Dragon's Egg - Act II

Ireth

Mythic Scribe
I raise my eyebrows at Ankari's words, and call softly to him. "Are you sure it is wise to reveal your true name to them?" I then glance at Baldhart, who did the same thing not long ago. What purpose could it serve, if they are so sure the lizards are our enemies? It seems to be one more tool they might use against us.

I clench my fists, a deep hatred for the ranger stirring inside me. I picture his hateful throat being rip open, I can almost feel his blood in my hands. My mind wanders to darker thoughts.

Useless! Why do I hope? Why? I shouldn't forget they're all betrayers! Every single time they have the chance to unite, this happens! I feel my face getting hot. It's their nature. Of course I won't find a safe haven. Never. Yes, never again.

I'm not only angry, I'm sad. I cannot pretend I'm not feeling this sorrow. I let my shoulders slump, doing my best to not turn back immediately to the temple. Only some more seconds, a little longer. I stand still a little longer.

((WOW! Lots to catch up on. This is why I hate working second shift. Anyway, I'll do my best.))

I look around at everyone as they all weigh in on what should be done, and I realize how competely I've failed. I have no power to lead. The others wish to hold me back from my worship. They show me a bow and tell me to shoot without realizing I've never shot an arrow in my life. ((Rydh's a cleric. He can't equip the bow.)) They cannot grasp my faith, my sense of purpose.

For the first time, I don't really know what to do.

A thought strikes me, and I smile slightly. I know it's wrong, but at least I would honor Betula in some way. I wonder if I could actually bring myself to do it...

"I'm useless with a bow," I say to Baldhart. "I will use my sword. You may not like it, but I don't care."

Taevataat: bored again.

Täplä: wishes warmnestfriend would wake up so he could take a nap.

Hirvi: < snore >

Hiljikki:

eyes of skies of
black of blue…

dire dire churning fright
in the fortress of the blight
what distorted claw or eye

lightning bolts don't rebound

That thought is so peculiar it wakes her up.

She checks the sun. I suppose they haven't been gone that long yet.… I really ought to rest longer.

Especially if I'm going to be having dreams like that. What th—what was that intended to convey, Fimblþulr?

No, I suppose I didn't really expect an answer. Though an occasional one would be nice.

She stands up, paces around the temple a couple times, decides she isn't likely to doze off again soon.

Just as well. I never cared for dreaming in trochaic.

Täplä: doesn't snore.

"Useless with a bow, huh?" I fling the useless bow over my shoulder. I reply to Rydh, "So am I. Use any weapon you please."

I don't know what to say to the others. Gone too far? Breaking a code? Keeping a prisoner when we have no prison? If I respond to these things, I'll only make the situation worse.

"They want Burnbright. Give up Burnbright and leave, or die—those were the options given to me as I stood there risking my neck for all of you with four weapons aimed at me. I gave them a peaceful conversation until they told me what they were after: Burnbright. Give her up and leave was their 'deal.'

"Burnbright is not a cup of sugar that they can borrow from us. They intend to steal her, use her and she would suffer, and you wish to know what from talking to them a second time—exactly how she would suffer as they use and abuse her?

"We need to focus on protecting Burnbright. Those are monsters out there and we are obstacles as long as we are here to protect Burnbright. They only asked us to walk away because they are more likely to succeed if they get her without a fight. Don't you get it? They are not interested in making peace! They want Burnbright!

"Now my question is do we form a shield wall and confront the lizards as a team or get Burnbright out of this place? Whatever we do, we need to decide quickly and preferably with the level of solidarity that the enemy has displayed."

"It would be best if I could get an aimed shot at the queen or the mage, I'm not sure, are they one in the same or are there two?"
"Tactical retreat, we have alot of straight hallways. None is as good as the corners we have here. Long passages allow long shots, wide hallways allow arrows to pass the wall. I believe withdrawl would be a mistake."
"we need to act, we need to act soon, and we must act as one."

"Be warned, Killing the queen could cause them to beserk, but it could also end their unity and bravery. We must be prepared for either. Also do we look to take prisoners, or kill them all? I believe if they take anyone alive, the prisoner will be a meal for their minnions. Except of course the girl. They have bigger plans for her, that must not be allowed to happen."
I look down the hall and add,
"No one from our side must live if they triumph, no one. If we die today, here is as good a place as back down the hallway somewhere. Let us take as many of them with us, and lets try to make the queen one of the fallen."

"Well said, Aliron. To answer you, I believe the queen is a magic user—she carries a staff that emits a green glow. The other lizards: two archers and two javelin throwers. The two throwers would likely fall to a single attack from my blade, as those in here did. The other three will not fall easily.

"As one: confront or retreat?"

To the hell with this!

"Oh, now she matters. Now you want to be a team." I talk coldly at first, but increase the pace as the anger takes over my voice. "You're so eager to fight and slay that you ignore everything else! Other lives, even your so noble goal! Countless times you've put the girl in danger without giving a second thought. YOU brought her there and into danger, yet I caught myself doing my best to protect her because if I didn't no one else would. She's not a toy to be played with and tossed aside when it's convenient!"

I move to the girl, taking off her cloak and armor, standing only in my bloodied tunic, underclothes and boots. I retrieve my things, getting also my belt back and throwing my own cloak over my shoulders, but don't even wait for my own clothes, she can keep it if want.

It's probably the last time I see her alive.

"..." I place my hand on her head for a second then turn on my heels, heading to the dark hallway we came from.

Enough!

Burnbright looks increasingly alarmed as the conflict in the party escalates. Her torch is going out, so she sets it by the fireplace and starts checking her sword and crossbow, as though she knows what she's looking for. She bites her lip as her name is mentioned a few time. She looks for Baldhart and Rydh, sees Ankari outside of the room in the hallway. "I don't get it. What would these things want with me? And what was that yelling about Aslaug? She's dead. And besides that, she was good. What's going on?"

Burnbright stops fidgeting with her weapons and looks at the members of the group, waiting for an answer.

Meanwhile, things have changed in the hall. No one realizes it at first, with the argument among the party, but the reptiles have gone silent. There may be a faint, whispering hiss at times, but it is hard to say for certain. Then, the lower section of the hallway darkens, what little light there is in the hall seemingly sucked into nothingness. An pitch blackness moves along the corridor, creeping forward almost like a living this. The darkness extends until it covers the side passage the party originally came down, then stops. Quiet hisses emanate from the darkness.

((EDIT to reflect Nihal's post - the strange darkness springs up in the hallway just as Mauve pushes past the shield wall. Ankari is near her, both of them in the hallway. I'll get a map going tonight. Mauve can decide whether to stop short when she sees this strange blackness form in the hall, or else keep going)).

"Darin, Cadell—shield wall!"

I pray the others choose solidarity over death. Just in case, Nissa, my soul is prepared.

Yes. Now fight well… for the girl.

It does not take me long to reform the shield wall. I sigh as Mauve pushes past me, intending to head back the way we came -- alone, barely clothed. At least she is armed! Still I cannot help my thoughts: Who is the foolish one now, child?

My eyes narrow at the unnatural blackness that bars her way, and ours. "Get behind us, Mauve." Whatever happens now will not be good.

I hate this place.

I stand by Aliron, by the shield wall. Our best archer beside me—that comes as a relief. Until I can do something useful, I simply prepare to dodge projectiles should they aim for me or step aside for an archer. In my low stance, I say, "Nod, hop on if you want."

"They obscure the hallway, everyone silent. Listen for sounds of their approach. Fight blind or retreat?"
I ready an arrow, listening for sounds of movement in the hallway, if I hear sounds of movement towards the reptiles I will shoot.
"Is it real magic or illusion?" I ask, glancing at the few that deal in magic.
Quickly I lay the blessed arrow aside, grab another and shoot into the darkness, listen for it to strike something, reptile, floor, wall, any noise to show that it isn't destroyed in the "darkness".
I grab the blessed arrow and listen.

(didn't roll to hit since I expect to hit a wall or the floor)

Arguing before the enemy will show our lack of solidarity. Our weakness.

I say nothing, but merely gesture to the creatures that are coming for Burnbright. If he thinks I called them, breaking the silence that Aliron requested will accomplish nothing. I can't convince men who always insist on getting the last word in. If I'm to die, it'll be because I did my best to protect Burnbright, not because I was shot in the head arguing with a supposed ally.

((Looking back at this map: http://mythicscribes.com/forums/dragons-egg-rpg/7263-dragons-egg-act-ii-85.html

Everything from where Nod is shown on that map, including his square and the one horizontal from him, is now black. If anyone wants to indicate where they are with specificity, whether in the dark or out of it, please feel free to do so. I'll move things forward tonight and for those who haven't stated precise positions I'll determine a location based on the context of the posts you've made)).
