Dragon's Egg - Act III

I nod as Baldhart answers my question. "I thought as much."

Mauve speaks, ending with a question; I let out a sigh and look to her, shaking my head. "I won't swim. I cannot."

"Are you sure? I remember that occasion when you went for a swim anyway." I almost smile at him before realizing he would get angry again or something, given how touchy he is lately. "Uh, forget it." I come closer to him and whisper.

I sigh and shake my head again, pushing back the memory. I'm not angry; if anything I'm on the embarrassed side. I should have looked before I leapt! "That was not one of my wiser moments."

She leans close to me, and I pause to listen, bending down to let her reach my ear a little easier. Being tall was never such an inconvenience at home... my old home. No, I will not think about that right now. I can't let it distract me further.

My eyes slide toward Mauve as she speaks, and I raise a brow, but my only response is a slow, silent nod.

I nod back and retrieve a case from my backpack, handing it over to him and whispering, "Please."

I take the case, tucking it into the crook of my left arm and holding onto it with my right. Why Mauve would want to keep such a valuable thing a secret, I can but guess. It seems to me something like this should be shared, not hidden away... but perhaps there is more to it that I do not know. The ways of wizards are strange to me. I may ask her about it later, when and if we get the chance, but I will not speak of it to the others.

There's just one problem... "I'm not sure this will fit in either of my packs. I do intend to fight, if it comes to that, and I will need my arms free to hold my sword and shield. How can I carry it?"

From your perch along the road, you command a good view of Srilkind. The perimeter patrols can be seen moving along their paths at the edge of town, though they are too far away for you to make out much detail. The group of monsters right outside the Crow can also be seen, though these are even more distant. The eyes of the elves provide greater detail than those of others - enough to make out the size differences between the goblins and the dog-faces who tower over them.

As the party plans, action at the Crow draws the eyes of the elves, who are able to better see what is happening in town. A group of three dog-faces, including the largest, move to within fifteen feet of the Crow's door. There is gesticulation from the leader, and you infer that he must be speaking. A moment later, the door to the Crow opens. In the doorway is a large figure with a smaller person in front of him. He holds a long knife in front of himself and the smaller person. There is gesticulation from the doorway as well, from both the larger and smaller figures. More talking, apparently.

The small figure reaches back into the doorway and pulls a backpack from the darkness, then tosses it a couple of feet forward. The pack hits the ground, rolls once, then lays still. Now the smaller figure is saying something, though no words are audible to you. The largest dog-face answers, and then the two figures in the doorway retreat back into the Crow and the door slams shut. The dog-faces look at each other and remain where they are, watching the door.

"Don't you say an elf tall as you carry backpack smaller than mine?" I raise an eyebrow.

"No, but mine are both already full of my own belongings. I don't particularly feel like leaving anything behind to make room."

I sigh. "I was about to suggest moving a few of my belongings to your pack to make room for that case in mine. Would that be alright by you?"

"Caaadell, decide it already!" I pout for a moment, then shake my head. "It will work, if you do not mind it getting wet. Can you find something not too heavy? I got some climbing to do."

I bite back a snappish retort -- I'm not the one who needs to decide. She was the one I asked for her opinion, not the other way around. "Líadan, could you...?"

Líadan

I open the lighter of his packs and take out a bundle of clothing, probably about three outfits' worth. I hand them to Mauve, then take back the case and fit it on top of Cadell's other belongings. "There, problem solved."

Aldar shakes his head and laughs.
"Perhaps there is something i could do to help? I feel a bit useless standing around doing nothing. I also have a 50ft silk rope should it be required. The plan looks fairly decent and the only thing is when sailing the smaller boat out from the harbour baldhart make sure its not too close to the pier otherwise any pursuers will be able to jump aboard. Is there anything required of me before we move out? "

"I think we just need to redistribute any extra bow. Who doesn't have a bow and can use one?

"Oh… and Mauve, when do you use your first distraction? Are you waiting for Nissa to fly over to you? You'll be seaside, on a cliffside, east of the Crow?—east being left on the map?"

Nihal

Valar Lord
"Thank you," I say to Cadell in a soft voice. Unable to shake that suspicion away, at least now I have one less worry.

"Aye, the left on your map," I answer Baldhart. "I will be there in twenty minutes after we part ways." If I don't something went wrong. "When you are ready to sail the boats, I can use the whisper and darkness. If one of them fail and the distraction seems to be vital Nissa can do her trick, otherwise she stays with me to keep them busy while in sneak in the Crow.

"Sounds good?"

Bressell:
"Aliron? you dog. You and the lady barbarian? Have a sweet...ah..." He looks at the short thief to the tall barbarian, then looks at Branwen and sees a talon."Sweet little girl." He forces out uncomfortably.

"I be a follower of Uller, I sadly am without a bow, after I stumbled and fell on me old one. if ye have one ta spare I am fairly good with it."

Aliron
"No. Bressell. This is Branwen, she is an elf harpy, we have cared for since we, faced her parents."

"I like the second option. Violence only if necessary. I wish we had an extra boat to leave for Mauve so she could escape at any time, rather then be dependant on us. But we just don't have enough boats to do that with and have the option to evacuate the people in the tavern."

"The ranger is out of sight again, so I guess he will do what he wants when he wants to do it."
[there will be room on the boats to start with so if Ankari wants he can pop in.]

To Mauve, I reply, "Okay… Nissa can fly from the Crow to Temple Gefjon within two minutes, and… are you sure you can make it alone, undetected? Like, as sure as you are about climbing trees?"

When Bressell and Alin speak, I stammer, "Oh—I would never—I mean, I'm a proper…

"You follow Ullr! So like me, you got some druid's blood in you. That or your clan converted centuries ago when we settled. But, really, who on the mountain doesn't have druid's blood? I think our people are stronger because of it.

"Do you ski? Oh… a talk for later. Si—er… Cadell, would you mind sparing your bow for Bressell? The Ullr-worshippers can't ski as well as they wish, but I bet even elven archers would be impressed with the marksmen from my mountain!"

"I would like to follow the oceans edge along to the docks, it meets with the least chance of being spotted or heard. Only the one patrol would need to be dealt with, the others could be timed so they would not notice. The fewer we have to fight, the fewer chances of an alarm being sounded."

"If we can leave the main group down near the ocean away from town and pick them up with the boats that would be even better. But I fear there might not be enough beach to do this with, and I do not want people not use to climbing to climb more then one cliff."

"Was that Burnbright in the doorway?" I ask after watching.

Bressel
"Burnbit? Thats the tavern wench girl with spirit, right? Ya think she can get me a drink, doesn't have ta be da good Irish stuff, heck, I'd even drink that elvish swill you drink Alion."
"Thats alot of blades down der."

"I am sure it will work," I come closer and whisper to her, "not about how long, but I will be close to the sea or the edge.

"I do not know if I will make it undetected, that's why I asked if the watchers were looking down. I believe, however, that even if they were at start they might be getting careless now. Everyone is ready?"

I nod and remove my quiver, handing my bow and arrows over to the barbarian. "Please be careful with these; I plan on using them again in time."
