The lizard is torn apart there on the rock, blood spraying wildly to each side as the wolf vigorously shakes his head.
Nearby, Cadell gets another good shot in, and this time the lizard drops its axe and clutches at the wound. It collapses to the ground, breathing shallow breaths.
Liadan kneels over Mauve, sending her healing magic flowing into her fallen companion. Mauve comes to, first recognizing the sound of the battle that still rages around her, then opening her eyes to see Liadan's face.
((Mauve has 3 HP))
Darin continues his melee with the large reptile before him. He brings his hammer down, hoping to bash the thing's skull:
The axe catches Darin in the torso, then twists upward, the flat of the blade catching him just beneath the chin as the strange glowing hammer lashes out again:
The glowing hammer misses, primarily because the dwarf goes stiff, then crumples into a heap just as it swings. The glowing hammer winks out of existence.
Keeping his shield at the ready, Matthew drive his spear forward again, but misses. The large lizard he faces counters:
It's a feint, and as Matthew moves to parry the lizard's axe catches him across the side. Both smaller lizards loose their bolts at Matthew at the same time:
One of the bolts drives into Matthew, the other passing harmlessly behind the night and just a few inches from where Liadan kneels.
((9 total HP to Matthew))
As the battle rages, Aliron moves from his position and executes a swift but nimble charge at Calexa, driving his sword deep into her body. Calexa screams and tries to twist to face this new threat. She swings the bulk of her serpent like tail portion at the dwarf with the swiftness one expects of a snake:
Aliron is too quick for her, and he ducks under the tail. Ankari takes the opportunity to attack Calexa from the front, but her thick hide turns his axe away.
Baldhart-Nissa attacks again, using all of her strength to drive her sword at the serpent-witch:
Again Calexa screams. Blood pours from numerous wounds on her body and she casts her gaze frantically aroud the battlefield, assessing the situation. Making motions again with her lower hands, she traces out the complex movements of a spell and utters the corresponding incantation:
For a moment, a glow of energy appears around Calexa. But before it can solidify, it begings to unravel. She repeats the words and hand gestures swifty, trying to regain control of the energy:
When the energy dissipates, Calexa's body shudders, her mouth drooping downward on one side. "No!" she cries out "No, no, no, no, no!" She casts a quick glance over her shoulder to the edge of the rocky island-top on which you all fight.
Agony lances through me again as another lizard's arrow finds its mark. I sway, but remain standing. Pain is just a message. Messages can be ignored.
I focus on the foe before me, and lash out once again.
My attacks have grown worse and worse. The pain is getting to be too much. How much strength do I have left in me?
Cadell
My foe goes down, bleeding and soon to die. I leave it be, looking around for anywhere else I might be of use. Others are occupied with Calexa or the other lizards, and - ai! Darin is down! I run to him and kneel at his side, hissing as I see the bloody wound in his torso. I lay my hand on it, remembering the only spell I know. Can I control it this time? Will it be enough to help?
"No-!" The blue glow dissipates without effect, just as it did before, taking my energy with it. I grit my teeth, then rise and ready my sword and shield, locking eyes with the nearest lizard still standing. If I cannot heal Darin, I will guard him with my life.
LÃadan
I sigh as my spell takes effect, and Mauve regains consciousness. I take her hand and gently set her on her feet again. "Up you get, dear."
I take quick stock of my surroundings, wondering who to heal next. Matthew is wounded, but still on his feet; Darin lies in a heap on the floor, with Cadell nearby, guarding him. No thought of Darin's race crosses my mind as I run to him, kneel and ready to cast a spell of my own. He is a friend of Cadell's, an ally in need, and that is good enough for me.
Not my best, but I hope it will suffice for the moment.
[if her back is to me, the attack is +4 and double damage (8damage). If not I will hit and move trying to get behind her again. If she follows me, the others will get an easier attack on her. Their normal damage is as good as my backstab. As long as she faces me I will strike and move/dodge]
"Stings alittle don't it! Tell me how it feels to know your death is coming at the hands of common humanoids?"
"I will be sure to piss on your shrine, much like you and lizards pissed on the dwarves sacred grounds!"
"Face me, the warriors hack at your back, face them, I plunge my sword deep in your ass! You won't even be buried in grass.
The wolf eats well tonight on your nasty carcass."
[taunting for her attention and intimidation]
"Everyone beat on her, before the coward has a chance to run! Runaway you pathetic creature. Cower in a hole until you can sneak back out and lick your festering wounds!"
Not the said cold of the death, but it's still cold. Did I lose this much blood? I open my eyes to stare at an unfamiliar face looming over me.
Oh, the elf.
She said something comforting to me, I think, and I nod in response to whatever she said, putting my weight on my elbows. My clothes are drenched in blood and that's why it's cold: I'm wet in a freezing place. The elf is gone to help someone else. Using the spear as a cane I get up, ignoring the throbbing pain on my shoulder and looking over the battle. Chuckling, I realize the witch failed a spell. A bit of justice, at last!
However, she's nervous. I realize something else and it's not good for us. A magical failure can be very lively and it has no loyalty.
"Watch out!" I croak to the others, turning my head around. I should get the little harpy and run away, but how far would we make before getting caught? After what I've done no pleasant fate awaits me at those lizard's hands.
Anger grows in my chest making it even harder to breath when I realize I'm out of options, again. I move warily past Matthew, crouching a little, getting to the side of the lizard he's engaged, the one who almost killed me. If the knight falls I'm a likely next target.
I can't believe I'm doing this.
I get in the right stance, thrusting my spear at the lizard.
((Not that will matter now, but, hopefully, it's a flank attack, so, +1 here. And I've written " DIE! >.<' " =P))
"Batos, Attack!" I command the wolf as he finishes off the last of the lizards on our right side, jabbing my staff in Matthew's direction. The wolf takes off to assist the knight:
But it's going to be a few seconds before he can get there. With everyone bobbing and weaving, he struggles to get through without tripping anyone or getting struck accidentally. I turn my attention to where Cadell has placed himself over Darin, blood pooling around them. I'm not sure if i have enough energy to heal him, but maybe just enough to seal the wound and preserve his life long enough for me to get him some berries.
"Cadell!" i call, giving him a heads-up as i kneel beside Darin, spreading my hands over the dwarf's chest and muttering a rushed spell, my fear making the magic crackle and spark:
Seal the Wound![1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14
((I understand that First Aid doesn't heal, but that is a very big wound, so i figured to make sure it's fully stitched up or at least stops bleeding.))
I feel drained and weak after this last spell escapes my hands and into Darin, and I try to revive him by patting his face, now white with bloodloss. "Darin. It's me, Keit. Open your mouth so i can give you some good-berries."
((I understand now. The dice sites also function as a provider of moral ingraining. They sense my character is an arrogant ass, so humiliate him with low rolls.))
((Well, I had a map and Photoshop crashed on me. I don't think we'll need one for reasons you'll see below, though, so I'm going to just go ahead and post it! )).
The battle atop the strange stone island continues. Matthew keeps himself firmly behind his shield, jabbing his spear at the lizard before him:
The attack misses, and the lizard dances back, preparing for its counter-attack. Before it can slash at Matthew with its axe, Mauve steps alongside the knight, thrusting her own spear at the foe. Her weapon punches into the lizard's gut and slashes sideways. The creature drops its axe, falling to one knee and clutching at the wound, trying to keep its entrails within its hide.
Cadell make his way to Darin, kneeling beside the dwarf. He attempts a healing spell, but the energy is too ephemeral, hard to grasp. It sizzles out of existence before it can do any good.
Then Liadan and Keitsumah are next to Darin as well, both channeling their own healing powers into the dwarf. Darin's bleeding stops and his breathing becomes more steady, though he does not wake.
Batos dashes across the rocky surface, heading for the knight and the remaining lizards.
Calexa seems enraged almost to the point of being irrational (if indeed she was ever possessed of much reason). Ankari slashes at her, but her writhing movements won't let him get a solid shot to penetrate her scales.
Another solid blow, spraying blood and scale into the air. Calexa's face looks pale and drawn. Even as she starts to move forward, Aliron comes in with an attack of his own.
Calexa lets out an agonizing scream, echoing off the cavern walls and causing the two smaller lizards to drop their crossbows. The serpent-witch looks to be on the verge of collapse, but she is not done yet. She surges forward between Darin and Cadell, her torso twisting to fix a hateful eye on Baldhart. Her hands move again, and she speaks in a quick whispers.
The surge of energy builds around Calexa, immediately causing the hair of those around her to stand on end, as though caught near a lightning storm. Calexa's grin widens, fixed on Baldhart.
"Hear me my Lady! I have done as you asked! Now, grant me the power for victory!"
With that, she pulls the spell energy into herself, shaping it into a a long column of swirling light:
The column starts to break apart, it's light running down Calexa's arms toward her torso. She writhes and screams "No!" The energy twists around her body and try as she might, she can't seem to get a handle on it. Then she looks to the ceiling and yells:
"If I am to die, then let me take my foe with me!"
The runaway magic forms a bright concentration of light near Calexa's torso. As she loses her hold on it, the energy explodes outward in all direction, blue turning to red as it streaks away from her, the boundary of the magical discharge erupting into a burning sphere of flame.
The fire sears through both of the large reptiles, and they fall to the ground with gagging hisses. One of the smaller lizards, too, is caught up in the discharge and burns to death before it hits the ground. The other smaller lizard leaps at the rocky perimeter of the island and huddles tight against it.
Branwen lets out a high-pitched shriek as the flame reaches her, throwing herself backwards onto the hard surface where the rolls over twice, then lays still.
The flame burns Calexa too, and her raised torso falls face-forward to the ground where she lays motionless, her breath wheezing, her eyes closed.
((In the sphere of runaway magic are: Ankari, Cadell, Keitsumah, Baldhart, Mauve, Matthew, Darin, Batos, and Liadan. DEX saves are needed due to the rapid expansion of flame into the area. If you make your save, you take 4 HP as you scramble away from the blast. If you miss your save, you take 8 HP. DC for the save is just +1, so if you have DEX prime you need a 13, if it is not prime you need a 19. Batos is treated as having DEX prime.
Aliron is at the edge of the blast, the flames warming him nicely but doing no damage)).
When the burning sphere fades, a wisp of energy remains near Calexa, swirling softly to form a vortex. The energy is dark, and a vague form begins to take shape within. Burning eyes and the outline of distorted humanoid limbs are visible. Whatever forms there remains motionless as its body congeals, it's horrible eyes fixed on Calexa.
I smile as Mauve finishes the lizard I had faced, and watch in awe and horror as Calexa is beaten down, blow by blow. Her magic fails, but the runaway is devastating. As flames threaten to engulf us, I scramble out of the way.
The pain of my many wounds multiplies, sending me staggering to the floor. I feel a searing pain, then nothing.
((I guess prime doesn't really matter with a roll like that. Matthew is down to -5 HP.))
Cadell
Calexa falls, and her runaway magic threatens to take the rest of us with her. I leap to avoid a burning death.
((...oooh, run for your life!
DEX is prime, so Cadell makes it by a wide margin, but he's down to 12 HP.))
LÃadan
Darin still doesn't wake, despite my efforts and Keit's combined. I keep my hand on him and try another spell.
Worse than my last attempt! So much for me being a great healer!
Calexa falls, with devastating results. Cadell leaps to avoid the flame. I take Darin under the shoulders, trying to lift him*. Maybe I can get him to safety.
I stumble, and searing pain overwhelms me, dropping me to my knees as I cry out in anguish.
((If I'm not allowed to make two checks per turn, kindly disregard her attempt to lift Darin. It was added as an afterthought -- I figured someone should try to help the dwarf, otherwise he might not make it!
*The lifting attempt in my previous post assumes Darin is still unconscious, or at least unable to stand or walk on his own.))
My wicked grin at Calexa's latest failure vanishes when her failed spell expands into my direction. I raise my arms, protecting my head and attempt to throw myself away from the wild energy; my effort being to no avail. I get caught in it, letting out a yelp before collapsing.
((*sigh* Thanks, dice. -5hp now. You should have ran away, silly Mauve!
@Ireth, saves works like attribute checks: You add the character's lvl + the modifier if there is one. Also, carrying Darin is a check, so, her level should go there. =P))
Ready to impale my target again, suddenly she charges away from me, I stand stunned as her body explodes in flames.
Suddenly everything goes in slow motion, lizards leap away from the flames, everyone trying to dodge the flames, alot don't succeed.
My friends dive to avoid the flames, some don't move when they land, the first two to register, Mauve and Branwen are down unmoving, Where is Baldhart? I don't see her.
The healer lives, the dwarf doesn't look good, Cadell is up, Mathew is unmoving, I don't see the Ranger yet, He and Baldhart were in close combat with the snake woman.
I look quickly to the enemy, any lizard that moves I will dispatch quickly, although I believe they parished in the flames.
My weapon drop suddenly heavy in my hand.
Go to the child. No she is not humankind. I must check Mauve and look for Baldhart, then I will check branwen. Although I fear she has found her parents.
Only my extreme paranoia keeps the blade in my hand as I rush to Mauve.
"I am no healer, Mauve. I will bind your wounds until the healer can get to you." I will try to stop any bleeding. (never learned the magic first aid, it would be handy now.) and continue to look for Baldhart.
Trying not to look at the bird child, but hoping to see movement.
I cry out as fire bursts into life just in front of my face, terror unlike anything i have ever known locking my body in place.
"Keitsumah! Run!" My brother yells, bowling into me as i stare at our home going up in flames. The trees groan and crumble around us, their emerald leaves consumed in blood-red tongues. I can't see anything but red and black, smoke and flame. Not even the blinding silver gaze of my brother snaps me out of my sudden petrified state.
My back hits the ground, and pain registers as the elven knight dumps me into a stream, laying my head in a shallow pool so i won't drown. Sweat pours down his face, and I watch with a strange numbness as i see the angry red flesh on his temple split and bleed. He's been burned.
"I'll get them. I promise . . ." he panted, turning and running back into the blaze . . .
It was the last time i ever saw him.
Batos howls close by, running towards me, and I realize then that again, i can't run.
Fire swirls in an angry mass around me, closing in with burning fangs, but a white blur shoots over my body, knocking me flat as the wolf stands over me to try and protect me. Batos snarls at the runaway magic as if it's a living thing, refusing to leave my side. A choked sob escapes me, and i bury my face in his bloodied chest, quivering as the roar of the flames fills my ears.
Protect! [1d20+3] = 19+3 = 22 ((This is Batos trying to shield her from the flames. As he didn't run, he will take the full brunt of the damage to himself. Thank goodness he didn't take any in the fight lol ))
I escape the worst of the blaze, but LÃadan screams from behind me. I rush back to her side, relieved to see that she is at least still conscious. "LÃadan!"
LÃadan
I look up as Cadell comes back to me, and shakily take his hand, allowing him to pull me to my feet. My back screams in pain, but I am not ablaze. I lean on him for a moment, shivering, then look around at my companions.
Mauve, Darin, Baldhart and Matthew all lie without moving. I go to Darin first -- he was worst wounded when the blaze hit. He is pale and still, his hands still wrapped around his axe. I kneel and lean in close, searching for a pulse or a breath, calling his name. "Darin!"
He does not respond, and there is no sign of his vitals. I take a shaky breath, bowing my head and clenching my hands. If my spells had been stronger, perhaps I could have saved him.
Cadell
LÃadan moves to check on Darin, and I follow. My throat constricts when she lowers her head. I reach out and lay a hand on her shoulder. She does not speak, but turns to me and slowly shakes her head.
I release the breath I hadn't realized I held, and bow my head as well. But a swirl of movement draws my gaze. I look toward Calexa's corpse; near it, a black, smoky figure takes on a humanoid form, its blazing eyes fixed on the dead snake-creature. I dare not sheathe my sword yet -- what if this is another foe we must fight before all this is over? So few of us are left standing... can we defeat it ourselves?
LÃadan
Heavy-hearted, I turn from the dead to tend to the living. I have not much energy left; first aid is all I can give anyone, and only three people at most. I look to those nearest me: Mauve, Matthew and Baldhart. All are unconscious, but none are in immediate danger of dying. Regaining the maximum ability to cast will take long enough as it is; I should preserve what little I have left, just in case we need it.
And it seems as though we will. Something is quickly taking shape near Calexa's corpse. I stay close to Cadell, but lean a little closer to look. What is happening here?
Whatever it is, I can make neither heads nor tails of it.
In the aftermath of the sorcerous explosion, the battleground goes eerily silent. Mauve is down and not moving. So, too are Branwen and Darin. Keitsumah lies still as well, Batos standing protectively over her, his fine coat trailing wisps of smoke.
As the last wisps of magical energy clear away, Baldhart can also be seen, motionless on the unyielding stone floor.
A single small lizard huddles against the rocks, its weapon gone, its fearful gaze sweeping across the carnage. When the heat of the blast retreats, the cold air follows it and with it comes the scent of cooked flesh, lizard and otherwise.
The area around the vortex continues to solidify and take form. The creature that coalesces there is like something from a nightmare vision. Seven feet tall it stands, black as the night, and vaguely humanoid. The creature is unclothed and quite obviously male. It's limbs are bent at strange angles and sharp spines protrude from the elbows and knees. A short tail extends from the creature's hindquarters, and its over-sized hands terminate in long, vicious claws.
The creature glances both left and right, then moves toward Calexa and, consequently, toward any party members that are fallen near her, as well as those tending to them. ((The party members in the area are Baldhart, Mauve, Cadell, Liadan, Keitsumah, Matthew, and Darin))
For Calexa's part, she has not awakened and her breathing remains shallow.
