Dragon's Egg - Act II

As we move into position, I lean in to hear Rydh's words, and nod silently. I will do my best to protect everyone, not just Darin. Especially Burnbright.

((And my mana? Did I recover any point after since I've used Detect Magic?))

Their words about bones bring me back to the reality and I start to look around, as if noticing the water for the first time. I am busy trying to see through it and looking for clues of it's origin, like cracks on the floor below or on the walls, when the dwarf snaps.

My first instinct is to stop him. For a second I almost try.

He won't stop nor listen.

I get out of the way.

"Come on, back into formation everyone. Follow Darin's lead. Let's follow the blood trail.".

I can't believe in what I've just heard! It's like they're always looking for creative ways to kill themselves! They won't listen about walking into a trap now, tsc.

I reluctantly return to my position near Burnbright, glaring angrily at the cleric. He doesn't even look at me.

"Rydh," I whisper as we keep pace with Darin and Cadell, "trust me when I say we mustn't lose the wall to keep Darin alive. If he charges, have the two knights form a wall. Let me--only me--charge beside Darin if it comes to that. You know I'm the only one here who fights that way, and I'm never reckless, always tactical when I do.

"I trust you as a commander. Please trust me as a tactician."

I lengthen my strides to keep myself close to the dwarf.

"Nod, if I have to charge, you'll jump down, right?"

"That will work in these halls," I reply to Baldhart quietly, "but should we enter a wider space we won't have the shields to maintain the wall. In that case I'll stay with Burnbright while the rest of us engage. There's really no other option."

"In that situation, keep the archers close to you. Give them a target. Kill it, then next target. I'll try to coordinate attacks with the fighters and reduce the enemy's numbers quick as we can."

I watch as Mauve looks angrily at Rydh. It is clear she has something on her mind.

“Rydh, before we move on, it appears that Mauve has something to say.â€

Darin ignores the banter around him, having reached the stone door. Standing there, dripping wet and simmering in rage, he yanks the door open and steps into the corridor. Brandishing his hammer in the steel grip of his two hands, he bellows "Show yourselves you scaly-skinned defilers! Darin, son of Dain, reclaims these halls in the name of the dwarves. Come and meet your doom!" He then stomps down the hallway in the direction of the blood stains.

Burnbright practically jumps out of her skin at Darin's booming, voice. After the echo subsides, she looks all around her, holding out her torch. "Here! Someone take this! I can't hold it and fight at the same time!"

((My mana?))

I get startled by the knight's words.

I can't forget I'm surrounded by wolves. Being watched. And now I can't back off.

I clear my throat and stand straight, slightly raising my chin. Darin makes his display and the girl return to her heedless behaviour. Not good. I give a little tap on her shoulder, reprehending her.

"I was just wondering why what we rejected minutes ago suddenly became so attractive. I can't see how dying to 100 or 1000 lizards will help in any way."

Oh, that's gonna hurt.

"The last time you rushed to battle things didn't end really well, did they?"

I cross my arms, letting my words sink in for a second.

"At least you had a good reason. Now, if you manage to kill a thousand of beasts and no one dies, then what? Are you going to sit there until the end of the time while the Taint spreads over the world and stronger foes appear? Or are you going to leave, so the day after this place gets reclaimed by the beasts?"

I like Sir Matthew. He doesn't always talk much, and I've been wondering how I might draw him out. This, however, is one time I wish he'd have kept silent. Darin storms off, Mauve starts her rant, and now Burnbright thinks she'll be allowed to engage the enemy. I really don't need this.

I look down at Burnbright with a smile, and say "Hang onto that torch for now, child. You'll se what a real fight is soon enough."

I then spin on my heel, march over to Mauve, and get right in her face. "If you wish to leave, then leave. If you wish to stay with us, then stay. I, for one, would like to have you along, but if all you're going to do is criticize then we have better things to do."

I then stand a little straighter and talk a little louder. "If you're going to come with us, then be with us. We're going after Darin, because it's the right thing to do."

Then I turn away from her and start to re-organize. "Sir Matthew, equip your shield and take your place beside Cadell if you please. Aliron, take Matthew's former place beside Baldhart, and keep that bow handy. Follow Darin!"

I look back at Burnbright.

"Rydh is right. Watch and learn, and remember well what you see."

I move forward. There is much I want to say to Darin, but the words will do no good now.

Nissa, the battle has not truly begun, and already the group is falling apart. Darin is letting anger get the better of him, and what of Ankari? He followed this trail and did not return. Will we find Ankari fighting? Lying on the ground? Why do stubborn people take unnecessary risks?

Rydh is doing well with those who will listen. Ankari and Darin would go their own way even if Brynhild Herself came down and commanded our party.

"So much for stealth. I guess dying for desecrated bones is better then living to see all the defilers killed."
I say watching the dwarf charging off.
"Lesson for today girl, letting emotion drive you to battle, while fierce will most likely end badly. The smart combatant wins over the emotional more often then naught. Even, as now, the low inteligent beasts are thinking more clearly then Darin. Taunt an opponent, nick, scratch, tease them, make them emotional, then exploit their mistake when they make it, and make it their last mistake."

"The Dwart is looking to sacrifice himself, we lose the suprise, so exploit the enemy as they hack the dwarf apart. They focus on him, we cut down as many as we can. Trying to save the dwarf will likely end with that person ending up as the dwarf."

I watch the cleric closing in, clutching at my spear by instinct. I'm not just crossed now, but a little alarmed too. The little I knew of clerics said that they were benevolent, if not simpletons. It's clear this notion is outdated. This elf is unpredictable and may be violent.

He turns away from me. There is so much I would like to yell at them, but that would be to kick a dead horse, wouldn't it?

"I already knew it would be impossible to talk some sense into you." I answer in a low, cold voice.

The right thing would be to leave while I can. Bloody fools!

I look out of the corner of my eyes to Aliron. Except you, maybe. But your friends don't take the harsh truth too well.

Mauve made a good point. But Rydh was to angry to hear it. As I move into position I ask Rydh a question.

"Before we go any farther, we need to know, what exactly is our goal here?"

I offer an answer. "I'd like to think that getting through these tunnels will lead us to Drimmen-delve, which is where Sir Cadell needs to be. As long as Darin leads us to a battle we can handle, it's best to follow him and have him as an ally. If he charges a crowd--which I assure you I would not--Aliron's tactic is best."

Time to stop keeping it to myself. "And I hate to say it, but... Ankari is ahead of us on this trail. If this path leads to more than we can handle, Ankari will tell us..." Grimly, I add, "...one way or another.

"I share your concerns that we are, to an extent, saving the reckless from themselves. But if we work as a team, we'll make it through here. We have little choice but to move forward anyway. That lizard thing was only a ten minute walk from where we slept and broke bread not long ago. Turning back will do little to keep us safe from the lizards, and the surface has its share of danger."

I take a deep breath to keep my tone not so lofty.

"First of all: Move, faster! Talk while advancing, time is running out. Although we should still be able to double back, if we choose the pursuit this lost time will condemn us." I press ahead.

"Second: This place is more likely to lead us to Verstenn than to Drimmen-delve. And believe me, we're not prepared. If it's helpful in any way, based on the suicidal dwarf's conjectures, we moved west, north and we're moving towards the west again. If the path is still straight."

I hope the ranger gets in trouble. That would teach him a thing or two about being rational.

"Third: We would have more luck if we did an ambush. I guess it's out of question now. The temple on the hill was fairly secure, the opening was locked. After the lizard saw us it won't be anymore. The only way out I see is to catch him or to do the unexpected, killing some of them, conquering some part of this blasted place and hiding in there to lick our wounds. Highly dangerous, incredibly hard, but may work. The main issue, after being able to kill them, is to not being tracked down."

"One must question those desiring to be a leader when they act wrecklessly for themselves, why would they have more concern for the group?"

Arrow ready, watching behind and listening.

"I might be able to hear approaching enemy if the stupid stumpy man quieted down."

Before I can gape at Sir Matthew's question, I catch myself and keep my face still. Is he daft? Does he really not know our goal, or is he just testing me? Baldhart volunteers an answer for him, which I find a relief. These people seem more content to talk than act, and it's wearing me down.

Then Mauve speaks, and for once we agree.

"Right," I say, nodding in her direction. "Now let's get a move on. If you value your own lives or the lives of others, you'll understand our situation. We cannot stand idle and let these creatures fall upon us. We take the fight to them."

Defense by way of offense. Basic.

Being at the front of the group, I can hear most of the others' conversation clearly as it carries forward, but I do not dare to turn and respond for fear of missing something vital up ahead. I simply obey Mauve's and Rydh's assertion that we must move faster and keep going forward.

((For the record, I assumed we were walking and talking. No way would Baldhart just stand still and talk while Darin's rushing into a battle that she wants to be in! Can we just assume that Darin isn't that far ahead of us?))

((I imagine they sometimes reduced the speed, specially when Rydh came over, so she's pressing them to a faster and steady pace. :p

P.S.off-topic: I gotta to update my DA account. I'm a lazyass!))
