Burnbright holds her torch in one hand, the other awkwardly holding her sword. As she strains to get a view of the enemy, Mauve begins to draw magical energy for a spell, weaving symbols in the air with her hand. The spell goes wrong, and magic crackles as Mauve tries unsuccessfully to contain it. An electrical charge snaps the air around her.

((Mauve, Nodrick, and Burnbright each take 1 hp of damage)).

Rydh spins away from Ankari and the captive creature upon hearing Burnbright's yell. He sees the after effects of Mauve's magic and Burnbright stumbling back from it as though struck. Rydh charges past his allies, then pulls up short, pounding the wall and taunting the creatures as they run.

Matthew, too, pushes past Mauve and Burnbright, throwing a javeling even as Nodrick fires another arrow at the retreating foes. Both attacks miss, and the creatures disappear around the corner, their hisses retreating with them.

Burnbright stumbles away from Mauve, sword and torch in hand. She puts a few feet between herself and the caster.

Back in the room, Baldhart strikes again at the reptile on the floor. It tries another skillet-parry, but this time Baldhart's sword severs its arm at the elbow and buries itself in the creature's chest. The skillet clatters to the ground and the creature emits its last, wet breath.

The other creature is hastily nocking another arrow, but Darin rounds the corner with a booming cry on his lips. He brings his hammer around in a wide arc, swinging for the creature's skull:

Darin Attacks [1d20+2] = 8+2 = 10

The creature leaps five feet backward, avoiding the swing and loosing its arrow at the screaming dwarf:

Reptile Attack [1d20+1] = 4+1 = 5

The arrow is too hastily fired and strikes the ceiling, snapping in two. ((Note the lizard is now five feet to the left of where he is shown on the map)).

Cadell remains by Baldhart, protective. The stench of the creatures has got to him ((-1 on all rolls)).

Aliron remains in the corner, contemplating, and Ankari continues to protect his captive creature by the door to the room.

They run off. Cowards.

"Matthew, stand watch for a moment," I say, then I turn back to Nodrick. He barely realizes how badly he's hurt. He just keeps shooting. I grasp his shoulder and recite the spell...

((I don't get why Unseen Servant is giving us so much trouble lately.))

Nod's wounds are healed. Out of the corner of my eye I see Burnbright backing away, scared. "Don't get away from the rest of the group!" I call to her. I pray to Betula in my heart that she listens.

The commotion in the hall must not be ignored. I'll thank Cadell later for protecting me. Now he is needed elsewhere—no time for manners!

"Cadell, join Matthew - shield wall," I grunt, as I pull my sword from one enemy—

—and charge the next!

I strike the creature in the back… and lift!

I remember that fish demon that ruined my old dress. I won't make the same mistake! I lift my arms and my blade at an angle to keep the lizard innards from pouring onto my custom outfit.

They ran away.

I look around, afraid to discover the damage I've caused. Drat, she didn't hide. I look over my shoulder, seeing the others and how our defensive line is gone. I turn to the girl again.

"Sorry... sorry." I try to calm her down, feeling short of breath.

[1d20-1] = 15-1 = 14 #CHA check
((If needed. WHYUNOSPELLCASTROLL?))

"Come. Crossbow." Reaching for Burnbright, I pull her her back to our corridor - between Ankari and Nod - and push her against the wall, standing protectively in front of her to provide the best cover I can. I don't even have the energy get angry at them for not taking care of the girl.

The javelin is still on my body. I clench my teeth and look away, pulling it out. Using my cloak, I apply some pressure to the wound while I keep my spear in front of me using the other hand.

I'm dizzy like yesterday. I won't be able to resist another fail. At least the cloak is red?

Still gagging on the stench that fills the room and is now compounded by that of the lizard's blood, I obey Baldhart's command and run out of the room. As I pass Ankari and his captive lizard, I simply shake my head and mutter, "Why?"

Mauve is hurt, I can see that well before I reach her. There is nothing I can do for her, so I move past to draw level with Matthew. No more lizards are to be seen, but that does not mean there will not yet be any.

"Rydh! Get behind us and heal Mauve!" I all but snarl at the cleric.

Baldhart pulls her sword from the dead reptile and rushes toward Darin's foe. She's not able to get up quite the speed she would like, with the table in the way, but nevertheless her sword catches the hapless creature just beneath the shoulder blade as it tries to reload its crossbow. The blade punches through and Baldhart lifts the thing of its feet, holding it away from her. The creature is already dead when Darin's hammer catches it across the jaw, twisting its neck around with a snap. Baldhart lowers her sword and the reptile's corpse slides to the ground.

Darin grunts, then nods to Baldhart. "These creatures learn the meaning of the word fear when a dwarf and his allies are afoot."

Rydh moves back toward the injured Nod, feeling the familiar flow of life energy moving along his arms to his hands, which he places on Nod, healing the halfling's wounds. ((+5 HP to Nod)).

Burnbright tenses as Mauve tries to sooth her. "What was that? What happened to me?" She hears Rydh's comments as well, and moves back into the hallway, positioning herself in the middle of the group. When Mauve mentions the crossbow, she shakes her head. "I can't hit anything with it. Besides, I can't use it with one hand and I'm supposed to hold the torch." She squints toward the dim corner of the corridor, where the other creatures were last seen. "Where do you think they went?"

The rest of the group begins to organize itself again, however a hiss from the door brings the focus back to the problem of Ankari's captive. The creature's strength is fading from the wound it has already suffered, but it still twists weakly in Ankari's grip, casting its gaze fearfully from one group member to the next.

From the darkness around the corner, the quiet hiss of a reptilian tongue. Cadell's keen ears pick up more than one voice. More than two, as best he can tell.

I hear Cadell shout. Damn. I was hoping to avoid this...

I move over to Mauve and Burnbright. Mauve is hurt, and she seems to be getting weaker. There's a bloody javelin just beside her, and she's applying hard pressure to the wound, trying to stop the bleeding.

She's tough. Why does she have to be tough?

I take her hand and look her in the eye. "Stop pressing so hard," I say, and I let the power of Betula flow into her through me.

Rydh heals Mauve 6 HP.

I hold her gaze for just a little too long. Uncomfortable, I release her hand and kneel down in front of Burnbright. "You ok?" I ask.

((Rydh is now -1 Mana. There will be no more casting for awhile.))

Still standing beside Matthew, I tense at the sound of a reptilian hiss from away around the corner. Not just one... there seems to be at least two of the creatures. My eyes narrow in anticipation, and I hope none of those who approach will let loose the same stench as the others. If Matthew and I go down, the lizards will be free to do as they will to us, and our companions.

"There are more lizards coming," I murmur to Matthew. "At least two, perhaps more."

The child is wearing my patience thin. I don't care if they're going to think I'm "stealing" their precious girl, I'll have a good talk with her when it's all over!

"Will explain later." I reply in a low, gentle voice, then add rather coldly. "But if you dare to chase them I swear I'll knock you out. Hand the torch or drop it, use the crossbow or don't fight."

My tired eyes are locked on the passage leading back to the temple. We didn't explore it completely. I can only hope they got the other covered, narrowing my attention to the girl behind me and the darkness ahead.

Something touches my hand, startling me. I find the cleric looking at me. The pain diminishes, my mind clears and somehow my body gets stronger at every passing moment, getting even better than in the morning. It's a really weird sensation.

It's... it's what healing magic is.

I nod at him, feeling really grateful. When he looks away I tense muscles, ready to deflect any incoming attacks.

((Mauve was at her last HP, so, yay!))

I smile at Darin.

Why? It's like he's taking credit when you did all the killing!

Nissa, I had help. Cadell was my shield and Darin drew the archer's fire. Or were you testing me?

Maybe I'm just cheering you on. You won't be a valkyrie anytime soon if you keep this up!

Is that a bad thing?

No. Keep fighting.

"Darin," I say, "I'm honored to fight by your side." I head to the door as I speak. "Let's get to the front of the line. We have a kid, and she depends on a shield wall."

Finally I can see again, the stench blinding me for the moment,
[if the one behind the table is still alive] I draw my sword scramble under the table and stab at the reptiles lower body as high up as possible. Not sure if there will be bonuses for the beast not seeing the attack coming.]
it might not be honorable, it might be dirty, but alls fair in love and war, the victor is the one who lives to tell the tale.

[if the one behind the table has fallen, I will move to the hallway with my bow. having heard there was a sighting of enemy there too.]

The party is gathering in the hall again, the reptiles in the room being dead. When you manage to get the group to go silent for a moment, you can all hear the hisses from down the corridor. At one point they grow louder, and the reptile in Ankari's arms chokes out a hiss in reply before Ankari tightens his grip and cuts off the creatures words.

As the group reforms, putting itself back into chosen tactical position, one of the reptilian voices rises above the others. The creature, still unseen, speaks a halting, slithery approximation of your language. "One will come to usss. Your leader. No weaponsss."

My ears prick at the voice that reaches us from around the corner, and I look around at my companions. "Which of us should go forward?"

((My vote goes for Cadell, personally, being the oldest and all (and posing the least threat due to his missing hand), but everyone's entitled to their vote. ^^))

SeverinR

Valar Lord
"How about we say their leader and our leader meet with weapons to talk, rather then give them a potential hostage to match ours. So neither side could easily kill the other we move into a side hallway, and make the hallway between no mans...reptiles land? We don't trust them, they don't trust us, if either side breaks the truce, we all can charge into battle, and both leaders will still have weapons."

Ireth

Mythic Scribe
I nod slowly. That leader certainly won't be me, then, unless I give the shield I carry back to Rydh. Not that I can use my sword very well anyway.

SeverinR

Valar Lord
"I might be able to hide(shadows) in the hallway with arrow ready if we want to keep the advantage. I know some are honorable so we would have to word the agreement carefully not to dishonor them. Arrange a signal, and I could have an aimed shot planted in the leader without a word. With one word, have the group move into the hallway, after the shot.
If we want to do it completely honorable, someone could watch with a mirror for trouble. Anyone have a mirror?"

[I don't see that anyone has a mirror. Guess that won't work.]

I'm never helpless.

I keep silent as the elves exchange words.

No. It's not the reptiles I don't trust. Although... I glance at Rydh. No, no, no. They'll sort it themselves. I've already done too many bad decisions today. They don't trust me anyway.

I cross my arms and keep watching.

I shrug and glance down at my borrowed shield. "The closest thing I have is this." Looking up at Aliron I continue, "I would prefer the honorable way over the alternative. If we dishonor our agreement with our enemies, are we any better than them?"
