Dragon's Egg - Act II

((The formation Baldy suggested is shields in front, archers closest to flank. With Aliron on the right of the west-facing formation, he can open the cage from his position if the formation is aligned with the cage. Baldy is at the center of this two-rank formation, so assuming everyone is in it, she can be heard easily.))

"We can stay like this," I whisper, "or split with two shields to either side of the entry way—as if the shield wall extends the corridor—Rydh and I each behind a pair of shields, Mauve behind me, archers hidden—perhaps by the cage. If they don't see us as they enter, we catch 'em from both sides. If they get past our shields, Aliron and Ankari can put arrows or blades in their backs.

"In a word, stay like this or split?"

((Baldy will not respond verbally, but will go along with whatever formation is chosen by the next party member to respond.))

Aliron kneels in front of the cage and gets out his lock picking tools. The wolf growls low in its throat and moves protectively between the front of the cage and Keit.

Aliron Lock Pick [1d20+3] = 3+3 = 6

Unfortunately, the attempt at lock picking fails. Aliron probes the inside of the lock for a full minute before giving the task up.

As the party considers its next move, still standing in formation, a sound emanates from the darkened corridor. It is a soft, feminine sound, like a distant voice on the wind. It grows in volume until a haunting melody fills the room, carried by a soft, beautiful voice. For a moment, everyone pauses as the song fills them with a sense of loss, but also love and hope. Arm and neck hairs stand on end.

((Need a CHA save from everyone)).

As Aliron is probing the door, I bend bars in the next wall of the cage. "Girl, I'm getting you outta there!"

As I move back into formation, I hear another girl. Her voice… so beautiful!

((PRIME

EDITED to reflect what I said in the welcome thread, that Baldhart would observe Aliron, and bend bars when failure seems apparent. She had a full minute to do that. Up to GM if that happened, or if just the CHA save counts.))

((One note - I don't have the character sheets in front of me, so with your save indicate whether CHA is Prime for you :) )).

I freeze at the eerie, beautiful sound that fills the chamber, feeling my neck prickle and goosebumps crawl up my arms. I look toward it, holding my breath in awe. Who is the singer, and what does this mean?

EDIT: Cadell gets a +10 bonus, so his roll is 1D20+1+10=24.

((CHA is a Prime, if that helps.))

Music? What the...

My arms drop, no longer keeping the spear positioned defensively in front of me. Everything is banished from my mind, I feel things I've not felt for a long time. There is a small ache filling my chest, but it's a good ache, it's the longing for a sweet time that won't come back. Perhaps, it will. Everything will be fixed, and I'll go back to home, and my family will be there, everyone, happy, safe and sound.

I smile, moisture glistening in my eyes.

((Not a prime. Forgot to add level, but it doesn't matter. :D))

The haunting melody immediately grabs my attention, and I clap my hands over my ears, shrinking back into the cage. A tremor runs down my spine and i look towards the hallway, horror creeping up my spine.

[1d20+0]= 19 (Add ten to that so it's 29)

Batos throws his head back and releases a mournful howl, rising to a high pitch and then lilting to a lower one in the haunting melody. It snaps me out of my reverie and i scramble out of the cage, positioning myself so i'm not in anyone's way but not in immediate danger of being harmed.

Battle-stance, Batos. I tell him through our link, and the wolf's howl cuts off sharply as he crouches, hackles raised. His feral blue eyes search the darkness, and his nostrils quiver as he tries to locate the enemy.

((Keit, you get a +10 bonus to your roll since your character is an elf. Not that you seem to need it with a base roll like that! :D))

Algernon, being the friendly, outgoing sort of barbarian he is, doesn't even consider "resisting":

embed

Instead, he gets an even goofier-than-normal grin on his face, allows his hammer to dangle from its wrist strap, raises his arm over his head, waves wildly, and booms out a "Hello!" as loud as the first one you heard, ere you met him, must have been.

•

((P.S. Since that was both a natural and a modified 1, I'm guessing it really isn't going to matter a whole lot whether Cha is a prime for Algernon… it ain't.))

Sorry, was in Kentucky all day yesterday and just got to computer today.
The lockpick sounds like something I would roll. (even with +3 I don't think it mattered)
Chr check:

I read the check was +10, my chr modifier is -1

When I fail I move out to find a good place to hide and still be able to see the direction of the noise. I hold my bow with arrow ready.

"I think the bard could play some tune to conteract the music they sing, where is the bard? I think I heard candle wax in the ears might help those that aren't use to these beeches singing, if anyone has some."

"WAIT! Don't open the cage! Maybe she is one of them, with an illusion to hide her true nature?"
Then after a moment of thought, "But I don't think they have control over animals... I don't trust anyone at first, so I will leave it up to you all."

I look over at Aliron when he speaks. "He ran off as soon as we reunited on this side of the lake. I wasn't fast enough to stop him."

I turn and raise my eyebrows at the man who had believed me to want to harm them. The notion was so far-fetched that it takes several seconds for me to recover my thoughts.
"I don't sing." i say simply, taking up my quarterstaff and facing the door. My face burns uncomfortably and i pull my hood up to cast my face into shadow. Great. Well, let's put a light on.

[1d20+3]= 17

The light emanating from my necklace pulses and grows brighter until I stand in the center of a lighted area -the radius roughly ten feet all around me.

"I'll stand in the center, so you can all see." I mumble, moving into position.

I whisper to Mauve, "This song… is it magic? What does it…" Oh, no! "Mauve?"

Keit moves into the room and casts her spell. Hmm… maybe an elf can handle whatever this is. I put my hand on Sir Cadell's shoulder to get his attention. Hopefully a look, a nod… hopefully that's enough to tell him I'm alright without making that public.

((Is CHA a prime for Aliron? If not, I believe he is charmed… or is the song a lullaby?))

I look over my shoulder at Baldhart when she catches my attention. Seeing the worry in her face, having heard her whispered fear, I simply nod.

As I move into formatation we all hear someone sing. I try to resist it's affects, but . . .
((Prime))

Resistence is futile

The smell of unwashed bodies announce the presence of company ahead. That one is the odor of a wolf too long from the cleansing environs of his natural habitat, raises my hackles. Entering the room, I see the druid and wolf imprisoned in a cave. I watch as those more capable than me do what they can to free the pair.

The druid's presence is welcomed, but surprising. Two druids in as many days, this one captured. As a mull over the mystery, I hear music float like poisonous spores into our room, eager to take root in our ears. We are expected.

CHA (Not Prime): [1d20+11] = 18+11 = 29

The tensions leaves the wizard's face as the music subverts her will and beckons her. Too often those who deal with unnatural powers are the first to fall to its allure. "Baldhart, grab Mauve. Alergon, Matthew."

Music is the lure, the medium in which one pulls on the desires of others. The artist seeks to find commonality in an audience, to pluck the strings of our souls with a promise of ease and comfort. It is through such guile that an artist thrives, for what good is an artist without the applause?

"This is a trap. Shield walls up. Aliron, can you make something blow up? I have the oil I use for my weapons. Will that do? Let us match these wretched notes with a pure one."
