((Not sure if that 2 let me hit, even with the 6, but I figured I'd try the combo just in case!))

((The combo was allowed, but your total never reached 5, so no hits. No biggie. I didn't hit him either!))

Apollo dodges easily, stands his ground, and shoots.

Wasting no time, Kell immediately moves in to attack with her deadly ice blades:

((LS: You didn't say what happened after Kell's failed defense last round. Not sure if the minor effect happened before he could attack and therefore she wasn't hurt, or what.))

Slipping past the man's guard, she attacks again:

Sigrlinn tries again to dodge, and this time she isn't so lucky...

But she still has the strength to shoot back!

Kell

((Oh—right, sorry!))

Though still a bit woozy from a hammer to the gut, Kell gracefully twirls, slicing into the mysterious assassin.

This hurts the man quite a bit, but also enrages him. His wings become engulfed in flames, melting the ice and…

Apollo's ability to dodge is rather godlike. High Five takes damage. "Systems at 50%," says Penni. She then tries to smash the Olympian, who continues to stand boldly…

((Dodge and attack again.))

Seeing the man's wings become aflame, Kell raises her shield

but misjudges the direction of the attack.

Still, she moves to attack again:

"Oh, have I told you lately how much I care?" (Combo)

Sigrlinn evades attack after attack, and hits Apollo with everything she's got! But both are excellent at dodging, and not all of Sigrlinn's blows meet their mark.

Still, when it counts...

"That's for Kell and Kell-Pi!"

"That's for Dimki!"

"And that's for Nikki!"

...it really counts!

...beams of searing heat melt Kell's shield. She feels the burn! Her clothing and blade are warped from the combination of fire magic's destruction and ice magic's creation. Like her ice spell, Kell refuses to fall. She manages to strike her opponent, who immediately turns his back to flee and fly--but Kell's second strike tears off a wing!

Losing a wing does not draw blood, but does prevent him from getting any higher than the roof.

(Part of the ceiling is gone! This apparently happened while Kell was being struck by the beams of heat and light--though from the sounds of things, the now-one-winged man might be taking advantage of destruction caused by another attacker.)

A heap of rubble will help Kell chase the man as he flees on the rooftop.

((POWER #2X3 = climb quickly!

GRACE #4X3 = careful steps))

Kell hears a rhythmic clopping. Helix assures her he is in the house and should be with her any second...

Using her natural grace, Kell starts climbing the rubble:

((The triple is worthless, but 1 is enough.))

Kelleia takes her time and gets to the rooftop.

When she does, she sees an iron giantess, nearly twenty feet tall! It rises from the rubble and dodges a hunk of gold hurled its way. The one winged man calls to the man who hurled the machine:

"I've done your dirty deed! You owe me!"

The man ignores him and aims his bow at the giant metal maiden. Kell is too far to help, and even her opponent has quite a lead. The man is fast as he runs along the rooftop, leaping gaps caused by the destruction of the mansion.

But Helix offers Kell a ride.

((If you attack:
2X3 to hurl ice javelins--a successful combo hit can include a minor effect
4X3 to charge and attack with ice blade--combo hits are needed to reach the enemy with a charge))

Sigrlinn

Apollo stands his ground against the mechanical maidens and their pilots. Sigrlinn fails to dodge one of Apollo's arrows, but once she steers MH5 out of the rubble, she manages to dodge and deflect the next two attacks. As for Apollo, he simply wills Sigrlinn's shots away. When Penni hits the fight button to smash him, he sidesteps casually, zipping twenty feet away in a sudden motion. Penni looks ready to smash the console when she and Sigrlinn back the golden archer into a corner with coordinated attacks--which both pilots fail to capitalize on...

Then Sigrlinn focuses and her shot tears through armor and flesh. She fires again, blasting off the Olympian's right arm and a large portion of his torso. Her final shot leaves a crater where the sun god made his last stand.

It seems the term 'immortal' is an exaggeration. Perhaps the term 'god' is as well. In any case, young Penni doesn't bother to contemplate this. She just throws her arms around Sigrlinn and says, "Best! Pilot! Ever! I knew you could do it! I knew it I knew it I KNEW it!"

Sigrlinn barely has time to process what she's done to Apollo before Penni is congratulating her and wrapping her in a hug that squeezes the breath from her. Sigrlinn smiles and pats Penni on the back, then turns back to the smoking crater where Apollo stood.

"Is he really dead?" she asks. "Or did we just destroy his body? What if he makes himself a new one?"

Kell quickly mounts Helix, telling him, "We charge the one-winged man." Signaling the unicorn into action, Kell bends low over Helix's withers as the two race toward their quarry.

"My friend Heph taught me to be generous!"

Kell charges! The one-winged man is fast, but Helix is faster! The man sprouts a wing of fire from his back, replacing the severed one...

But as he lifts off, Kell's blade strikes true. The flying man spirals down into a hole in the rooftop. He drops out of sight, landing in a fiery crash!

Sigrlinn

Penni says, "I don't know. Heph would know. We can ask him."

She perks up when she sees Kell. "Oh! Your friend woke up and rides a horsey. Can we ride too?"

Sigrlinn follows Penni's gaze, smiling in relief. She looks back at Penni and says, "I'm sure they won't mind. Let's get over there and talk to them. By the way, the 'horsey' is a unicorn, and his name's Helix."

Kell says quietly, "Heph...may be dead. That winged man stabbed him with a strange blade that was sucking all of the light away. We should get back to him and see if there's anything we can do for him, and Aphrodite needs to be told. "

"And I'd like to make sure the winged man is really dead."

She tells Penni, "Normally I wouldn't mind you riding Helix with me at all. But getting down off of the mansion may be a rough ride. Can you wait until we're back on the ground?"

"Where are the rest of the maidens? Are they okay?" Kell's stomach clenches as she asks this question. 'My fault...my fault...my fault,' repeats in her mind.

Penni has MH5 sit down on the roof. She then becomes a bird and offers Sigrlinn a ride to Kell's side of the mansion. Or what's left of it.

Once Sigrlinn dismounts Penni, she becomes fairy-shaped again and answers Kell's questions:

"The maidens formed Mile-High Five! And I was the pilot because Nikki and Dimki got hurt. Oh! And I was really the co-pilot because I let Sigrlinn do all the evasive stuff. She's awesome! And she blew that mean Apollo away! We can tell Heph and he can make Dimki and Ni………

"Wait.

"Somebody hurt Heph? Or………?" Her little metal face looks like it would cry if it could. "Did that kid kill him?"

When Kell and Sigrlinn over the edge, they see a naked boy with wings on his back. "Father?" he asks. But no one is there. "Where did you go, Dad? Where…? Am I…?" He looks at his hands. "I'm alive?"

Penni says, "The boy is not dressed appropriately for concealing a knife."

Sigrlinn accepts the ride to the roof, and listens in horror to what Kell has to say. She puts an arm around Penni, fighting back tears of her own. Apollo may have deserved what he got, but Heph sure as Hel didn't!

Then she peers over the edge of the roof and catches sight of the winged boy. "Wha... who is that?"

tbgg

Dark Lord
Kell calls down to the boy, "What's your name, lad? What is the last thing you remember doing?"

She says to her allies in soft tones, "The person who attacked Heph was an adult, and he told Apollo he'd done what Apollo asked. I wonder if some form of magic was used to borrow the boy's body."
