Ch.7: "Hot Fuzz" / Hesperides

Sigrlinn ponders this for a while. "I'm not sure my magic or Kell's is suitable for changing our forms or making illusions. If it's acceptable, I'd be willing to hunt some not-people animals for their pelts to make costumes with. It might be tricky without a bow, but I could try with just the knife. As long as that's alright with you."

Kell tells Gerald, "My magic is related to water. So I can do things like make a really sparkly ice dress. I'm not sure how well that lends itself to looking like an animal, though, except maybe by adding a bit of ice around the edges to an animal that lives in the cold. I'd have more luck summoning a wave of water and sending it toward a fire."

Gerald replies to Kell, "In that case, if you see any fires, don't feel you're stepping on my toes if you quench a flame. Safety first. That's my motto."

To Sigrlinn he says, "We don't really have hunting grounds here. You could talk to the Duck Huntress. She's... well... have you ever seen a harpy? She's sort of a harpy, but only her legs are a woman's. Her face and her feet make her much different than a harpy. She used to be Piggie's swimming instructor, but now my wife... well, the student's become the master, I guess."

He tells Kell, "My wife has a preference for water spells. Maybe she can teach you her magic. I know it's a thing few can teach, but Piggie's a, whaddayacallem... a demigod? -ess? Zeus is her father, though my mother-in-law prefers I don't hoot and holler about that."

Sigrlinn nods. "We've met one, and seen more in passing. They were very friendly. Where would I find the Duck Huntress?"

Kell asks Sigrlinn, "Are we going to separate for a bit, or do we need to decide whether to visit Piggie or the Duck Huntress first?"

She asks Gerald, "Where would we find both the swimming hole?"

She asks the fairies, "Do you guys know where we'd need to go?"

Gerald says, "With luck, you might find both at the swimming hole. If you don't see the Duck Huntress there, um……… look up, I guess. I don't know where she goes aside from her occasional morning swim."

Moana points and sings, "I will show you how to find your way to the water!"

Laverne sings, "Show you now—you'll find Zeus daughter!"

Shirley sings, "A pig who swims like an otter… taught her!"

The three fairies leave intertwining trails of fairy dust as they sing and fly toward the swimming hole…

…once you arrive, you see some animal-people in the water, a pig-woman and duck-woman among them.

Sigrlinn smiles at the sight of both Margaret/Piggie and the Duck Huntress at the swimming hole, and says to Kell, "Looks like we won't have to separate after all! Unless you don't want to come along on my hunt."

She approaches the Duck Huntress with a smile. "Hallo! I'm told you're the one to talk to about hunting around here? My friend Kell and I are here to speak with Hera about some very important matters. But first we need a way to not seem human so we don't cause too much of a stir, and I was thinking of making costumes with animal pelts. But I don't want to risk any transformed people getting hurt by mistake."

Kell calls to Piggie, "Your husband Gerald told me to talk to you about something I need to accomplish, but I can wait until your swim is finished. Please enjoy yourself, and I will speak with you once you are done swimming."

She pulls her chiton up to about mid-thigh height and removes her sandals, sitting at the edge of the swimming hole and dangling her feet over the edge into the water. That's about as wet as she wants to get at the moment.

Upon closer inspection, Kell notices Piggie is swimming in the nude. Her long golden curls are sufficient for covering her top. As for the waist down, Piggie appeared to be wearing a teal swimsuit from afar. In fact, she has a mermaid tail!

She doesn't seem to mind the surprise visit. She greets both of you politely, introducing her friend as "Daphne Duck, the only Huntress in Hesperides."

Daphne waves a brown wing, revealing some indigo and violet feathers as she extends her wing to wave. She is also naked, though her feathers cover her as much as a swimsuit would as far as you can tell. Her face is strangely smooth where a woman's face would be hairless. Feathers are around her face like a coif. She has a beak, and her eyes are out to the side of her head. Her eyes are not quite like a human's and not quite like a duck's. Her form is both beautiful and awkward.

Piggie says, "I assume Gerry has a reason for telling you of my magic. It seems my powers are similar to that of my father's wife, Queen Hera. The difference is that whatever form I grant you is not forced upon you. You choose the magic, and the magic grants you a form.

"I can teach four forms. Would you like to hear about them?"

Daphne swims toward Sigrlinn and wades to shore. She sits on the sand and stares at the Huntress through the dark eye on the side of her head.

Sigrlinn smiles and nods when Piggie gives Daphne's name, and holds out a hand to shake Daphne's wing. "I'm Sigrlinn Tofisdottir. It's a pleasure to meet you, Daphne."

Kell tells Piggie, "I'm Kell Silvertide and we have some extremely urgent business with Hera regarding her husband as well as some other time-sensitive but less urgent business. We are told our best chance of that is to get on the Mayor's schedule, and our best chance of THAT is to not stick out so badly. I believe your husband recommended you because I can cast water magic."

"And as for the four forms, yes please - I'd love to hear of them." She gives Piggie a smile - after all, the woman is taking time out of her schedule to speak with Kell.

She smiles at and waves to Daphne. "It's nice to meet you as well, Daphne."

Piggie replies, "Well, only one of the forms would make use of the water element. I am currently in that form. Should you learn the mermaid form, you would be a fish from the waist down. From the waist up, you would be you, but with gills—not that anyone ever notices the gills. If you can manipulate the elements to form clothing, that would eliminate the potential for wardrobe malfunctions.

"If you travel a lot, the kentauride form is quite nice. This is an earth-based form. I suppose here in Hesperides, you'll find many land-based forms that are part animal, part person, but this is the only one I can teach.

"If you hang around with fairies a lot, there is an angelic form that a northerner once called valkyrie. I suppose this is an imitation. You wouldn't need to serve an Asgardian goddess or anything like that.

"And then there's the kitsune, also known as the fire-fox. It's a rather beautiful form, though you'd probably want to inform Master Kikuchiyo of your choice. The lawmen don't exactly trust fox-people. But then, no one ever thought bunnies would make good lawmen, so who knows?

"Are you interested in learning any of these forms?"

((I thought Underwater Breathing would be more interesting with a transformation, so it's replaced with Mermaid Form. That 'third kind' I was silent about was transformation. @tbgg, I liked your idea to just tie lv.1-5 to elements. I'll do that will all of the magic system. It works out as an interesting system with no pesky overlap. Every spell is different enough.

Similarly to the Huntress getting a different set of spells for Level 1, the Fairy will have different forms for Level 3.))

Sigrlinn blinks as Daphne quacks at her. "I'm sorry, I don't speak duck. I don't think I should try to mimic it, either." She looks around at the others in the swimming hole. "Could someone please be an interpreter for me?"

Piggie giggles (and the fairies laugh with her, except for Shirley, who whispers to Laverne, "I don't get it.").

Piggie says to Sigrlinn, "She's greeting you, and I think she likes the idea of you hunting with her. Unfortunately, that won't be possible unless you have the ability to learn transformation magic. Are you both magic users, by any chance?

"Oh, and Sigrlinn... I'm afraid you'd have to learn the Valkyrie form to hunt with Daphne. She only hunts from the air."

Kell tells Piggie, "The kentauride form sounds useful, but I am not an earth-magic caster. The mermaid form is where my heart is, and matches my magic. We've had a number of occasions already where a mermaid's form would have been useful. I can change in and out of the mermaid form at will, correct?"

Sigrlinn turns to Piggie and nods at her words. "I've already been learning air magic, so learning how to turn into a valkyrie would be perfect. I hope Brynhild won't mind me using a bow when I can give myself wings. ...Oh, and speaking of bows, I'll likely need to borrow one, and some arrows. I left mine in Sardis, and the one arrow I have with me isn't meant for hunting."

Piggie says, "The only limitations of these spells is that you need to make careful choices as to what you'll wear. If you desire the Valkyrie form, you'll want to wear a backless dress."

Daphne says, "QVAKT!"

"You make an interesting point, Daphne." Tuning to Sigrlinn, she goes on, "I can only work my magic on one of you at a time. Why don't to follow Daphne to her nest? She can surely find suitable clothing and a bow. By the time you return, Kell should have her mermaid ability, assuming she is able to learn it."

To Kell, she says, "You say you can make clothing from the elements, so if you intend to be a mermaid often, you'll need that. For now, I would ask that you remove your shoes and… well… you make drape your chiton over your legs for modesty, but…"

Shirley whispers the obvious: "The undies gotta go!" —and she's quite a loud whisperer for such a tiny person.

"So do you, Sis," says Moana.

"Right!" Moana agrees.

Laverne says to Sigrlinn, "Daphne's had a few crash-landings, so we can sort of tell what Daphne's saying."

"QVAKT?"

Laverne replies, "Why, I'd love some tea at your nest, Daphne. Thank you kindly."

"Qvakt." Daphne signals you to follow.

As the Duck Huntress flaps her wings and takes to the air, Laverne and Shirley sprinkle fairy dust on you. "Think happy thoughts!" says Shirley.

Moana stays by the water. She removes her hat and little white tights, then starts unbuttoning her healer-fairy dress…

Sigrlinn listens carefully to what Piggie says. "That's a good point about dresses. I'll have to modify my own if I want to wear it with wings."

She looks up as Laverne and Shirley sprinkle fairy dust onto her, and latches onto the happiest thoughts she can think of. Most o them are memories of Brynhild and her kindness and companionship in the north. She shuts her eyes to keep her focus turned inward.

Sigrlinn floats up, up, up like a balloon.

"Humans," Laverne and Shirley say to each other. They get behind Sigrlinn and push.

"QVAKT," says Daphne.
