The Orc Camp

Korgak eats from the same food, and drinks the same ale as the party. Perhaps out of courtesy, perhaps to show it is not poisonous. The meat is not bad, but it lacks any kind of spice or seasoning and is slightly undercooked. The ale is pungent and strong.

Korgak listens with interest to what Liadan has to say, and what Baldhart says through translation by Liadan. His expression darkens when dwarves are mentioned, but he does not interrupt. When Liadan and Baldhart have finished, Korgak sets aside his food and ale and moves closer to Liadan and Baldhart.

"What is Aslaug to you?" he asks Liadan, speaking orc-tongue. "An elf and a human from the south? Why do you fight? I will not bow before Aslaug. I will not bow before you. My orcs live free, by the laws of our people. You want me to exchange one master for another, but my orcs need no masters. Aslaug is not the only one who has tried to move against us. The dwarves have tried as well. They have failed. The Grey Wolves are strong. What do you offer us that we cannot take?"

With that, he folds his arms and holds Liadan's gaze, waiting for a reply.

In the Woods

Branwen seems to understand Marius' intent. She frees her wings as best she cant, then with a somewhat clumsy tongue says "Fry..." and moves her wings in the way Nissa has shown her but which hasn't been effective at getting her off the ground. They still don't work well - the muscles are too weak to lift her. Branwen shakes her head and stops twitching her wings. Instead, she eyes Marius' provisions eagerly and opens and closes her mouth again. She grins.

Just as Branwen is trying to cajole more food out of Marius, he hears Masama's voice call out to someone from the woods just away from the edge of camp, along the trail. The big man sounds stern, though not alarmed. It is clear there is an intruder, though Marius can't see who.

Tumi fumbles for a knife and looks at Marius. "Got company, sounds like."

Nissa, from here high vantage point, catches glimpses of the figure moving along the ground - a dwarf with robes and a staff. He searches for something in the area where Nissa first sees him, but finding nothing he heads toward the party's camp. As he nears the group remaining in the woods, which includes Branwen, Masama steps from hiding beneath a low overhang of snow-covered branches and challenges the dwarf. The dwarf stops and raises his staff defensively before him.

Liadan

I shake my head and respond in the orc-tongue. <We do not ask you to serve us, but to stand at our side as equals. I see that you are strong, but the Taint of Aslaug is strong also, and it will spread to the south if we do not stop it here. All races must band together if we all are to survive. If we turn against each other, there will be no one left.>

I take a breath and go on, <If you side with us, Korgak, we can make our fighters even stronger. Many humans and dwarves would not trust an orc envoy, but we elves and humans can enter human and dwarven settlements and speak with them on your behalf. There will be no need for bloodshed if we can gain what we need with peaceful words. When we have humans and dwarves on our side, then we can stand all the better against Aslaug.>

I pause there, not wanting my tongue to run away with me. I have hopes beyond that -- perhaps Aslaug's orcs, if they are defeated and side with us, can aid us against Aeron. But nothing is certain yet, and I know we need to take things one step at a time.

I sip the ale. The alcohol is strong and not particularly tasty, but I take a good sized gulp. Having no idea what words were spoken, but seeing the crossed arms, I figure I better show I like the stuff and then say something useful.

"I know I am among strong people; even the ale is strong!"

embed

Okay, now that I've got his attention, I'll let Liadan translate that while I think of something useful to add. I'm pretty sure I heard Aslaug's name.

"Aslaug is strong too. As strong as Korgak? Of course not. But she is strong in the ways that most aren't, including my own people. Aslaug has united troglodytes, gnolls, goblins, orcs--some orcs--and some humans, one of which is here." I show Korgak the nineteenth of the thirty-four hatch marks on my skull (formerly worn as a helm).

"The north cannot win if its people are divided. We must form alliances. Simply put, one ally does not work for another. We agree to respect each other's claimed lands as they are now, do each other no harm, and when Aslaug comes, we are all on the same side."

I let Liadan translate, and ask that Korgak's response be translated. I add that we should see if he buys into this before attempting to take the dwarves. I will attempt to buy their freedom.

Marius holds a piece of jerky above Branwen's head, just out of reach so that she has to jump if she is going to get it. Keeping an eye on her sharp teeth so as not to get bitten by them, he says to Tumi, "Company? How wonderful. Shall I put the kettle on? I suppose I should have cleaned this place up a bit if I had known to expect company. Bad manners to invite company to a filthy house, you know."

He thinks for a moment and then says, "You know, I don't think I have any tea. What a dreadful host I am being."

The Orc Camp

Korgak listens to Liadan speak, his expression initially one of skepticism, particularly when she mentions equals. "When have elves and men considered the orc their equal? Why should I fight for the lowlanders? I need only my mountains. If Aslaug's orcs come here, I will defeat them." As the conversation goes on, Korgak looks increasingly as though he's swallowed something foul whenever dwarves are mentioned. Finally, when Baldhart mentions respecting each other's lands, Korgak barks out a humorless laugh.

"Have you asked the dwarves about this?" He jabs a finger at Baldhart's notched skull. "You are strong. You and your friends have courage to walk into my camp. But you are tall for a dwarf," Korgak cocks his head, "and I see no beard."

There is a tittering of laughter among the gathered orcs who are listening to the proceeding, which Korgak cuts off with a raised hand. "Speak to the stunties before you talk to me of respecting lands. They have chased us far from the mountains near their precious Drimmen Delve, and still they come after us. Three we caught just yesterday. Speak to their king, then talk to me of respecting land."

Korgak folds his arm and gives Baldhart and Liadan level looks.

Outside the cave, one of the orc guards has opened the cave and tossed the wounded dwarf inside. He leans in and places a hand on the motionless dwarf, then calls out to a non-armored orc carrying wood through the camp. The other orc drops the wood and helps the guard drag the motionless dwarf from the cage, which causes the dwarf who glared at the party when they arrived to launch into a frenzy, swinging at the two orcs who are trying to take the body. The dwarf is too weak, though, and a swift punch from the guard doubles him over. The body is removed and the cage is once again locked. It is clear now that the motionless dwarf is dead, the side of his face crushed by some heavy object. The orc who was carrying the wood begins dragging the body of the dead dwarf away, with the dwarf who was punched yelling dwarven curses at his back.

The commotion is heard within the cave.

In the Woods

Branwen bares her sharp teeth and leaps for the food Marius is holding, pleased with herself when she manages to grab a morsel. The food goes straight into her mouth. She's still chewing when word comes in about visitors, and Branwen turns in the direction of the voices.

Masama, as it turns out, is blocking the dwarf's path to the camp just as Tumi comes up behind him. "Do not name me an orc-friend," says Masama. "I am friend to those who walk Asra's path, whether they know it or not. I deem these orcs are not such, but that remains to be seen."

The dwarf narrows his eyes at Masama, then flicks them at Tumi when he comes walking up. The distant singing of Bressel begins to be heard, barely, above the sounds of the forest. The dwarf turns back to Masama. "Your skin is like that of the drow, though less dark. Are you kin to them?"

"I had never seen such creatures before coming to the north," Masama says, "and they are no friends of mine. We slew a number of them some days ago."

"And yet you seek to ally with the orcs..."

Masama shrugs. "We seek to save the north."

((I didn't mention Nissa here because I don't know if LS wants to change what she does based on the fact that the orc was already talking to Masama, which was happening in PM and LS didn't know about it. If so, feel free to post something else for Nissa. If you want her to basically say the same thing, let me know and I'll post a quick update of the dwarf's reaction to her)).

Liadan

I translate Korgak's words for Baldhart before responding in his tongue.

"The Drimmen-delve is where we seek to go next," I say, my eyes on Korgak. "As we have sought for some days now. Allying with your people does not change that. We fully intend to speak with their king of alliance between our races."

I pause, and a moment later a commotion sounds outside the cave. I will myself not to turn and cede distraction, but I wonder nonetheless at what is happening. All I hear is cursing in dwarvish.

Cadell

I watch as the orcs imprison another dwarf, then drag away the dead one. The one who was in the cage to start with shouts in dwarvish, what I can only imagine are curses. I force myself to be still, not knowing what the orcs may do if I intervene with them.

Liadan

I get an idea. "Will you let us speak with your dwarf captives? One of our company is a Dwarf-friend, and he may be able to find rapport with them. Perhaps we might bring them back to the Drimmen-delve with us, as a token of your good faith in the alliance."

When I hear the cursing, I tell Liadan I will make an offer for the prisoners.

"I will gladly talk to the dwarves as you say, Korgak. The king if he will speak to me. He might be willing, if you let us take the prisoners, the live ones anyway.

"I realize that our returning one of your people was the price of admission, and it will be a long time before we get to Drimmen-Delve. I won't insult you by trading prisoners for a promise. Even taking prisoners of no use to you requires immediate payment.

"As you noted, I am taller than a dwarf. Tall enough that armor forged for my body would fit your stronger warriors. My bronze plate armor is in perfect condition." Since he likes the skull, I point out hatch marks 20-27. "I was attacked by fish demons while bathing along the shoreline last week. Didn't have time to get dressed. Had to ditch my sword after killing one, so I killed the rest with my bare hands. It was exhilarating! I vowed to my goddess to depend on my strength instead of metal. I was planning to sell the armor in Ballara, since I have no use for it.

"I can't imagine you have a use for the dwarf prisoners. The dead one will serve as a warning to any friends of his who have thoughts of climbing your mountain without an invitation."

I clarify that my offer is to trade my bronze plate armor for the surviving prisoners, suggesting it would fit any of the red-sash guards. I wait to see if my offer is considered before I say more.

I swoop down to the dwarf, hoping to present myself in a way that says messenger-of-goddess and not harpy. When I get to eye level, I slow my descent. I let my wings fold and curtsy as I land.

"Forgive the interruption, Runemaster Brok. I am Nissa van Donk, servant of Brynhild. I am here for the reason Masama stated: we seek to save the north.

"The orcs are better friends than enemies. Or maybe efforts at alliance will result in a truce if we're fortunate. Too many old wounds, and fresh wounds too, now that we see your people and the orcs are at war. This is how Aslaug will win the north. She will align with gnolls, orcs, goblins, kobolds, humans, troglodytes... and the rest of the continent will deem these alliances disgraceful. Only in death will you see the wisdom behind Aslaug's evil ambition.

"None in the camp behind Masama represent an army interested in taking land. We only wish to protect the innocent. Convincing the orcs to stop raiding Ballara may not be an easy feat, but we have some in the camp attempting that, including the one Brynhild sent me to protect."

I make sure I have Brok's full attention before I go on.

He sneaks up behind the dwarf and draws his bow, training it on him without revealing his presence in case the strange stranger decides to do anything silly to his ward. Company or not, Marius wasn't taking chances with Nissa. Besides, he didn't have any tea, so graceful hosting was out anyway.

Korgak listens to Liadan, his expression unchanging from his previously grim visage. Whenever there is mention of dwarves, angry mutters circulate among the orcs gathered in the cave. When Liadan mentions an alliance, Korgak grunts out a laugh.

"My orcs will die before standing in battle with the stunties. Speak no more of an alliance with those wretches. I oppose Aslaug to keep my orcs from being enslaved. I will fight those who serve her if they come against us, but my axe will shorten a stuntie by a head before I let one guard my back. You say you will fight Aslaug, but you are not many. My people struggle to survive. Can you keep the humans and dwarves from our heels? Speak your words to them first. If they agree to leave us in peace, I will think about joining your force against Aslaug - if it exists. But you will find me dead in the ground before I fight beside a stuntie!"

This speech is met with loud approval from the other orcs, and Korgak looks around at them satisfied. "Take the dwarf friend too!" one of the orcs calls from a few paces away. "Find out which one loves the stunties!"

Korgak silences the speaker with a gesture and shakes his head, saying "These have safe passage here - for this talk. Any who disagree may face me in the circle." He gives a steely glare to the orc who spoke up, and the orc goes silent. Korgak nods. Then he turns to Liadan again: "You should not have brought a dwarf-friend here."

When Baldhart speaks about the prisoners, and Liadan translates, the gathered orcs start to grow agitated once more, and even Korgak's mouth twists in a nasty grimace, but before he can deny Baldhart outright she speaks of the bronze armor. Korgak's look changes to one of consideration. "That is a fine offer for a couple of dirty stunties. Is it a serious one? I would see this armor. If it is sufficient tribute, then perhaps I will trade."

Outside, the orcs have tossed the dead dwarf unceremoniously into the woods, and the remaining dwarves stare death at them, the wounded dwarf seeming to have recovered some of his senses. The dwarf who has been glaring at the group calls out in the common tongue "Look at you, disgraceful wretches. Are these the filth you call friends? A curse on all of you!"

Callan stares back at the dwarf impassively. Burnbright turns away from the dwarves and wipes at her eyes.

In the Woods

Before Masama can say more, Nissa comes into view, Brok's head jerking up as he sees her. He listens to her introduction, saying. "You serve a human goddess, but you are no human. You serve a just goddess, yet you consort with orcs.

"Do not speak to me of the virtue of orcs. They are low creatures, and these potential 'friends' you speak of even now hold three of my kin. If you are allied with them, then you are in a sense also my kin's captors.

"If you and your large friend wish to speak, then land before me and let us speak as equals, on solid ground. Do not think your wings will avail you should you attack me. I have wielded this staff for many years, and I'll weave air around those wings in an instant. This is not an empty boast. Land and speak to me as an equal. Tell me why you think orcs have any valor in them. I will not strike you."

Masama's characteristic grin fades as the dwarf speaks of using magic against Nissa, and by the time the dwarf is done Masama looks decidedly unhappy. He looks up at Nissa, clearly prepared to take a cue to attack if the little valkyrie makes that decision.

Meanwhile, Marius has managed to pick his way through the surrounding landscape to a point on the trail behind the dwarf - just enough out of view that the dwarf does not know he's there, but such that he still has a line of sight for an attack. Branwen follows Marius, mimicking his careful steps through the woods. She's very quiet and she isn't willing to be shaken despite any gestures or whispered commands Marius might make. She simply looks at him blankly, then continues to follow.

((Marius could ditch her if he wants to. Just say so and she'll be standing in the woods wondering where the hell he went)).

Tumi stays where he was, wondering in a low voice whether everyone has gone mad.

Bressel's voice can be heard growing more loud through the forest, clearly approaching. The dwarf frowns when he hears it and tightens his grip on his staff.

Aliron remains unseen, watching the proceedings.

((Bressel will encounter Marius, and Branwen if she's with him, first, unless the two leave the trail))

The roar of approval is a bit of a concern, but I see he takes my offer seriously.

"Korgak, I will bring you the armor for the dwarves. You will see the armor is not at all battle-worn. You want me to keep humans and dwarves off your heels. When the people of Ballara see that I have spoken to you, and know you granted me safe passage and let me release your prisoners, your word will be taken seriously by the humans.

"The few dwarves I met were a stubborn lot. It may be possible to keep them off your mountain if they understand that there is more at stake than the differences between your people and them. Leaving with all surviving prisoners will help. But of course, you need to see my armor before agreeing to this."

I take another swig of the ale and put down the tankard.

"If you permit me, I will get the armor now."

I await his response before getting up.

"I will also ask your permission to respond to that loudmouth dwarf should he curse me as I pass."

"Speak as equals?" I land. "I will stand here so you can look down at me instead of up, but you may call it speaking as equals when you stop telling me how you can easily kill me with your magic stick. As for these wings you are so quick to ridicule, I earned these when I was struck down by an orc 800 years ago.

"You say you have people in the orc camp. I have seen them myself. But no matter how powerful your magic is, it's not enough to save your friends. The very sight of you puts them at risk—and we are equals in that respect. I must not be seen by the orcs either. They'll think I'm a harpy, and with half our party unarmed in the camp, I don't need to create trouble.

"Now, as I said, we need to move to our camp immediately." I don't mention Bressel and his orc escort.

Since Branwen seems to be quiet enough and it seems like a good chance for her to learn how to be sneaky, Marius allows her to sneak behind him. He puts a finger in front of his mouth nods knowingly at the harpy girl to make sure she understands that now is not the time to be making sounds. As the dwarf threatens Nissa, Marius pulls his bow taut and gets ready to stick the dwarf in the back if there is even a hint of an attack coming from him.

"Dwarf, the orc will sound the alarm when he sees you. All negotiations will end. I could have attacked you not long after the dogs barked at you. We are not enemies of dwarfs or orcs. Our enemy is the enemy of every organization of humanoids. Move quickly, not as a prisoner, but as an equal. You can talk more when time is not short! Anyone attacks the dwarf unprovoked will receive an arrow from me. I promise you this."

I tell Brok, "What Aliron says is right. We have a common enemy—you, us, the orcs—she is Aslaug, and she is particularly interested in Drimmen-delve. I will tell you more later—now one of ours is returning, escorted by an orc. Picking a fight with that orc will get our people in the orc camp killed, and they intend to get your people out. You need to follow me, or someone stealthier if you prefer, and keep hidden until the orc escort is gone."

The Orc Camp

Korgak folds him arms. "Bring me this armor so that I can see it for yourself. If it is what you claim, I will release the stunties. But do not be too quick to look for their gratitude, or that of the people of Ballara.

"Leave one of your company behind, as a guarantee you will return rather than flee to Ballara with news of our numbers and location."

When Baldhart asks to speak to one of the prisoners, Korgak shrugs. "Talk to the stunties if you like, but do not take long. Having you here agitates my warriors."

Korgak then commands the red-sashed guard to lead the group back outside of the cave. Bressel is already gone. The dwarves glower from their cage, one of them in particular seething at the sight of the group and the orcs, the other still bleeding from multiple wounds though he is at least on his feet. They say nothing.

The red-sashed orc looks over the group, then says to Liadan "We will keep this one as hostage, to be sure you will return." He jabs a finger at Burnbright. "You are less likely to abandon one of your young here."

Burnbright's eyes are red-rimmed and she has clearly been upset, but she straightens up when the orc points at her and stares him in the eyes. Then she looks questioningly at Liadan.

The Woods

Brok watches as Nissa lands, then moves his staff to a less threatening posture, holding it against the ground much like a walking stick. "A harpy? That should tell you all you need to know about the intelligence of orcs. You are clearly no harpy - they are vile creatures who live in the earth, or among high mountain aeries. Their teeth and hands are not such as yours, and they are dull of wit."

When Nissa mentions she was killed 800 years ago, the dwarf's eyesbrows go up slightly and he regards her more closely, but his thoughts quickly turn to mention of his kin in the orc camp. "You've seen them with your own eyes? How do they fare? If any has been harmed, Korgak will go into the Book of Grudges alongside his grandsire, doubly cursing his line. If I get my hands on those orcs..."

What he would do is cut off by Nissa's command to move to camp immediately, followed by Aliron calling from the woods behind. The dwarf twists his neck around, trying to see, and letting out a couple words in dwarven that must be expletives. "Honorless curs!" he says, switching back to the common tongue. "I could have come on your camp unannounced, cloaked in air, but did not do so. No, I revealed myself and called out!"

It's not clear if he has even seen Aliron at this point, though he heard him speak. And the dwarf may be overestimating his chances of sneaking into the camp, invisible or not. He doesn't appear to have noticed Marius, who is also obscured by the surrounding woods.

When Nissa interjects comments about Aslaug, the dwarf's visage goes grim (or, rather, more grim). "She does indeed desire the Drimmen-Delve. Now more than ever, no doubt." These words are muttered softly, as though to himself. Then, more loudly: "She allies with the orcs. The very creatures you seek out as friends!"

With a shake of his head, he begins walking in the direction Nissa indicates. Masama steps aside to allow the dwarf to pass, and the dwarf gives him a narrow, sidelong look.

"That is your companion, whose singing we heard?" the dwarf asks Nissa. "It appears that you have an advantage over me, though it was obtained by deceit and that stains your company. If you think to murder me, beware. I will break some skulls before I fall."

I wait while she translates, my one palm sweating as I hope this all goes well.
