"I may be wrong about the traitor."

((@Ireth, the trap isn't set up yet, but I'll run with the reaction anyway.))

"Liadan, please keep your voice down. The 'food' in the boats is so Burnbright and I can make it past the mountains by sea." I show her the way the ship will be rigged, confirming of course it's not food, then lower my voice. "I've talked to the elder and we cannot survive a battle against the gnolls even with the militia. The numbers make it suicide, and these gnolls hold women and children hostage. Where's the honor in that? Where's the honor in making peace with those who murdered children in their homes?

"And before you go on about honor again, be mindful that you're not the one who made the decision to send Burnbright back to Srilkind. It was my decision, and whether the attack itself is my fault or not, my decision got a lot of innocent people killed. If you don't want any part of this plan, flee to the west and we'll regroup later, and I won't have a problem with you doing that. Just don't undermine me, and don't even think of pitying the gnolls—much less warning them. Take a walk through Srilkind as I did—while the enemy was there, and I risked my life to get your lover's horse. Think on that as you question my honor, and that I took a detour to see if I could round up survivors. But there were none that I could see. What I saw were burnt homes where families once lived—where families died. Painfully. And I'll tell you what else I saw: Father Harald's corpse. The gnolls said he 'fought valiantly.' How valiant were they ganging up on one old man while children were screaming in agony all around? Father Harald took out five, but his wounds were on all sides, both sword and crossbow.

"Trapped with no choice but to burn or die another way… it's the deaths they dealt to innocent children, and to die an equal death is too good for 'em. I'd torture them if it didn't go against the path of my Goddess."

I hand the letter to Aldar.

To those who seek Catli,

I have heard your message, and I am inclined to believe what you say regarding Aslaug's reasons for wanting her daughter back. Indeed, if her goal is to stop a powerful demon, this I can agree with.

However, Catli and I are like Sisters. I cannot simply hand her over to an army, especially one that has killed women and children in their homes. That you would hold Arendal hostage only makes you more suspicious. I understand that, based on what we have been told of Aslaug's situation, time is a factor. Therefore, you should have no incentive to bring your fire and swords into Arendal if Catli is not in Arendal. Surely, this is the case if you are told where you can find Catli.

I would like to have a discussion with you, the gnolls. Here are my terms: we will meet in a place that I deem reasonably safe. Neither party will be in the range of any archers, and we will keep a respectful distance from each other and remain seated while we talk. The meeting place will be a three hour walk to the west of Arendal. From there, an unarmed man will take you to me. Only the gnolls may join him.

"It looks like one of us will need to hand off the letter. Seeing how I need to be at Burnbright's side, Aldar, maybe it's best you handle it. Remember not to lie to them under any circumstances." He can figure out what truths not to reveal. "Tell the gnolls I'll be at the meeting place at midnight and no sooner. It's only a three hour walk from here, so if they leave right away, they'll arrive at the meeting place first. That isn't a problem. I just don't want them to think they've been tricked."

Not until they're about to die, you mean.

Right, Nissa. They can think what they want when they see you. It'll be too late at that point.

"Aldar, if they ask too many stupid questions, just tell 'em all you know is as long as Arendal is safe, I'm willing to talk to them. But we're not leaving Burnbright here so she can watch people die over her. If her mother really cares about her, she should know killing people to get her daughter back's not the best way to win her over."

I fold my arms. "Good luck finding the gnolls without Cadell's help. He's the only one who knows where they are, and I don't see him here. Feel free to look back at the inn, but I didn't see him there, either."

I know where he must have gone, but I hold my silence. Maybe he can put a stop to all this, and spare the need for anyone to die.

"Cadell says he wants consensus, then he pulls an Ankari on me?"

I take back the letter.

"Wait, Aldar... I'll be back in a minute. No one follow me."

I move away from the group.

"Well, I don't seem to be needed here, so if you don't mind I'm going back to bed."

I turn away and head back toward the inn. Halfway there I waver, wondering whether I should try to find Llucheden's hoofprints and follow Cadell to where the gnolls are. I soon decide it's a bad idea -- they may suspect me as one of those who would deceive them. Silently praying to Oercus to give Cadell luck, I go back to the Spear and up to my room to wait for Cadell's return, whether triumphant or not.

"Not a problem, I reckon it will be fairly straight forward."
Baldhart takes the letter back from me and I look up, A grin on my face.
"Ohh, So now Im not good enough for this errand?" I let out a chuckle.

"Ok, Il remain with the boats, Give me a shout if you need anything at all!"

The wind is cold coming in off the ocean, but it is easy enough to duck down within the boat and shelter yourself from it, should you desire. Grim stays there by the boats after his last trip down the stairs. He looks out over the dark sea, his brow creased in contemplation.

--unless he encounters someone else Bressel will go into the inn knock on doors and if no one is there he will wait outside watching for Aliron or the group.

--Unless he encounters someone else, Aliron will walk past the temple(noticing the guards, and if the cell has a prisoner), then walk to meet Bressel at the inn's front door.

Bressel knocks on the doors at the inn, but it seems the structure has been abandoned. Even Aga and Grim's wife are gone.

Walking past the temple, Aliron sees two guards standing outside. Gisla has made it there by now, and she is inside, conferring with two other men and sorting through what appears to be a pile of clothing. The guards watch Aliron suspiciously as he walks by.

There are no cells of any kind visible inside the temple as Aliron walks past.

Aliron
Aliron decides against going into the blooded temple and fueling raw emotions. His hood is up, but they probably know I am an elf. Hopefully they know I am not the guilty elf.
How many times was I the guilty elf? I wonder with a smile, and walk on to the inn, Bressel stands outside looking around.

"How is Mauve?" Bressel asks.

"She was not captive that I could see, the inn woman was sorting through clothing and talking with towns people."
Aliron looks around, "Have you seen any of the group?"

Aliron leans close,
"Just to be sure, no one is to know where the girls are, I met you on a trail, you never saw where they were. Not even our group. That way if we fall, no one can reveal their hiding place. We must take the information to death if need be. There is no surrender to the dogmen."
"You say Baldhart swore an oath that opposes Mauve, Ankari is on the run, Aldar is in his own llittle world, can our group be any further split? What of the defiled knight and his love?" Aliron asks with a weak sigh.

"Cadell saw the murder and was to be a witness, I know not of Liadan."

"The fallen knight is an eye witness to the crime against Ankari. A time when we need to be the most united, we are the most divided. We need to try to get everyone that isn't sworn to kill or imprision our members together. I fear that number might be far too small."

"I wish we were back in the tunnels, at least only so many enemy could approach at one time."Aliron groans looking at the wide open space of the town. Plenty of room to drop men with arrows, but nothing to stop them from swarming the town, once they reached it. And there are far to many to kill with arrows before they reached the town.

Sleep is a stranger to me this night. I pace the length of my bedroom, unable to find rest, or to decide on anything to better occupy my time. What can I possibly do? How can we think and act as one when everyone is so divided? I thought Cadell wanted to act as our leader, and yet he is one of those who runs off on his own. And what has become of him by now? Will the gnolls listen to what he has to say? Will they stand down, or grow angered and attack?

I can't just stay here wondering. I gather my cloak, bow and quiver, and go outside again. Maybe I can find some others who still have the sense to unite.

Bressel and Aliron stand outside the inn; I cough to announce my presence as I approach, not wanting to startle them into harming me by accident.

"Is there sign of anyone returning?" I ask, looking from one to the other.

"I did not see anyone when I walked in past the temple. I did not see Mauve, did they release her?"

Bressel
"I did not see anyone when I entered town either. Where is everyone?"

After the others leave, I look around.
May as well get some shelter, this wind is chilling me to my bones

As I go down onto one of the boats I see grim staring out over the dark water, He looks deep in thought and after standing for a minute or so I decide to speak with him.

I approach the side of the boat and lean over the side, Looking out in the same direction as him. Then I say

"what's on your mind friend? You seem deep in thought."

I sigh. "The only ones I've seen are Baldhart and Aldar, down by the docks. Baldhart went her own way, into the woods, for I know not what purpose. She told no one to follow her; I wish I had, to gain an answer. Perhaps she found one or more of the others."

Liadan, Bressel, Aliron

The inn is quiet, but for the three of you. There is no sound of action coming from the village itself. While you are speaking, Baldhart enters.

((If upstairs, you hear someone downstairs; if you've moved downstairs you will see her of course)).

The Docks

Grim is staring out over the waves. When Aldar speaks, he says. "I'm just thinking 'bout Srilkind, and all the dead we left back there. That's our whole life - me and the wife. I hope Arendal avoids a similar fate, but even if it does, how do we pick up the pieces back in Srilkind? The Crow will be fine, I suppose, so long as the ships keep coming, but the village won't never be the same. Will anyone stick around to rebuild? Will it be thought cursed because of what happened?"

He shrugs and turns back to the sea.

"Aliron, Bressel… I have a plan to kill the gnolls, and Ankari is helping me set the trap in motion. Gisla, Grim, Keit and Aldar are in on it as well. I'll need your help building the trap itself. I have a drawing, and I can explain what I have in mind as we build. Everything we need is on the boats."

As I show the drawing, I tell Liadan, "The trap is unnecessary if Cadell talked the gnolls into leaving, but if they come—even if supposedly in peace, they come for Burnbright and will crush us if we don't give her up. That won't happen as long as I'm alive."

If I remember right, it was Liadan who had Mauve's stuff.

"Also… Mauve is coming for her things, Liadan. Better to take it to the woods than have her come into town. If you want no part of the trap, maybe you could give her her food and such. If you do, tell her I said be careful, and let me get her spear when it's ready. I know she and Ankari will both look for us when we're west of here.

"Oh… and don't be surprised if you mention my name, then she says she hopes I die or something like that. She hates me."

Voices. I can't make out what is being said, but the voices sound familiar. I tiptoe my way to the common room's door as Baldhart's last words floats past me. Yes, yes, I am a little ugly monster who eats babies.

If she's talking about me it would be unlikely the sow returned to her inn. I take a peek to make sure she's not there before walking in the room and crossing my arms, staring at them in silence.

"First, Alot has happened since I left. But know the girls are safe with Masama. Only I know where they are. They will not be turned over to the town or to the gnolls. I will die before revealing their location. I don't believe one instant that the gnolls will leave without what they have killed for."

Bressel
"Mauve hopes you die? Things have changed since I left."

Aliron

"I guessed Mauve had escaped. I went to check on her first when I returned."

"I do like the sound of the trap. I can help with that."

"The group sounds even more divided then before. So not revealing the location will include party members, even Bressel doesn't know. I don't want to risk the lives of the girls on someone wanting to grandstand or be some hero."

I take a deep breath and stare down into the deep dark sea.
"Who knows friend, sometimes these things just happen, our history is filled with villages that just seemed to cease existing due to any number of reasons, the main one usually being war. We cant help but feel sorry for those caught in the middle, but at the same time we cannot dwell on it or we may make mistakes in the present."

I let out a sigh and look at him. he seems put out with the whole business.

"Perhaps a few ales may help you feel better about it. many soldiers turn to drink to soothe the pain of memories, Some more succesfull than others, What do you say; Im buying." I say with a smile, trying to catch his eye to take his mind off of the sad thoughts that seem to be plaguing his mind."

"No, Bressel… Mauve doesn't literally want me dead!" Does she? "I just mean she's angry. She has a right to be if she really thinks I broke my oath. I'm oath-bound to support her, but not if it means failing my goddess. That's a condition which Nissa had me write down in front of her, but… I can't expect Mauve to understand what failing my goddess means. Not just the definition of failure, but the consequence. If I fail Her knowingly, I lose Nissa—I lose everything I worked for over the past seven years.

"Anyway, now that Ankari's helping me, getting her stuff doesn't make me fail to protect Burnbright or the innocents here in Arendal. In fact, if Mauve hadn't called me as soon as I learned of Cadell's treachery…"

I turn to Liadan, "Er… no offense. I know he means well."

Back to Bressel, "If not for Mauve, there'd be no chance of my plan working, and now Ankari can likely intercept the gnolls and deliver the message when they march this way. Besides, I still think of Mauve as a friend even though she may not."

I say to Aliron, "I intended to have Burnbright on another boat, but your way is best. What I will ask of you is to go to Burnbright and get her necklace. It's possible that the enemy can detect her. In my talk with the gnolls, I intend to ask them that. You should also know that my plan puts one of us at risk.

"The one who takes the gnolls out to sea on the rigged boat. It must be me. I told Ankari I'd do it, so I caution anyone who volunteers to take my place to ensure I live to call Nissa out. Ankari took my oath-bound attempt on his life rather well. He knows the risk I'll take, and that he could easily set me up to die. If he does, and succeeds—meaning I end up dead—I have one request of all of you:

"Forgive him."
