I can change my mind, I raise my crossbow and shoot straight at the donkey-man on the pillar.

((Not too sure how effects and combos work so I'll let you decide what the high roll means.))

Lily flings her hammer over the cliff. The hammer cracks over Harry's hairy ass hat as Ariel's arrow plunges into him. Lily also tosses an ass-hat off the cliff, using him as a projectile to finish off the other. She raises her opponent's spear triumphantly.

Furtano is snoring away, but the big donkey man is blinded by the blood gushing from his hat—which was apparently obtained from a fresh kill. He is unable to focus. The ass-hat that took a big fall is able to shake off the pain and remain conscious, but he is too disoriented to attack.

In the cave, Mariya is charging a spell. The lightning field around her is somewhat unstable. Fenella steps in front of the little muse to protect her, but when she swings at her opponent, she fails to consider the tall, thin rock formation. She cuts through it, but the rock deflects her attack. She misses her opponent… but the rock lands on top of the ass-hat that was on his back. Odds are, he won't get up again. The ass-hat still on his feet slugs Fenella, but Mariya is unharmed, and still charging her magic.

As for Floyd… indeed he has noticed the mercenary. He leaps from the rock and swings his axe downward with a mighty blow! But Dila's bolt shoots him in mid-jump, forcing him back. His axe splits the rock formation below, but Dila is unscathed.

Sheesh, that's a lot of blood. How much is his and how much is from his hat? I'm not sure I want to know. But I do want to add to it while I have the chance!

Wow! My arrow clips the leg muscle of the disoriented donkey-man, and drags him forward by sheer momentum as it keeps on going. Both hooves clonk the big guy hard in the face as my arrow sinks into his hairy body. That ought to do some damage!

Brother Lorenzo recites a prayer…

"Beloved Goddess of the Open Sea,
A Vastly Unexplored Part of Our World
Filled with Endless Destinations,
Endless Possibilities…

"A Mere Mortal Such as Myself
Cannot Proclaim to Comprehend Your Plan,
The Fate of My Brothers,
The Fate of Those Before Me
Valiantly Fighting Evil Forces…

"I Can Only Ask You This:
Bless These Heroes,
Those Who Stand Before Me,
And Those Who Stand with Your Daughter…"

embed

The prayer is not yet answered. Brother Lorenzo patiently awaits his Goddess' blessing.

Though the monk's prayer is not yet answered, it seems The Voice is watching over her youngest servant. The arrow clips the hooves of the fallen donkey man, though what happens exactly does immediately register in Ariel's eyes. It turns out the donkey man fell hard—so hard his head was embedded in the ground, if not the gut of his fallen ally. His hooves indeed kicked the largest donkey man in the face, but the hooves were no longer attached to the body.

Teeth shatter, and Ariel's pretty sure she sees an eye shoot into the hole in the wall. If the big donkey man has any fight left in him, Lily's crazed leap over the cliff's edge takes care of that. Her spear finds an apparent vulnerability in her target's helmet, guiding the weapon into the enemy's brain.

Lily wipes blood and ass hairs from her face then says to Ariel, "Now you see why I told you to avoid male smiths that craft so-called 'female armor.'"

I figure in a month's time, Lily must've told Ariel about making armor from her kills. I know it's more of a fantasy art thing to have "shapely" armor, and a whole other level of ridiculous for smiths to actually make something that no woman would buy… but still, there's gotta be some clueless guy who tries selling that crap.

Ariel's not a dolt. I'm sure she didn't need Lily to tell her that armor shouldn't look like something out of a Victoria's Secret catalogue, and the two were simply agreeing on that point and maybe getting some laughs at the smiths trying to sell such a thing.

For a moment I gape in shock at the speedy end of the big donkey-man -- and it seems the battle, too -- but then Lily's comment makes me burst out laughing. Once I get my breath back, I look around at Furtano and Brother Lorenzo. The preacher seems to be better off; at least he's still conscious. I smile at him. "Thanks for the prayer."

I move to check on Furtano, wondering whether he'll come to on his own. The big guy grabbed him pretty hard.

When Ariel thanks Brother Lorenzo for his prayer, he nods. "It's true I joined The Order of the Passive Voice, and we are in fact pacifists. Unfortunately, these hell-spawns don't show any kindness to the meek." He looks up the mountain pass. "They are with Her, now, listening to Her muses sing."

Lily kicks a small rock. It's wedged in the ground, so it doesn't roll anywhere. Ariel sees Lily wince, but she's quick to cover up her pained expression. She asks the monk, "Are you sure there's no one who can be saved up there?"

"I am not certain," says the monk, "nor am I naive to have such expectation." Despite his words, he drops to his knees to continue his prayer.

While Lorenzo prays, Ariel checks on Furtano. He's a bit bruised, but considering how much he's been tossed like a rag doll, he looks fine. When Ariel speaks to him, Furtano blinks a few times, then sits up. He looks around and sees that all is well. Messy, but well.

For a moment, Lorenzo's whispers to The Voice are the only sound other than the wind:

"...if even one of my brothers still lives, grant him the wisdom to ward off the evil ones. Surely, those who bravely faced the enemy deserve to survive more than the coward who ran away."

Lily sits at Ariel's side and says softly, "If you ask me, the guy's being hard on himself. It takes more than harsh-but-family-friendly words to take down these creeps. That amazing shot of yours did the trick!"

I nod. "Discretion is the better part of valor, they say. Knowing when to fight and when to retreat so you can live to fight again."

When Lily praises my marksmanship, I smile. "Well, your leap with that spear finished him off for good. That kill goes to you." I glance over the bloodied corpse. "Not sure there's anything worth claiming from him, though. Or those two." I stretch and look into the cave mouth. "We should go help our other friends."
