((Don't forget; e5 for defense... but a natural 6 means defense is a success.))

You both dodge the attacks, unlike any of the men. The three you spoke to are muddied and likely bloodied, but they pick themselves up and manage to form a wall next to Sigrlinn.

"Ice, you say?" says the man with the mace.

"Do your magic while we're still here to protect you," says the shield-fighter.

The swordsman says nothing. He just attacks.
HAMster:2X3 → 3( (6x2, 4→ 3 successes against 3) )#sword guy
HAMster:1X3 → 0( (1→ 0 successes against 3) )#combo
He lands a solid blow on the first attack, splitting a bark mask with a crack! And he almost takes out a second creature, but misses.

The shield-fighter knocks one away from himself.
HAMster:2X3 → 1( (3, 1→ 1 success against 3) )#shield guy
But the creature appears unharmed.

"Oh, balls!"

Two converge on the man with the mace.
HAMster:2X3 → 2( (1, 6x2→ 2 successes against 3) )#mace guy
HAMster:1X3 → 2( (6x2→ 2 successes against 3) )#combo
HAMster:1X3 → 1( (5→ 1 success against 3) )#3rd strike
He smashes both masks into splinters, and the red glows of their eyes wisp away like smoke from an extinguished candle. After smashing a third creature to bits, he tells his men, "Take. No. Prisoners."

"No shit take no prisoners!" the shield-fighter snaps. "I didn't bring a giant frigging pain and shovel, did I!"

((You can't run, so attack. Kell is in a relatively safe position to cast. 4 bark-bites are dead; 3 men are still alive...))

Sigrlinn nods in gratitude to the men who stand beside her, and attacks one of the remaining bark-bites. Hopefully this attack will be stronger than her first.

Muttering, "Ahhh, crud," Kell changes gears and casts her Wave Dance spell, willing a flood of water to come from the right of the bark bites and either drown them or carry them away, but miss her and her friends.

((Oops. Roll should have been just 1x3, so take only the first 4)).

Nodding to the men in thanks, she readies herself for a possible next round of attacks.

((I think to keep life simple, casting requires you to roll the spell level. A combo means you can cast in the same round.))

Kell manages to get her spell out quickly. A ghostly wail echoes throughout the swamp. Though all of the masks remain intact, the creatures' muddy bodies appear diluted.

When Sigrlinn slashes at the nearest creature, the mud-water body splashes to the ground. Her thrust sends the bark mask flying into another creature, which falls apart easily!

((6 bark-bites dead + their defense is down for the next 5 rounds!
You can't tell how many remain, but...))

...like a five-headed hydra, bark-bites lurch over your party and strike!

HAMster: repeat 3 2e5 → 1; 0; 2( (4, 5→ 1 success against 5) );( (4, 1→ 0 successes against 5) );( (5, 5→ 2 successes against 5) )#def - mace, shld, swd

Two of the men dodge and parry the monsters, but one bites deep into the shield-fighter's armor. "Gaah! Useless hunka metal!" he growls.

((Roll defense vs. FIGHT!))

...but moving is tricky in the mud. Trickier than she thought!

Despite the mud, the water she just introduced to the area actually makes moving easier for Kell.

Kell manages to dive out of the way (with amazing grace!). As for Sigrlinn, a creature bites into her armor. Its wooden teeth sink into her shoulder, and the monster emits a horrible stench!

((-1HP to Sigrlinn. The stink doesn't do anything other than maybe gross her out.

Sig: 3/4HP
Kell: 4/4HP))

The men start to strike back, though the shield-fighter staggers as he steps into his strike…

HAMster: repeat 3 2x3 → 2; 2; 1( (4, 3→ 2 successes against 3) );( (3, 4→ 2 successes against 3) );( (4, 2→ 1 success against 3) )#attacks mace Windu, shield Jackson, and sword McMoughin

All five of the creatures that just attacked you die in a spectacular splash! But there are more…

((11 dead. And you still get to attack before they do!
A NOTE about unarmed strike: only combo rolls inflict damage.))

Sigrlinn yelps in pain as the bark-bite sinks its teeth in her shoulder, and gags on the stink that arises. But the knights quickly kill it, as well as its companions.

...Though not all of them, as she soon sees. Sigrlinn bares her teeth and attacks the first bark-bite who gets within reach...

A sword forms in Kell's hands. It's not the most durable thing, but it'll do. As for Sigrlinn, she managed to drop two more of the monsters. Likely, you'll kill them all before Kell's water spell wears off…

HAMster: repeat 3 2e5 → 0; 0; 1( (2, 3→ 0 successes against 5) );( (3, 4→ 0 successes against 5) );( (4, 6→ 1 success against 5) )#def mace, shld, swd

Unfortunately, they're taking at least one more knight with them. The man with the mace is again clobbered as a bark mask shatters against his helm. The swordsman manages to block his opponent. As for the shield-fighter, he doesn't even see the attack coming—

—but the inside of his helm glows bright red. He turns to you crying out in agony, but his scream turns to a gurgling sound. Reddish brown liquid sprays from his armor. In the next instant, he explodes!

((Roll defense vs. MAGIC to avoid the blast!))

Sigrlinn cries out in alarm and disgust as the shield-fighter explodes, and throws up her arms to shield herself from the blast.

((Man, Sig's really out of her element today. Pun not intended but I'm keeping it anyway. XD))

Kell keeps her eyes on the bark bites but still winces when the swordsman dies.

Leaping to the side, she avoids the blast.

"You okay, Sig?"

Kell manages to dash out of the splash zone, but Sigrlinn finds herself doused with muddy innards! It's painful, but Kell's water spell seems to have diluted the effect. A wave of pure water cleans the sticky remains of the dead man and beast off of her.

((Sigrlinn has 2/4 HP!))

"Bastards!" shouts the man with the bastard sword. The one with the mace says, "I'll avenge you, Sir Jackson." Both rush into the fray enraged bashing the leaping elementals. Splinters and watery blobs of mud fly!
HAMster: repeat 2 2x3 → 3; 3( (6x2, 3→ 3 successes against 3) );( (4, 6x2→ 3 successes against 3) )#mace, swd atk
HAMster: repeat 2 1x3 → 1; 1( (4→ 1 success against 3) );( (5→ 1 success against 3) )#both combo'd
They've taken down eight of them. There are still a few red-eyed glows left… but maybe your attacks will be enough to finish them!

((21 bark-bites are dead! Finish off the remaining monsters! ATTACK!!))

Kell slices at the bark-bites. Her attacks feel weak, but they get the job done.

"Take THAT!"

Sigrlinn staggers slightly at the wave of muddy innards that douses her, and gasps in reply to Kell, "Still standing!"

When she's cleansed by a wave of clean water, she's ready to attack the bark-bites again.

Kelleia kills two of the creatures, and the magic from her blade freezes two more! Sigrlinn kills another two.

Only three remain in addition to the two frozen ones, which are now frozen arches. Their glowing eyes glare through their icy prison!

The two men deflect attacks…
HAMster:2E5 → 1( (4, 6→ 1 success against 5) )#def
HAMster:2E5 → 1( (2, 5→ 1 success against 5) )#rerolling since I goofed
…and only one creature is free to attack one of you. It leaps at Kell!

((@Kell, def vs. FIGHT!))
((Both of you, finish off the enemy—very likely, you'll kill all 30 and save two out of three knights!!!))

Kell again uses the water in the mud to help her slide out of the way of the bark-bite.

"It seems my luck is about as good as yours is bad today," she tells Sigrlinn, raising her blade and attacking again.

Her luck is in again, and she chops at the bark-bite with her ice blade.

Kell fends off the attack, and both of you lash out at the remaining three monsters, each taking one out in a single blow--

The largest one doesn't die so easily. Its bark is merely scratched by the next strike from knife and sword, but when Sigrlinn thrusts her knife again, she penetrates the bark-bite's glowing eye! Kell brings her blade down in an overhead strike with such force, her sword shatters! The monster flies apart in frozen chunks! The two that were already frozen share its fate...

((30/30 bark-bites are dead!
Sigrlinn has 2/4 hp.
Kell has 4/4 hp.
Captain Windu has 1/3 hp.
Squire McMoughin has 2/3 hp.
All other knights are dead.))

The captain looks over his fallen army. He introduces himself and the squire who served under "Sir Jackson, rest his soul.

"It sounds like you both have an important task ahead of you, if you seek an audience with Hera herself. If she is willing to see you, tell her to watch over the amazons. A man paid us well to join a force against Queen Hippolyta--Hera's own granddaughter! Who would have such nerve?

"I have no quarrel with the amazons. Only these strange monsters that keep appearing. Tragically, this bunch nearly wiped us all out. If not for you two, this squire would have died well before his time."

The squire says nothing. He simply removes his helmet and kneels before you. He looks to be about seventeen, though he must be at least 6'4". His facial features suggest he's more athlete than scholar. The captain is an older moustached man with dark skin.

Sigrlinn sighs in relief as the last of the monsters die. She smiles as the knight introduces himself and the squire. "I'm Sigrlinn Tofisdottir, and this is Kell Silvertide. You're right that we have important thing to do, and to talk with Hera about. I'm glad we got here in time to help you first. And I'm sorry for your losses."
