Is there a word for this?

I read a book months ago,
they used a term for an orb that held magic energy for a mage to tap into when in need of more energy then they had in themselves.

Basically a mage battery. Is there a name for it or is this something the author made up?

it's kinda common in some things, generally a focus or ord, or many other names. I don't think it has an official name, but a lo of stories with mages use it.

It's a common theme. I don't think it has a name. I've seen them called Orbs of Power, power crystals, mage orbs, orbs of creation... crystals are even more popular than orbs, and some wands and staffs also get used this way. It's also one possible function of a familiar.
