Amazing. In the middle of all that hell Cadell held off those two demonic terrors, taking blows meant for others. I heal him, he wakes, and in that very instant helps win the day with quick thinking and reflexes. Baldhart helps him up and now he's leading the way back to the tavern.
I thought he needed me. Looks like the rest of us may need him more than anyone.
As I follow Cadell back to the Crow, I look over my shoulder at the temple as it collapses. Perhaps it's for the best. If the townsfolk were to see what was in the cellar they may panic. Worse, my companions and I may be blamed. The villagers saw some of us fighting those horrid creatures, but chances are they're as confused as I am as to why they were there.
That reminds me, where was that little rat fink Nodrick during all this? Matthew took the priest to saftey, I think, but the Gnat is nowhere to be seen. And what about Burnbright? I don't see her either. I hope they're both alright, but I'd like to know what they were up to while we were risking our lives fighting.
When we get back to the Hooded Crow, I'll ask if anyone needs healing. I know Cadell can't be feeling that well, and I've no idea if Ankari or Baldhart were wounded.

I doubt that I have ever been more grateful to own a horse. Despite having been healed in the temple, I still feel drained, and my posture slumps as I ride toward the tavern. A drink of water and a long rest would do me much good. After I find out what became of the others, of course -- Matthew, Burnbright, Nod and the priest. I hope they are not injured.
I look around at Baldhart and Rydh, and smile. "Thank you both for aiding me back there. I might have died if not for your actions." That creature would have torn me to shreds had Baldhart not pinned it down, whether or not Rydh was able to heal me.

I put on a pouty face and look towards the door opening up to the Hooded Crow. If it's one of those demons opening the door, I'm going to crap myself. Easy, Nod. Easy.

The door opens and Matthew, Grim, and Father Harald come through, the latter being supported by Matthew. Burnbright nudges Nod, who is still laying on her, and says "That's Hather Farald." Grim's eyes swing toward Burnbright and Nod and then widen. Burnbright's bruises have grown a bit darker as the night has progressed, and though she suffered no serious injury she looks as though she's been clubbed by an ogre.
((I am on my way to catch a flight. I probably won't be back on until late tonight, though I do have a layover today and might have some time to get online. Assume the rest of the group arrive at the tavern a few minutes after Matthew and the priest. You guys can go ahead an interact a bit in the Crow)).

I wait in the shadows watching how the townspeople act and looking for suspicious behavior. At a safe distance so falling embers and buiding parts won't hit me.
I enter the Crow along with all of my elven friends, Rydh, Cadell, Ankari, and... where did Aliron go? I could've sworn he entered just ahead of me.
I see Sir Matthew safely escorted Father Harald here. I want to give him a piece of my mind about leaving the elves behind, but then, did I not leave Rydh in grave danger when I feared for Burnbright's safety? We learned a hard lesson the easy way, so I will be gentle when I discuss our glaring tactical errors. I may need to emphasize my own error and leave it at that, as I do not wish to sour a hard-earned celebration of victory. Our party, Father Harald and Burnbright all made it out alive.
"Burnbright..." It breaks my heart to see her like this. Maybe this experience will teach her what the life of an advernturer is truly like. But I made a promise to her and shall keep it. "...if you still wish to learn the ways of the sword, I can teach you. Just promise me that you'll only treat our lesson like an exercise. It takes years of training before you can face fire demons. It... saddens me to see you hurt."
I look at Nodrick. He's bleeding! "What in the world happened to you?" Was I so focused on Burnbright's blood that I failed to notice the tiny man was hurt? "Hold still... Rydh!" I bend over Nod's head and--a piece of glass? "Hey, wait a minute..." I kneel down so we see eye to eye. "Your wound is just like mine:" I point to the burn on my shoulder-- "self-inflicted." --the burn caused by my reckless shoulder charge into in enemy made of fire. I begin to laugh at the poor little creature. "Did you reach up to the shelf to get a drink, only to have the bottle come down onto your head? I guess I'm not the only clumsy one around here? Ha!"
I pound my fist on the table.
I hear a crack.
It wasn't humor that made me do that. It was the image of Nod lying with his head in a little girl's lap. It was anger. The primal rage of an overprotective 'sister.' I must admit to myself that I wanted the runt to see me break a table with my fist. But the table wasn't mine to destroy.
"Oh, um... this table was already damaged when I came here. Er, right?" I look at Grim. "I have no coin. Oh. Oh! How about my family recipe for Glühwein? Hrolf loved it! It will sell! The recipe, and I'll mix it myself to work off what I owe for the table?"
Idiot! That could have been a paying job! I... I really need to find a better way to release this excess adrenaline.

I sit there, stewing, sipping my drink. "Burnbright, I think you should tell them what happened," I say. "I'm all out of stories for the day." I give her a wink. I find it interesting that everyone can read my thoughts. Is everyone a damn psychic around here? Maybe I should stop thinking so everyone can't see--oh, nevermind.
"Yes, Burnbright. I am glad that Nodrick saved you from that dreadful basement. By the time I got to you, it seemed Nodrick had everything under control."
I turn to Nod. He looks grumpy. I should not have laughed at his clumsiness. He shouldn't have had his head in a little girl's lap either, but... I must think of the image of Nod struggling to carry Burnbright up the stairs.
"Nod, if you hadn't gone to the basement ahead of me, I fear the creatures who tore up those men wouldn't have given any quarter to a young lady. I don't want to think of what I would have seen if not for your actions."
I look at the broken table.
Oh, Nod, why didn't you use a bar stool or step ladder? Why didn't you ask for help reaching high places? Why not fill a bath tub with rum if you wish to smell of it!

In response to Matthew's call for aid, I go over to the priest and take his hand.
"Our Gods are not the same, Father Harald, but I hope you won't begrudge an Elven deity's healing."
I utter my spell, knowing I may only be able to cast just one more.
((Wow. Good time to roll a one, I guess. Rydh casts Cure Light Wounds on Father Harald and heals 1 HP. Rydh is now down to 1 Mana.))
Not sure why, but my spell was not potent when cast on Father Harald. Perhaps the human and Elven pantheons truly are at odds. I'm feeling very drained now, but Cadell is starting to show some signs that perhaps he needs more healing than I thought. I turn to Rydh and smile at his words, thanking him in my native tongue. "Diolch yn fawr. I suppose going from illusionist to knight was worthwhile after all."
I feel a rush of warmth as Rydh murmurs a spell, and vigor flows from his body into mine. I straighten my posture and sigh, feeling considerably better. Rydh looks even more exhausted than I felt before the spell; I turn and offer him an arm to lean on, and guide him toward the nearest chair. "Sit down, you look about to fall."

[I sometimes forget to check here on the weekend, and having new computer porblems, so I will offer a 2nd movement if nothing comes of my recon.)
If I find nothing of interest, ie no useful gossip, no hint of townspeople blaming the newcomers, no conspirators, or subversive activity,
after a while I will return to the group. Staying in the shadows, as is my nature. Moving unseen is not necessary unless I learn something and need to get away unseen. So I will provide a roll.)
I will find the group. If they are awake I will tell them anything I found or that I found nothing, if asleep I will wait until morning unless my information is dire.
(guess I'm having keyboard problems too, porblems, lol)

You hear and see nothing that makes you suspicious of any of the townspeople. They seem exhausted and many are frightened by the ordeal. They saw Matthew leading Father Harald away from the temple, but a few ask after men named Finn and Koli, and whether either of them has been seen. The mood becomes even more grim when it appears the whereabouts of the men are unknown. The temple yet burns, though most of it has since collapsed. It is impossible to search the structure at this time, and some of the men in the village center vow to conduct a search as soon as conditions warrant it.
Because the temple is already lost, most of the townsfolk are heading home or back to the Crow. A few men stay behind to watch as the last of the building burns, and to ensure that the fire is not able to spread to adjacent buildings.
There is talk of the group of newcomers to Srilkind, and particularly talk of the glimpses of fighting between the group and the strange creatures. There are a few voices expressing suspicion of elves and others in the group, but there are also enough who saw members of the group leaving the Crow after the fire bell rang that these suspicions do not gain much traction. Still, there are those who appear to harbor doubts.

Burnbright struggles to her feet when Baldhart arrives, and rushes over to give the older woman a hug. Her feet are unsteady, causing her to wobble a bit, and when Baldhart bends down to hug her she smells rum. Burnbright is about to tell her story when Grim takes her arm and gives her a good sniff. He presses his lips together. "Where's that wife of mine? Still washing your clothes? Well, that's for the best. Take this key - you'll have our room tonight. Hurry off, now. This is the time for grownups, and besides, I don't know what would happen to either of us if the missus came out here and caught you in that state. I don't want to know, either."
Burnbright nods glumly and takes the key. She looks at Father Harald, her eyes welling. "Father, I think Koli and Finn...well, Nod'll tell you. I think it was them in the basement." With that, she heads upstairs, steadying herself against the wall as she goes and muttering "at least my face feels better."
Father Harald is led to a chair and Grim brings him a cup of water to wet his throat. He appears grateful that Rydh has healed him, though he says "Careful where you show that power, son. Dark things have befallen those who wield the powers of magic in Srilkind. Healing or no, it scares people."
Father Harald closes his eyes. "Finn and Koli." He sighs. "I suppose I should hear it from all of you, and from the start. For my part, I woke in my quarters on the second floor to flame and smoke. The fire was not yet spread, and I searched the second floor for Finn and Koli, who work with me at the temple. When I could not find them, I made my way to the first floor, where I was set upon by those foul demons of fire. Had you not come along just then, I fear they would have been an end to me."
Father Harald closes his eyes. "The source of this evil must be determined. We must know whether we are safe. Come, friends, tell me your night's tale from the start."
As Father Harald listens to the group, Grim edges around to where Nod lays, giving the halfling an evil look. By this time, Baldhart is speaking to Nod. She slams her fist onto the table, cracking the wood and causing the table to break inward. Grim frowns, but then waves off her apologies. "I'll forgive it, lass. You just pick which piece of table you want to thrash him with, and I'll take the other half."
((No specific order here. You guys can all speak to Father Harald or Grim, or to one another, in any order you wish. Feel free to play the scene forward in the tavern if you like)).

"I have little to tell of what I did, I simply found you and brought you here. Now that you are safe I intend to ride out and find whoever dared to stike against my Lord Tyr, but first I would like to hear what happened while I was taking you to safety."
I am in a foul mood. The funk that taints this far-flung cesspool has settled into my bones. We haven't spent a full day in town before we witness the corruption plaguing this land. A plot is afoot. Or I just witnessed supreme coincidence.
"Father, what's going on here? Who would want to see your temple burned? We were planning on visiting you tomorrow to ask about your niece, the late priestess Aslaug. I have a suspicion that someone overheard our intention to go there and tried to rid you. What do you know that would be so important someone would want to you see dead before you speak of it?"
The questions spill from my mouth and I can't do anything to stop it. I'm angry. Fighting against a nameless enemy is one thing. Fighting against an enemy that we didn't know existed and don't know the "wheres" and "whats" is quite another thing.

I glare at Grim specifically. "Boy, there is no pleasing some of you. I risked my life and almost died, yet still you laugh and make jokes. Well guess what? I'm a damned hero! A hero!"
I pull out my flute and smear the blood from my head on it. "If you want a hero who can slay a demon single-handedly to follow you in your adventures, then take me along! Otherwise you can all---" I blow my flute a high-pitched note and storm out of the inn.

I listen to Ankari's questions, and would also like to have a few answers. The problem is that I feel so light-headed from that last bout of casting that I think I need some air.
Suddenly I wince as I hear the Gnat play an ear-splitting note on his flute. Seeing him bloodied encouraged me when I walked into the tavern, but now he's visibly angry and walking out of the Crow. I'm tired, but I'm also curious. So after he walks out I go to the door, and I hear him yelling through the door. I put my ear to the door, but his words are unintelligible. As quietly as I can manage, I slip the latch and open the door just enough to see and hear Nodrick say "I'll show them a cockroach!" He pulls a kitchen knife out of his boot. "I'll carve a cockroach in their skin," he yells. "Then they'll know!"
For a moment he's silent, and for the same moment I'm stunned. Then he speaks again.
"Fine, fine. But they're still all ugly and stupid."
He puts the knife away and turns as if to head back inside. I step out of the door and close it loud enough to get his attention. He looks up, startled, stops. To me, he looks hurt. Hurt on the inside. Even if I could cast, there's no spell I know of that can help him. All I can do is talk to him.
"I... I owe you an apology, Nodrick Gnatcatcher. You see, when we all headed back here after the fight, I thought the worst of you. Because I didn't see you doing anything to help us I assumed you'd backed out on us. I was wrong. It's obvious you helped Burnbright, and you're well wounded to show for it. I'm sorry, Nod. I know that may not help much, but at least now you know how I feel.
"Now, come. What do you say you and I look for Aliron, eh? He's nowhere to be seen, and I'd wager that if anyone could find him it would be you. Would that be alright?"

I listen to Ankari's questions, and would also like to have a few answers. The problem is that I feel so light-headed from that last bout of casting that I think I need some air.
Suddenly I wince as I hear the Gnat play an ear-splitting note on his flute. Seeing him bloodied encouraged me when I walked into the tavern, but now he's visibly angry and walking out of the Crow. I'm tired, but I'm also curious. So after he walks out I go to the door, and I hear him yelling through the door. I put my ear to the door, but his words are unintelligible. As quietly as I can manage, I slip the latch and open the door just enough to see and hear Nodrick say "I'll show them a cockroach!" He pulls a kitchen knife out of his boot. "I'll carve a cockroach in their skin," he yells. "Then they'll know!"
For a moment he's silent, and for the same moment I'm stunned. Then he speaks again.
"Fine, fine. But they're still all ugly and stupid."

I walk back into the Crow still feeling tired. Aliron is missing, but I shouldn't look for him alone. Instead, I'll sit and listen if Father Harald has some answers for Ankari. If not, I'll pay Grim whatever it takes to get a bed. Sleeping in a chair with my head on a table won't help me recover from my weariness of spirit.
