((I love it when Baldy throws her weight around!))
((So do I but… so far, three feats of strength, and the d20 came up as a 1 or a 3 on every first attempt. I might be the new Ankari for this round. I never should have laughed at his guy falling out of the window. Time for my comeuppance!))

check for traps [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23
With a check to make sure the lever is trap free, I operate it if no trap.

[sorry, check for traps is Int, not dex. So remove +3, I still rolled a 20]

((Cadell: Outside
Matthew: Downstairs))

((Ah. Got my knights mixed up somehow.))

((Aliron: Downstairs (At least it looks like he went down, but that was after you posted) ))

((That's what I thought, too… since he was talking to Mauve in post #147. Which means he may have discovered the wrong lever—or the right one in the wrong room. ;) ))

Even with the two of you, the statue is so heavy that it can only be budged a little. Without the mechanism holding in place, it could easily crush a person.

"I suppose it will keep for now."

Hiljikki can't get an good look up the stairs from down in the room. The stairs are not walled, and are exposed to the room below. Once they pass through the ceiling, they appear to extend into upstairs corridors (this hold true for each of the two staircases). Nothing more can be seen from the vantage point below.

"Keep the pouch. I ask that you don't use it until we determine why it was stowed away in this temple. Come, let's go upstairs while we have some light. We can join the others after a quick look around"

"I shall do so."

I go upstairs to see if anything is of interest.

Likewise. He's more than welcome to take point.

((Hears sounds of improvisational redecorating emerging from below. Notices Ankari doesn't appear concerned. Calms Täplä, who is startled by hammering.))

"Is that, ah… normal… for your companions?"

The druid's presence is like a balm over burnt skin. If she sticks with us, I'll consider myself fortunate. Her deference to allow me to take point amuses me. She is as slight as a waif, yet has managed to survive. No doubt by letting the dumb muscle take lead.

"What? Oh, yes. Heated arguments, things crashing, Baldhart's hearty laugh and name-calling, is normal."

I turn my attention back to the stairs and the upcoming second level. This place holds secrets. I mean to find all of them before we go.

DetectTrap along the stairwell: [1d20+3] = 11+3 = 14

((once we are upstairs, I want to investigate thoroughly. Below is a roll for spotting a hidden compartment in the first room (if applicable) or the entire floor.))

Spot Hidden Doors: [1d20+3] = 5+3 = 8

"It was the things crashing I wondered about, mostly. The arguments and name-calling, in my experience, seem to be universal traits among thinking beings.

"The laughter is pleasant to hear, though."

((My put-the-statue-back-in-place roll may or may not have succeeded, but it doesn't seem to matter whether it's left tipped or upright, so I'm just going to RP as if we're all downstairs now…))

I walk over to Burnbright with my torch.

"It's not much for warmth, but would you like to hold this?"

She takes the torch, and I draw my sword.

"I prefer to have this in my hands. I still owe you a lesson on the sword, Burnbright. I'm glad we had our shopping day though. Arn did a great job on both of our new outfits."

Burnbright's such a tiny little thing that Arn went out of his way to make sure she got 25 gold's worth of leather. The studded shirt and skirt could pass for clothing, the girl is so well covered. Light enough that she can handle the weight, studded enough to offer better protection than my old armor, and just the right size for Burnbright to wear clothing both over and under the outfit.

I pray the girl can get out of whatever we're getting ourselves into unscathed. If anything happens to her, I don't know when my companions will speak of my pleasant, hearty laugh again… or if. Nissa, please ask Brynhild to guide this young—

Baldy! Don't be such a worry wart!

What kind of an answer to a prayer is that?

The kind you need to hear.

I watch as Burnbright almost lights her hair on fire while enjoying the bit of warmth offered by the torch.

I laugh—with her, not at, and she knows it.

"You're a real adventurer now," I tell her. "Come. Let us see what Aliron has found while I was playing with my hammer."

((Assuming the name-calling refers to Mauve's lovely vocabulary it might be interesting to know her voice is misleading. I don't know how to classify voices properly, but her timbre is low, the average tone sounding similar to a 14yo boy, lower ones like a flute and the higher more female-like. Think in oriental female singers, not in ocidental. Her voice is probably a step higher than Hiljikki's.

Since she hasn't speak for a while, raising her voice makes it break and sound hoarse, missing the higher range.))

Downstairs

Burnbright puts her crossbow away and takes the torch from Baldhart, grinning at Baldhart's comments. She studies Mauve for a moment, then says "Do you have an animal living on you too? The girl upstairs does. At least I think it's an animal. I only ever saw its face, and just for a second. Do you think its a pet? What if it's magic. Wouldn't that be bad?"

Baldhart dashes back upstairs to right the statute. It takes a lot more groaning and sweating to move it the opposite direction, but with enough perseverance she tilts it up and it comes to rest, upright, with a dull thud.

Aliron is manipulating the lever as Baldhart returns downstairs. When Aliron pulls it down, there is a soft click and a stone in the wall, about a foot tall by eight inches across, swivels slightly. It looks like pushing on it would rotate it further.

Burnbright takes a step closer, holding the torch higher, her eyes curious.

Upstairs

((Of the two staircases, we'll assume you took the one that is on the left as you are viewing the room from the entrance)).

Ankari satisfies himself that there are no traps, and heads up the stairs, Hiljikki just behind him. The stairs do form a corridor, at the end of which is an archway opening in a room to the left. Peering into the room you both see a small open area that may once have held chairs and other furniture, but is now littered with dust and debris. There are two wooden doors, one directly across from you and the other about ten feet to the left of it. They both appear to have been smashed in long ago. You can see very small rooms through the gaps in the battered wood of each. The wall to your left, the other side of which flanked the stairs as you came up, forms another corridor leading beyond this room into an open area beyond.

There is a glass-less window to your right, allowing cold air in. The sill is dusted with snow, some of which has also swirled onto the floor.

The stone swivels at the center, revealing a small space behind. There is a old, leather-bound volume there. The leather looks to have been treated against age and the elements, but even so its age is apparent. A leather strap around the volume holds it closed. There is an imprint across the front of the book in the shape of a large key. It looks like the object was bound there for a long time, forming an impression in the leather and darkening the material underneath. There is no sign of the key now.

The child's voice catches my attention.

"Animal living on me? Fleas?" I frown. "Face? You're making no sense. Uh, anyway, no I do not have animals, living on me or not. Also, you should not fear magic, it may be dangerous but not it's not evil."

I feel more at ease to talk to the child than to the others. "Speaking of danger, why are you here? This temple is no place for a child."

When Aliron moves the lever we both turn our eyes to him.

Burnbright frowns, then straightens her shoulders. "I'm an adventurer now. Baldhart said so. One of these days, I'm going to be a shieldmaiden, like they used to have in the old days. Like Veborg. And when I die the valkyries are going to come down to get me and people will sing songs about it!" Her cheeks and neck redden as she speaks.

Mauve notices the child has taken a beating recently. Her eyes are still blackened and the area around her nose is bruised, though the bruises are fading.

"I meant no offense, girl." I raise my hands to reinforce my words. "You surely looks prepared for an adventure, yet those lands can be truly dangerous, even to adventurers older and more experienced than you."

I keep casting some glances to Aliron and the book, not missing the mention to another journal. It's a pity I hadn't enough time to explore the place before they came in.

To Baldhart I say
"You should be glad it was locked away, otherwise it would not be here for us to read, it would have been stolen long ago."
And to Mauve and Burnbright I say.
"She's still not an Adventurer yet. She's with us to learn. To be trained. She's not yet prepared, but she will be in time. I'm sure of it."

For the benefit of the druid, ungifted with the ability to see by little light, I say, "we need to take advantage of what little daylight is left. Inspect the rooms down the hall, I'll look into this open area. Take a peak through the windows while you're looking. See if anything is on the horizon that may give us cause for concern."

I continue onto the large room and follow my own advice. If there is windows to look through, I'll examine the horizon.

((Regardless of what I find, I then examine the room))

Burnbright stops blushing but decides to keep her mouth closed. She looks a bit pouty at being told she's not an adventurer yet, but she doesn't challenge it.

Upstairs, Ankari peers out the window of the second-floor room. To the left, from his vantage point, it isn't far to the Taint, which stretches across the land like a shadow. The area behind the temple is mostly open space, giving way to sparse trees. Those trees thicken to the south, back toward Srilkind, and become twisted and stunted in growth toward the Taint.

Searching the large upstairs room reveals no hidden doors or compartments.

I kneel down and look Burnbright in the eye. "Don't be upset," I tell her. "Mauve and Sir Matthew only mean to say that you have more to learn. That statement applies to everyone here. Even Cadell is still learning, and he's hundreds of years old if not thousands."

Even after our mortal lives, we continue to learn.

"Even in death, Burnbright. Even the valkyries still learn when they watch over us, and each died doing something great."

It wasn't that great, Baldy.

Nissa, you don't have to be modest with me! Surely, you've done something great.

I'm doing it now.

The girl's reaction brings a small, warm smile to my face. She reminds me of another spirited child, although I'm not sure of whom.

"There is no need to hurry, you're going to have your chance to prove your worth. However, you must be cautious now so this day can come." I speak gently.

They suspect of a curse and what do they do? Bring a child along on their quest! Brilliant.

"My name is Mauve. Who are you?" I pause for a moment, then add, "You've got some... different friends. What exactly you came to do there?"

She's probably my best chance of getting some honest information.

((Oh, ff--. Removed some piece about Mauve coming closer to Burnbright now Baldhart is at her side. Ninja! ;<))
