Enjoy the movie.

I haven't seen that one. When asked, my daughters picked Sing. That was about as good as a Pixar film, which is not something I normally say about a Dreamworks production.

So... CNY kept me busy, but I'm getting closer to a card game that resembles what we've been doing here--that is, ATTACK cards would more or less define what power/grace/instinct do, while MONSTER cards would define what you'll have to defend against.

Since defense is rolled, saving throws don't exist, so I considered the limited combinations of attack and defense rolls:

The three most common are:

Fight - power vs. instinct
Shoot - instinct vs. instinct
Magic - grave vs. grace

At this point, I considered having power defend fighting, but that makes the amazon OP. Plus, I thought of a few things...

Some monsters are grabby, and so are amazons!

Grapple - power vs. power

The fairy weapons don't hurt. The bow shoots arrows with fairy dust on them. And you wouldn't dodge a toothpick, so it's a matter of the monster's ability to resist magic.

Fairy Bow - instinct vs. grace
Fairy Slap - power vs. grace

The slap is there because the fairy is too weak to fight monsters. Until she has her fairy bow, she can only cast her spell and slap fairy dust on enemies. She can slap dust on friends too, depending on the effect.

So of the remaining combinations, I need to give the huntress and nymph some race/class-specific attacks. So far, instinct dodges weapon attacks, grace resists magic, and power resists the physical. So...

Trap - instinct vs. power
Allure - grace vs. power

Traps and "the nymph effect" are physical, so they're resisted with power. There's only one combination left, and given the power-ups I thought of, the remaining grace attack goes to the nymph:

Command - grace vs. instinct

Technically, the attack itself is fighting (power vs. instinct), but the player rolls grace to command her mount. So unless I change my mind (and I have an art direction in mind, so I doubt I will), three of the nymph's power-ups will be connected to an Olympian goddess. Artemis' gift is "Sweet Ride"--an obedient mount which of course will be depicted as a unicorn on the ability/power-up/whatever-I-end-up-calling-it card.

I'll need to design ATTACK cards that have your four basic attacks: fight, shoot, magic, and the race/class-specific attack. Fairies won't have fight as an option and nymphs won't have shoot. Everyone will be able to cast spells, and spells will likely be once-per-battle. Nymphs will have an ability to re-cast spells. ("Pearl of Wisdom" from Athena) That ability will replace the slow-casting I had before.

I can post the updated cards later. They're not definitely "final" until I have ATTACK and MONSTER cards to complement them.

Worth pointing out: players and GMs wouldn't be expected to memorize what defense works against what attack. The card would actually display that.

Yeah, that makes sense to give characters other types of attacks. So if the Huntress had a beast-speaking spell, commanding the beast might work. That or she rolls the beast's stats and fights as the beast, rather than command it.

You've given me food for thought. I appreciate it!

LS: So how would Kell even be able to get to Heph's level? I know she can leap and jump with her legs, but I was under the impression that that they should be trying to avoid the maidens' attention, which leaves Kell without anything to climb.

I love the idea of Sigrlinn and Kell being Heph's shoulder-angel and shoulder-devil. Can't believe I didn't pick up on that sooner!

You're not driving a fly anymore, so the maidens won't feel a need to swat you.

Here's what I've got so far for abilities:

Fairy_ABILITY_1.png

Basically, she's tiny and winged.
Fairy_ABILITY_2.png

Fairy dust is has several uses… which I think would go on an attack card. Or a rule book. Not on the ability card, anyway. (I'd want players and GMs to feel free to invent fairy dust effects rather than be limited by whatever I happen to think of.)
Fairy_ABILITY_3.png

Basically, shoot fairy dust.
Fairy_ABILITY_4.png

Basically, you can actually hurt monsters by shooting them.

I actually started by specifying which types of attacks you can shield. Then I realized just let her shield ANY attack as long as it inflicts damage. (The nymph will have a similar ability that uses grace to dispel effects.) The amazon would basically run around with a shield catching attacks aimed at her friends—or maybe a crowd of innocent people, saving as many as she can! She rolls 4 dice (power) instead of 2 (instinct), but has to defend those who failed their defense rolls before saving herself.

The nymph version will be "Sacrificial Maiden." The artwork will be inspired by the "Release the kraken!" scene in Clash of the Titans. Andromeda is chained to a rock, symbolizing that the grace roll is meant to break chains (or other disabling effects).

You'd need to roll 2 shields to successfully block an attack if defense is halved. But I see this as a card you play after scoring a decent combo. You might not mind getting hit if you roll 3 or 4 attacks and count that as 6 or 8 hits.

I made all of the ability cards conditional, rather than saying you can only use them once. For some reason, I like that better than saying 1/battle or 1/day.

I'm not sure my link will work. Couldn't get it to play properly on my iPad, anyways.

I like holo-Vin, too. Kell's been missing real Vin! Maybe we can bring him in at some other point.

Well, if Sigrlinn also requests a song for couples, I can work that back in. Uh... act surprised? A real surprise should probably be included with the fake surprise.

I did have an idea in mind, but tbgg beat me to the punch. ^^ We'll see if I still consider it viable tomorrow. I should head off for the night.

Actually... am I allowed to discuss stuff OOC (possibly with Kell via PM, but also here if LS wants)? I might do that for now.
