Dragon's Egg - Act III

Valar Lord
Aliron to Mauve:"We are counting on the diversion to help get us in."

"Mauve needs berries." I add, "No one to heal her if she is hurt. How many do you think you will need?"

((I always thank the roller when it betrays me. xD))

I slap my own forehead. "You're right! I thought about it but forgot to ask, ugh. I do not want to take too many, no more than five."

Valar Lord
Cadell

I nod and take a deep breath. "Right... standard battle formation, then? We'll have to adjust for our new comrades, though..."

[tough keeping up with posts, I mentioned the formation before:

I believe we should have Aliron in front (ranger if he is with us)
Then those in no metal armor, and finally the heavy metal thunder behind and or deepest in the woods from the sentrys. This is for silent movement, not for best defense.

"No more than eight. Mother said eight's the magic number. Eat more than that, and you'll… you'll wish you hadn't.

"You'll wish you listened to Mother."

Valar Lord
"You are too many to trust me eight berries. Give me up to five or I will throw the others back at you," I say impatiently and keep my hand in the air.

"Sorry. Yes… I wasn't debating the amount. Just reliving the worst three days of my childhood. And nights. Especially the nights. Please, take your five and go, and be very careful, Mauve. But really, if you eat them all, don't eat more than three until another day. You will hate yourself. A lot."

"Lets make sure we know what we're doing, its silent movement once we reach the sea."
I will lead and if ranger meets us he will be upfront, we will kill anything as quickly and quietly as possible.
unarmored or leather armor people follow us, then metal armor bring up the rear, maybe even further into the woods then us, distance will muffle metal sounds."
We get to the sea as quietly as possible, Baldy and Brussel will swim to the boats, while the achers hide ready to cover the barbarians, caster if you have magic to aid in a fight at this time, use it. But primary is silence and trying not to be noticed."
Boats to a place out of sight, We make sure the boats stay put while they return to get the other boat.
Then we row out. About this time we will need the distraction to start, three boats on the open sea stands out.
We come in with boats straight behind the Crow.
Then I climb up drop down several ropes to allow several people to climb up at once.
At this time, if we are noticed, shoot the goblins, they have bows. The rest will not be able to harm us.
Nissa goes in, alerts them we are here.
We make entry into the Crow. From there we will decide what to do quickly so Nissa can tell Mauve.
Thats the plan as I understand it, any questions?"
May our gods bless us in this endevor and keep each of safe and as Bressel, said, last one in the Crow buys." Aliron nods towards Bressel.
Bressel
"You would agree, you're first up the cliff." He grins showing his dark stained teeth.

I laugh. "I will keep this in mind." Stuffing the berries in my pouch, I turn my back to them. "Great. Do not die. I see you all soon."

How am I supposed to be furtive with all these eyes on my back?

((Not bad, yet possibly not enough for a mage.))

I walk around Srilkind towards the sea, seeking the cover of the eastern forest until I reach the cliff.

"Alin, one thing I want to add. When the ropes drop, I climb first. I want to try to get Nissa inside while we're climbing. Bressel, climb beside me if you want to see Nissa appear. Anyway, you should come up with me since you and I can pull others up easily."

((@SP, do barbarians need a rope to climb the cliff? I know they can climb some cliffs without a check, but don't know if the ones here count—or if it's same as dangling rope: STR check, but only fall if fail by 5 pts. Since we have rope, it doesn't change the end result. Just want to know what my character can do without a rope.))

"So shall i use a bow primarily then? And should the need arise i will resort back to magic? It should be quieter and keep us all from a lot of nuisance, if we go loud i can always fall back on it."

"yes, yes, That seems smart."Aldar muttered to himself.
Then he starts walking towards the cliffs.
I need to find some money in this town somewhere, I need the money for spells and such.

The party makes its way to the sea, taking a path that allows them to keep to the trees, avoiding easy detection by the foe. The area of Srilkind near the Crow drops out of sight as the party moves to ground level with the village. Most of the buildings you can see are in ruin, some still smoking.

The sentries patrolling the outskirts of town can be seen. The forest growth is damp and cold, but the party is able to move with minimal noise, and given the distance of the nearest enemy, detection is not likely.

The land slopes toward the sea, and the party reaches the waters edge to the west of the docks, still hugging the tree line. The three boats are visible, the nearest one perhaps fifty yards away. A single dog-faced creature patrols the area around the docks, moving west and casting its gaze side to side, then stopping a dozen yards from the tree line and turning east, patrolling to where the road rises into Srilkind. To the party's left, a raised area of land forms a perimeter of the rocky beach near the docks. Atop that area of land, a goblin on warg-back appears momentarily, scanning its surroundings and then turning and disappearing from sight. This creature was seen by the scouts previously, and its patrol path takes it from the edge of the overlook above the docks to the perimeter of Srilkind and back.

The wind comes in cold off the sea, but the water is relatively calm here. You can see the ocean waves dashing against the rock of the cliffs below the Crow.

You see no sign of Ankari.

((The one dead horse in town was brown. No sign of other horses. Climbing the rock cliff will take a check, even for the barbarian. The climb is steep and cold, and salt spray makes the rocks wet.

PM coming to Mauve)).

I begin to strip. All I need to bring when I swim is my sword. Maybe I should've warned the new guys.

They won't complain.

I hope Mauve does her thing soon!

Mauve

You cast the spell, whispering your messages to the dog-face that patrols near the edge of the cliffs. There is a yelp of alarm, and then the creature begins running north, calling out to other sentries as he goes. You hear the answering calls of other sentries, some of which sound like goblins, as the footsteps of the sentry retreat.

The Party

As you watch from your hiding place, nothing happens for many minutes. Then there appears to be some sort of commotion coming from within the village. One of the dog-faced creatures appears a the top of the road leading down to the docks, yelling down to the sentry nearest you. The sentry growls something inaudible and begins running up the road, back toward Srilkind. The goblin on warg-back starts to head toward town as well, but the dog-face that came running from the village gestures for the goblin to remain where he is, and barks out a command. The goblin obeys, keeping his post high on the rise above the beach.

A couple of goblin sentries in the village itself break off and run toward the northeast, following the dog-face who was patrolling the beach. They are soon lost from view.

One goblin… better than many sentries. I whisper to Keit, "Would Batos take a rope in his mouth to tow a boat?" If yes, I tell Alin and Bressel in a low whisper, "One trip. Bressel gets the big boat."

If the boats disappear, maybe we're thought to be escaping villagers. If the goblin sees Batos, but doesn't get a good look at Bressel and I—who'll swim underwater as often as possible, maybe it looks like it's the work of his own team. Anyway, let's hope we don't get shot.

Unless given a reason not to, I swim out—with my blade and none else, underwater as often as possible without the need for a loud breath when I come up. I try to swim out of crossbow range, only making a move to shore from behing the first boat. My intent: cut the rope, and give Batos that boat, then I swim under the dock to the other little boat. I tow it back, covered by the boat until south enough to get by the small dock, then stay out of crossbow range and oft underwater.

"Use your best guess. If we are moving fast, don't use magic that slows you down. Quiet or quick is the key."

((We, ordinary mortals don't have the benefit of unlimited PMing. xD))

Stretching my neck, I check the effectiveness of my spell. I might have bought them some minutes at best. When I see no enemy near I warily pull myself up, staying with my chest over the edge to get a better view of what is happening in Srilkind.

I examine from the distance the building to the east of what would be Gefjon's temple, wondering if what was left of it is high and solid enough to hide me from our foes if I try to climb it. I peek at the dogs. Could I possibly make it to this building?

((What would be the distance between this building and the cliff?))

Bressel quickly sheds all equipment and clothes except his pants and scimitar.
He will swim underwater until he reaches the docks of the smaller boat coming up under the dock to get a breath and check for the sentry.
Then will swim under water out to the dock of the larger boat. Coming up under that dock, for a breath, check the sentry and wait for the guard to walk away for him to untie the boat.
He will slip back in the water(He only goes out as far as he needs too to untie), if the sentry has a short path to walk he will wrap the rope around the pole under the dock, to keep it from drifting away until hes ready.
When the sentry walks away again,(or if the other boats are moving, he will just move) Bressel will swim back towards the group with boat in tow.
Bressel has the farthest to go, so he won't probably have to wait for the other boats.

Aliron
postions himself so as to have a shot at the sentry if needed, but still close to the sea so as not to slow down the group.
If possible I will monitor the actions around town, where the majority of enemy is, how many could attack the group if an alarm went up.

[if possible Baltos gets the closest or furthest small boat? IMHO Baltos should get the closest, since there is a chance that the furthest could bump the other dock loudly if not controlled properly.]

Clarification…

[@Severin, Kiet and SP, Batos gets the closest boat. Baldy's needed to undo the rope for him, then she'll give him the rope. Also, she'll attempt to signal him, 'stay' then have him follow once her boat is moving. In that case, she can watch the sentry before moving her boat and attempt to get all three moving at once. (Or as close to at once as possible—but maybe close enough if one sentry and his back is turned.)

In the ideal situation, the sentry sees three boats moving. Barbarians can move boats from port side, which is away from shore when they head west. Likely, the goblin sees two boats drifting away, and maybe sees a wolf pulling away the other. What he'll make of that, I have no idea!

(Well, second-most ideal, ideal being the sentry's shoelace is undone, so by the time he turns around he sees no boats and wonders if there ever were boats. He looks east and says, nope. No boats. And never looks west.)]

I try to swim out of crossbow range, only making a move to shore from behind the first boat. My intent: cut the rope, and give Batos that boat, then I swim under the dock to the other little boat. I tow it back, covered by the boat until south enough to get by the small dock, then stay out of crossbow range and oft underwater.

I nod, giving Batos a wave as the wolf takes off after Baldart, clamping down his jaws around the rope. "Be careful." i say before they leave, both to Baldart and the others.

Baldhart, Bressel, and Batos enter the cold water, striking out toward the boats. Baldhart reaches the first small boat, untying it and giving the rope to Batos to hold in his mouth. When Baldhart gives him the 'stay' command he lets out a whine and his eyes turn toward Keitsumah, at the shore, but he swims in place for the moment.

By the time Baldhart swims to the second of the smaller boats, the goblin on warg-back has reached the edge of the overlook.

Goblin on Warg - Spot [1d20] = 13

The creature doesn't realize anything is amiss, and after a moment he turns and disappears again, patrolling in the other direction. No other enemies are within sight at the moment.

Bressel makes it to the large boat and manages to get it untied with little problem. With the boat untied, the force of the current pushing toward shore presses the boat against the docks. Bressel swims under water, rope in hand, then surfaces and tugs the boat along with him. The boat begins slowly to move along the dock in the direction Bressel wants to swim. The boat is heavy and it quickly becomes clear that movement will be slow. The sail is down and tied to the mast, luckily, so Bressel doesn't have to fight the wind.

Baldhart has nearly reached Batos by the time the goblin returns to the overlook again. Bressel has pulled his boat partially along the dock, though it is still a few feet from clearing it.

Goblin on Warg - Spot [1d20] = 13

Again the goblin notices nothing amiss.

Given the force of the sea pushing the larger boat toward shore, Bressel knows he's going to have to fight the thing as soon as it clears the dock, which is now pressed firmly against the side of the boat and preventing it from being pushed further toward the shore.
