Ch.5 "Lost Souls" / Kell and Sigrlinn

Dark Lord
Kell says with a sigh, "Well, I don't feel like I carried my weight in that little scuffle. But I suppose the important thing is we made it through in one piece."

"I hope the door to this Knight's Club place is open so we can fly in OK."

Knight Club

There are big burly metal men screening the Iron Maidens as they enter the club. None are actually barred from entering. Inside the castle, maidens are packed like ants on the dance floor. The male-looking robots stand like bodyguards, but they really don't do anything but look nightly.

What passes for music sounds like the throbbing of a billion synchronized hearts and terse instrumental sounds like what a horn might sound like if you blew it and lightning came out. Colored glass globes of light flash. The maidens dance in jerky motions. There is something tribal about the dance, and you're not sure if the dance is made for zero partners or multiple partners at once.

So far, nobody notices your metal fly...

Sigrlinn doesn't know what to think of the music in the club, except that it feels very appropriate for the audience. She steers the metal fly over the heads of the crowd, looking out for any sign of Heph. He shouldn't be too hard to spot, being flesh and blood among so many metal people.

The music inspires Kell to think of dance moves she could use, but she quickly shakes the mood off and starts scanning through the metal maidens for signs of Heph. Somehow, she can't help but think he will have a ton of them crowding around him.

She suggests to Sigrlinn, "Maybe we can make a methodical sweep of the building?"

You zip around, finding a systematic way to move about the crowd...

After a few minutes, the music slows down.......

.....then stops. All of the metal knights and maidens appear to be frozen in time.

Letters form on your windows:

You are being judged.

The gold button flashes. No other controls are responsive, and the fly wings stopped moving. So while you're expected to press the gold button your vehicle is falling straight down toward the currently-immobile crowd!

((Roll GRACE! S#2x3 / K#4x3 -- skill check, not defense))

Sigrlinn yelps and smacks the gold button, not knowing what to expect.

Kell punches her gold button since it's the only choice open to her. Maybe that will stop their plummet toward the ground!

The fly stops falling and is suspended in midair.

"Oh, my," says a woman's voice. "Both of you are equally in a state of grace. What am I to do?"

You look out the window and see a woman who has a spider body from the waist down. She is under an inch tall, but still larger than your fly. You are like fairy-sized next to her. Your controls are useless.

Fortunately, the half of her that would eat looks human. She probably can't eat a metal fly.

Plus, she looks friendly. And stylish. She's wearing a sleeveless shirt and sleeveless jacket with coat tails that drape over her spider body. Her spider legs are shaven and waxed and shod in pointy brown shoes.

"Why not come out of that silly machine? It's caught in my web, but I can carry you so you don't get stuck too." She holds out her hand, so you can climb out of the fly and step onto her palm.

Sigrlinn stays where she is, frowning at the spider-lady and trying to figure out what she's up to.

Ch.5 "Lost Souls" / Kell and Sigrlinn

Kell smiles at the spider-woman and says, "You know, I have never met one such as yourself before. I must say, you have quite good taste in clothing. Would you mind telling us where you would be taking us? We haven't seen exactly found the beings we've met here so far to be friendly."

As she speaks, Kell studies the woman intently, looking for anything that seems suspicious or 'off', such as signs of discomfort, anxiety, or seeming a little too eager for Kell and Sigrlinn to accompany her. She blesses Aphrodite for requiring all nymphs attending the villa to attend a class on how to read people.

The lady sees you're both hesitant. She looks apologetic at first and lets out a sympathetic "oh…"

But she smiles softly when Kell speaks to her. "Why thank you! So you like the outfits I made you, then? You obviously appreciate my talent more than Hera did. It's why I look the way I do. If you come with me, I have new outfits in mind. You will need them."

Kell has reason to believe Arachne's words are sincere. She seems to have a plan in mind, but it's a subtle version of the sort of look Kell has seen before when Niobe or a friendly nymph had planned to present a gift or throw a surprise party.

Kell looks at Sigrlinn and says, "I think we can trust her," then takes Arachne's hand if it is still offered and climbs out of the fly.

"This kind of look is new to me, and I'm not normally one for mini-skirts, but I do love the bronze and the boots are to die for. Plus, assuming there are few human males my size here, I am probably reasonably safe from being jeered at."

Sigrlinn follows Kell, willing to trust her friend's judgment about the spider-lady. She tips her hat as a show of respect.

Sigrlinn may be used to this size, but being in the palm of one's hand is a completely new sensation for Kelleia. Arachne is gentle with you both.

"You will need new outfits. At least if you two are willing to take on a little job I've in mind. Hera's son is here, and he could use some advisors. All of his metal friends here do exactly as he wishes, so there's no point. But you two being of the flesh as I am might be perfect for the job.

"I'd advise him myself, but I'm doing all I can to keep up with the production of his metal maidens."

When you enter her lair, you see several tapestries.

One is of Artemis with some nymphs waist-deep in a lake. Artemis' cheeks are pink, and her moth covered. Directly behind Artemis are some bubbles.

Another is of Artemis' birth, which lobotomizes Zeus as the goddess leaps out of her father's forehead, looking like an armored fairy with a meatball-sized chunk of brain skewered on her sword.

On a third, Dionysus is making a futile attempt to catch his spilling wine glass in flight as he is thrown off his horse, which just crashed into a tree.

On the fourth wall is the most beautiful tapestry by far. It's Hera sitting seductively, yet innocently, in bed. She is wearing a wedding gown and looks young and happy.

"I call this series The Gods' Follies," she says. "I won't offend anyone hanging them here."

There are some metal flies parked in the lair. Metal men your size are busy making shoes for Arachne.

Suspended by webs are two outfits. One looks like a white and gold valkyrie's outfit, with silky wings sewn onto the back. Another is a pair of reddish-bronze pants that look like satyr's legs, but with a long pointy tail. There are two horned helmets that each match the color schemes of the outfits.

The outfits are fairy-sized. Not like how you compare to Arachne, but how a fairy compares to the metal knights and maidens below. The outfits are several times Arachne's height and you would be like pocket lint.

"These are the advisors' outfits." She asks you both, "Which do you prefer? Since you are both seen in equally good graces, feel free to choose your preference. If you both choose the same outfit, I can make another in no time."

Sigrlinn nods slowly as the spider-woman speaks of the task she has in mind. "You mean Heph, don't you. That's why we came here in the first place -- to see if we can convince him to come back to the mortal realm and help us fight the gods who want us destroyed."

She admires the tapestries in silent awe, knowing she could never achieve anything so beautiful. And the outfits are no less lovely. Sigrlinn runs her fingers lightly over the wings on the white and gold outfit. "I'll take this one, please."

"Very well," says Arachne. "I'll need you to stand…" She directs Sigrlinn to a spot directly under the valkyrie dress. "…here."

Turning to Kell, she says, "You may choose the other outfit, or I can make another like your friend's."

Dark Lord
Kell asks Arachne, "You said we would need the outfits. Do they grant any special abilities?"

Kell isn't thrilled about the idea of wearing pants that resemble satyr's legs (she wonders to herself, 'Can a satyr have poise and grace?') but she doesn't want to throw away a useful ability, either. And she definitely doesn't want to malign Arachne's generosity.

Sigrlinn moves to stand under the valkyrie dress, looking to the spider-woman for further instructions. "I don't think I caught your name. I'm Sigrlinn."
