Baldhart and the Blacksmith

As Baldhart 'negotiates' with the blacksmith, a brief hint of suspicion passes across his features. Not a man used to attracting the attention of females, he seems almost to catch on to the fact that a game is afoot. As Baldhart gets further out of her armor, he brushes the doubts aside.

"Ye can leave on the dress, lass. Not let me see here...fifty gold and that scale mail, ye say? Seems a fair deal, I reckon. Yer right in that you do want this to fit proper. Let me just get a good measurement here." He tentatively places a hand on Baldhart's shoulder, then one on the other, nodding and muttering to himself. The first hand slides down a bit, giving the man a bit of a feel. Sweat gathers on his forehead. "A breastplate won't be none to hard to fit for ye. With the work you're a-givin' me, I'll have to get me apprentice in here to do some o' the work. He's a good lad, and knows his way around a blacksmith's hammer. If you come back in the mornin', I'll have it done fer ye."

Mauve and Burnbright

Burnbright reddens as Mauve teases her about Joffur. "I don't like him, exactly. I mean I don't like like him. He's always been mean to me. It's just that when those creatures attacked in Srilkind...well, they almost got me. Next thing I knew, Joffur was pulling me free. He got stabbed for it too. That's the wound Liadan healed.

She looks a Mauve curiously. "What would make a boy who's been nothing but mean to me risk his own skin to pull me out of there like that." She shakes her head. "I don't understand it, but he deserves my thanks, no matter what he did before."

As Mauve talks about the art of low skirts and feminine wiles, Burnbright looks down at her own undefined chest. "No worries there. I don't have anything to show, even if I wanted to."

Cadell and Liadan

The carpenter looks up from his carving when Cadell asks about the price of the drum. He's a weathered man, his face full of deep lines. He looks at the drum and smiles. "That's a good piece, there. I made it a couple o' years ago, and it's sat right there since. I was askin' ten gold for it, but the way you went over to it tells me it just might mean somethin' more to you than an ordinary drum. I like my work to find a home with someone that'll care for it. Just look at the lines I carved on the shell - see how smooth they are. Reminded me of clouds, or maybe the wind, when I carved it. If I took the head off, you'd see the same swirls inside. That changes the sound a bit, gives the ear a bit of a different note than if I'd left it smooth.

The man colors slightly, aware he's rambling as he runs a finger along the carved drum. "I'll sell it to ye for eight gold, lad, if you think that's a fair bargain."

The Maiden's Spear

Baldhart returns to the inn first. Gisla and Aga are in the common room, serving dinner to a number of villagers who are scattered at the tables and bar. With the work day truly over, the place is a bit more crowded, though certainly not lacking in empty space.

Grim sits at the bar bext to his wife, who looks well for the first time since you took her away from Srilkind. When Baldhart asks about the gold he nods. "It's up in my room. I'll get it. The lass didn't spend a coin of it. She wanted to use some of it to pay for her meals at the Crow, but I wouldn't hear of it."

He gets up from his seat and heads upstairs to retrieve his purse. On his way up, he turns back to Baldhart. "You may want to see what the Masama's up to, lass. I heard a strange sort of mumbling coming from out of the room, but I didn't want to barge in on him or anything, so I figured I'd just tell you about it when you came back. Strange fellow, that one. Not sure what to make of him."

With a shake of his head, he goes upstairs.

I nod, turning the drum gently around in my hands as the shopkeeper describes it lovingly. "It's beautiful."

I cannot help but smile when the man calls me 'lad', and I remember just how young I must look to them -- barely a day older than Baldhart. I set the drum down on the counter before reaching into my coin purse. "Eight gold is a fine price, sir. Thank you." I set the coins down on the counter beside the drum. "Do you have a case I might keep it in when it isn't in use? I have many miles of travel ahead of me, and I would not wish to see something this fine damaged by the elements."

The shopkeeper ducks down behind his counter, roots around a bit, and come up with a leather cover that has ties on one end. "Just slip this over it. You may want to get some oil on that leather - it's been under the counter a while. I'll throw it in free. Ye can wear the drum around your waist with the belt, and keep this cover over it that way, or just wrap it up and stow it away in your pack."

"Sometimes boys are mean to girls they fancy. They do not understand what is happening and it makes them upset. They try to get the girl's attention in the way they know, acting like brats." I crack my back. "If you wish to repay him, convince his family of the need to leave this place as soon as possible, right?"

After visiting too many stores I can finally return to the inn, satisfied but exhausted. My stomach promptly growls at the scent of food—how much time has passed since I last ate a true meal? Not berries nor rations, but true food. Rabbit, vegetables and honey, oh, honey. My stomach growls again.

"I need to leave those things in the room, wherever it is, and bathe." I cast a suspecting glance at Burnbright. "When was the last time you bathed, girl? You ought to come with me and wash before the dinner. There is nothing like a bath to warm cold bones." I smirk, moving to the first serving girl I can find and making my request.

Heading upstairs, I ask Burnbright if she knows where are our rooms and move to one of them, leaving the majority of the supplies there. I hand over her share of rations and her new clothes. "Oooh, my shoulders are aching, hah. Listen, I will need to see this new knife of yours and the necklace." If any of my newer companions are in the room I add, "Later."

"Perfect. Thank you very much." I pick up the drum again, tucking it in the crook of one arm, and Líadan takes the cover and oil. "It's been a pleasure doing business with you. Have a lovely night."

I look around as we leave the shop and go to untie Llucheden. "We should get back to the Spear soon. Is there anything you need while we're out?"

Líadan shakes her head, taking the drum so my hand is free, and tucking my purchases into one of the saddlebags. "I just came to keep you company. I brought all I can think of that I'd need from- home."

The moment's pause between her last two words holds a pain I know too well. I pull her against me for a moment, then swing up into the saddle. Líadan mounts behind me and wraps her arms around my waist, and I turn back toward the inn. I can't think of anything else I need at the moment -- my armor is fine, I have plenty of clothes, and Líadan was kind enough to bring rations for two.

I walk Llucheden back through town and into the warm, dim, horsey-smelling stables of the Maiden's Spear. When we dismount, Líadan takes my drum and its case and oil from the saddlebag. "I'll take this to our room, if you'd like to stay a while with Llucheden. I don't doubt you miss each other."

"We'll be alright," I say, rubbing Llucheden's neck. "I'll be right behind you."

The stablehand shuts Llucheden into her stall, and I bid her a soft "Nos da" before turning to follow my lover.

I breath into my hands in a futile attempt to work some heat into them. The town appears to have risen from the scrap wood of Srilikind, somehow managing to erect a poor excuse of an inn. I make my way there, give a cursory glance of the common room, and find an empty seat.

Despite myself, I'm proud of my companions. They used logic in trusting me to survive alone, where they would require the strength of every member to make such a journey. Well, Baldhart came alone. I'll give her that.

I motion for the innkeeper to approach my table. The walk has carved out a hollow pit in my stomach. Finding the members can wait. They've probably squandered most of their time here on admiring shiny objects, or frilly clothing.

I am a few steps down the hall toward my room when I hear someone enter the common room, and turn back to see who it is. I cannot help but smile in relief when I see him, and call out a greeting as I walk to his table. "Good to see you survived!"

One cheap feel… and I got the discount I asked for? Oh, Nissa! Why didn't you stop me?

Why didn't you offer forty gold? He might have gone for it.

Nissa!

I don't like the way he 'measured' you, but…

"Thank you for fitting me," I tell the smith as I put my leather back on. As I wrap up in my cloak, I exit saying, "I'll see you in the morning." I give him a smile, as if there are no feelings of shame or disgust.

* * *

But by the time I get to Mauve, I'm trying to contain my laughter.

A giggle escapes as I tell Mauve, "I got a great price on a new breast plate!"

Emphasis on 'breast.'

I giggle again. Dammit, Nissa!

((Can this conversation take place in her Crow room?))

I look at her and laugh. "It felt good, didn't it? It is a quite harmless game that leaves an empowering feeling after you win." I tap lightly on her shoulder, grinning. "And it seems you loved the game."

Shuffling through the contents of my backpack, I locate the dress. I put at the side of the mirror and comb I've already separated.

Aliron and Bressel return from the shop walking in Aliron steps in and to one side to allow Bressel to enter, as he scans the room.
Bressel enters and heads for the stairs.

Aliron's eyes stop on a familiar face standing alone, without any change of expression he continues to check the people. Looking for any hostility or dangerous looking people.
No lynch mob secretly forming. No groups getting drunk to cause trouble...yet.

Aliron moves silently over to Ankari,
"Excuse me sir, are you new here? Theres been some confusion in the town, might you be looking for trouble?" Aliron asks not loudly but not whispered either.
Bressel(not knowing Ankari) slowly slips his axe off his shoulder while ordering an ale.

((Yeah, anywhere's good. Baldy's done shopping.))

"Well… I should probably feel ashamed of myself, but… I'm not used to a man looking at me like that. I made him sweat. I've never done that to a man before. I don't think I want to again." I laugh. "It did feel good to be wanted for once."

I wear the silver symbol of Brynhild now. None of that when I'm wearing this.

I see what Mauve has… "Is that a dress, Mauve? Are you going to actually wear—?" New clothes! That reminds me. "Say, Mauve… assuming your clothing is warm enough, and Branwen's too, mind if I wear the ring? It's not easy to find a dress in my size, and honestly… I think I like the way I look in this. I can't pull off men's trousers the way you do. I—I mean… pull off the look. If I wear clothes for a man, I'll be mistaken for one.

"I hate it when that happens."

I laugh again. "I understand you. I did not believe I could still make men sway after... scars and everything." Taking off the ring, I return it to her, "Yes, it is a dress. I do not want to attract unwanted attention for my oddities in this kind of village, if you understand what I mean. I will not be too cold now, I bought another cloak, so Branwen can keep mine while we are near people. Just in case."

Grinning, I show her a snatchel then empty it, revealing a doll. "Branwen. I have also bought a good amount of meat for her, to be complemented with fresher meat and some vegetables from rations. Burnbright's food has been taken care of as well." I sigh. "I still have to rent a room, I think. After dining and discussing our next step I will take a nap. I am exhausted. Can you wake me up before midnight, please?"

"Of course. Oh! And I forgot to tell you… there's a reason I wanted to use the bath so badly.

((Besides getting the bath before Cadell and Liadan did! Haw! <=[jerk-laugh]))

"I wanted to make sure this wasn't a place where an attendant might see you. I haven't noticed any new wounds, but I was worried you might have grown a tail or…" Too blunt. "…sorry. I just meant I feared, when you said you ate a berry, there might be something about you that a stranger will notice before I do.

"Anyway, you should speak to Aga about getting a hot bath ready for you after we eat. Speaking of, are you ready? Are you wearing the dress to dinner?"

"I might have grow one and do not know yet," I tease her. "You thought right, I did not only got hurt, it happened again. I not only want to desperately get rid of all this dirt, I need to verify if nothing else abnormal happened as well." I show her the mirror. "My newest companion, hah."

"Thank you. But I am still angry at you," I grin. "I asked... someone to get my bath ready. I want to bathe before dining. Oh, meanwhile, can you ask to some serving girl prepare rare meat for Branwen? Maybe a little bread and some vegetables pieces."

I get bored sitting in my room reading over and old book that was sitting in the drawer as in my room, It was certainly no exciting adventure or interesting facts, More like a bland story of 2 lovers. I look around the room desperately trying to find something else to do, I need to keep my mind off of the sacrifice Im going to have to commit soon.
It's not worth it, You will never be able to bring yourself to kill the beast, An orc, troll , a human even, But not a magical creature, They seem so elegant and enchanting.
I stop looking for anything and begin to pace aimlessly in circles.
Your just going to have to man up, The overall prize is much greater and worthy than te life of one beast, Think of the power you could have, You never know, It may well come in handy at some point.

I battle back and forth in my head for another short while before sitting back down and condemning myself to the terrible literature supplied by the tavern.

I make it back to Baldart's room, but choose not to get involved int eh discussion at the moment. Instead, i walk to a corner and set down my load, then try to charm the berry:

Goodberry[1d20+2] = 1+2 = 3

Yikes. Lucky i only tried to get one. Why is my magic so weak around here?

"Mauve, have you had any problems... with you know what?" i ask, waving a hand in the air vaguely. I tuck the berry back in the bag, and start organizing the branches i have gathered, as well as the grass, trying to examine which ones would be the best to make into weapons:

Observe[1d20+0] = 3+0 = 3

I groan and clap my hands over my eyes, rubbing at my face furiously. Something is very wrong here... my magic keeps slipping, and now i can't focus well enough to tell a blade of grass from a branch!. What's going on?

I look at the wolf girl and chuckle. "How else do you think I got this eye?" Before she can pout or something I answer her properly, "Lately only once, but it was bad enough to have that undesired outcome. It is the reason Baldhart worried about me. However, it was not nearly as bad as when I first met them.

"I could not understand what happened, I just kept failing, falling way lower than my usual accuracy—do you keep track of... forget it, I do not think so. Anyway, I got my hands dirty the first time and I was terrified. It made no sense, it kept happening, then, suddenly, stopped. I have no idea of what made it stop."

Oh, but I have my suspicions. Thank you again, now-dead-ranger.

I nod, then try to focus on the branches again:

Glaaaaaare![1d20+0] = 11+0 = 11
((Okay, seriously what happened?))

I swear i look like I'm about to blow up in everyone's faces, i am so pissed off. To try and calm down, i suck in a huge breath and walk over to the window. Fingertips tapping the sill.

Batos notices my anger through the link and i feel his concern radiating towards me. It is not often that i get enraged.

"Ugh, could someone examine those branches to see if any are suitable to make into bows or staffs? I'd like to make us a few more weapons and apparently i just can't focus at the moment. Maybe it's because we are in town . . ." i ask, then look out towards the forest. Maybe i should stay out there instead.

"Oh, I hope you're not really still mad at me, Mauve. I haven't been this happy in some time. I'm really having fun, and Gisla and Aga are wonderful. And you made me very happy earlier when… huh?"

I see Keit try to turn a single Goodberry. Oh, no! Keitsumah? I let Mauve cheer her up first, then I approach.

"When Mother made Goodberries," I tell her, "She used to arrange eight in a circle, like this." I take eight Goodberries and arrange them. "She said eight is the magic number. She never tried to focus her magic on more than eight, and forbade me to eat more. I failed to take her advice once, and will never eat more than eight again." I notice there are 32 non-magic berries, so I make four circles. "You can try four times now. If you have enough magic for a fifth try, just take the un-turned and arrange them again. I can't help you with the actual magic, so I'll do what Mother always asked: stay out of the way."

((@Keit, roll 2d4. The number that comes up is the number of berries turned with each attempt. There's no d20 roll—never mind the confusion from earlier, as SP was thinking of how he used to run C&C games—you can't fail at this spell. You use 2 MP with each attempt, so I believe you have full MP and can make 4 attempts. I suggest rolz.org for better results.))

"Also, Keit, please join us for dinner. I'll get out in the woods and help you with berry-picking later. The more the merrier, right?"

I wait to see how she does with the berries before telling the ladies I'd like to head to the common room.

Bressel watches and bumps his ax handle as he reaches for the ale.
With a smile he begins bumping the axe handle to a beat, still watching Aliron, he begins to sing:
Lifeblood
(The group has the beat included the woman sings without)

(Unless something interupts he will sing it all, and finish with a long drink.)
Drink, for the wind blows cold and
Drink for The Wolf runs free.
Drink to the ships with the sails like wings and
Drink to the storm-tossed seas.

Drink to the lasting nights
and those who warm our beds.
Drink to the mead that warms our hearts
and the cold that clears our head.

Drink to the Allfather's Eye
for Odin's sons are we.
Drink to the World-Tree where he hung
and the Runes of Mystery.

Drink to the truth of steel
and blood that falls like rain.
Drink to Valhalla's golden walls
and to our kinsmen, slain.

Drink to the Glory-field
where a man embraces death, and
thank the gods that we live at all
with our joyous dying breath!

Drink for the wind blows cold and
Drink for the Wolf runs free
Drink to the ships with the sails like wings
for Odin's sons are we!

Aliron
Looks at Bressel with annoyance, checking the crowd as they stare at the warrior.

"We are only reluctantly accepted in town, be the eyes and ears for trouble, and don't let them know you are with us." He says only loud enough for Ankari to hear.

When the conversation is done, Aliron scowls at Ankari and backs away untrusting.
"Is there any drinking song you don't know?" Aliron asks as he returns.

Bressel: "I don't know."
