Ch.4L: "Lost Souls" / Sigrlinn's POV

"And the fairies?" a woman asks.

"Both alive. One's working on the Huntress."

That's Amber. You didn't know her long, but you recognize her voice. You can't actually see her—or see anything for that matter. You're too weak to move even an eyelid.

"But we lost a nymph."

"Only one."

"Is that how you would have said it if she were one of yours?"

"No, I… I just just mean we're fortunate. If not for your arrow…"

The voices seem to fade. You feel two very tiny fingers walking across your bare chest. You feel more tiny sensations—

Then a voice rapidly squeaks, "I'm losing her!"

There's an electrical charge (from what you now realize are not tiny fingertips, but fairy hands)!

"…had plans for this nymph. We can't afford to lose her."

BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

The woman speaking must be a titan, judging by the way she walks.

"Aaaaaannnnnd hooooowwwww arrrrrrre yoooooou feeeeeelllliiiiiiinggg, Hunnnnnntresssss?"

For some reason she's talking very slowly. And when she does, her voice is almost like a man's. Yet somehow you're sure it's the same person.

The least you could do is open up your eyes and talk to her.

So you do.

But what you notice is your two hands pressed down on a mountain of freckled skin. At its peak is a nipple the size of your hand.

And speaking of your hands, they look oddly unfamiliar to you. So do your arms for that matter. They're bony and tan, lacking in freckles or even the finest hair.

As for the titan's hand, index-to-pinky is head-to-toe for you. You aren't an expert on how titans compare to humans. It's just that the hand is reaching for you. Very slowly. You could probably step out of the way if you wanted to.

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn listens to the voices, not that she has much choice in the matter. She's surprised she can hear anything right now.

The tiny voice cries out in fright. An electrical charge jolts through Sigrlinn, and she panics for a moment, thinking of Zeus--

--but the other voice still speaks, and then come footsteps. Huge ones. And the voice is huge too, suddenly. But Sigrlinn isn't sure she feels up to answering the question.

She opens her eyes, and starts in surprise. Those arms in front of her don't look like they belong to her at all. In fact, the enormous freckled breast she's pushing down on looks more like hers, but for the size. Is she dreaming? Is she inside the head of the fairy who's keeping her body alive?

A huge hand reaches for her. Sigrlinn tries to dodge, not sure if this body she's in will even obey her.

embed

The fairy body does what you want--just not quickly enough.

But the giant's hand is gentle. And as you expected, it's yours. So is the voice, when she speaks, though the voice is deep and slow.

"I didn't mean to startle you," you say. Or she says--she being whoever is in your body--who you probably guessed is...

"Phoebe?"

The voice calling out to you is strange. You turn to see Sapphire fluttering beside you--'you' being the you in the body that is no bigger than Sapphire's. She sounds like an ordinary woman and doesn't talk so fast, at least not when heard by fairy ears.

"Up here," Phoebe replies through your mouth.

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn looks up into her own huge face, still trying to understand what's going on. This is even stranger than those times she passed out when trying to beast-speak. She turns to Sapphire and says, "Something got switched around, somehow. Are the others alright? Kell?" She remembers hearing of a nymph who was "lost", clearly because of the lightning, and wonders which one it is.

Sapphire still seems confused, but decides your question deserves an answer.

"I'm sorry…" she starts.

But she's cut off by the pounding footsteps headed in your direction. You turn to see the woman making all that noise is walking more delicately than anyone. It's Aphrodite.

(You're pretty sure she wasn't in the area when Zeus showed up. But then, you're indoors now, and are pretty sure any cabin near the lake has been reduced to ashes.)

"Everyone's sorry," Aphrodite says, though her irate tone is not directed at the fairy, but at a dark-haired Huntress dressed in an earthen toga. The toga only covers her left shoulder. Her right breast is exposed.

—Unlike yours, as Phœbe now feels compelled to cover up with the bedsheets, as likely for you comfort as for her own.

The nymph goddess goes on, "And I'm sorry too! Sorry I let you talk me into this!"

Aphrodite strokes Kell's hair, then takes her limp hand into her own. "She saved my marriage, Artemis. She may not have known it, but she wasn't just another nymph to me. I wanted something special for her and I trusted you and…"

Artemis patiently waits for Aphrodite to find the words. But all Aphrodite comes up with.

"…now my youngest sister is dead."

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn looks from Aphrodite to Artemis, then to Kell. As realization hits, her throat constricts and her eyes fill with tears. She tries to speak, but no words come, and she just weeps.

Aphrodite sees you crying and then says to Artemis, "Is that a healer fairy?"

"She is."

"And you had her heal your Huntress."

"I did."

Aphrodite is probably not too crazy about you being the priority to Artemis, and you may be feeling rather guilty about it yourself. It may be best for everyone that Artemis doesn't explain why she chose you over Kell.

"Well, your Huntress is alive, so I need to borrow your fairy."

She grabs you out of your hand. I mean your human hand, which is sort of Phœbe's hand and you're in Phœbe's body so maybe Aphrodite grabbed her. But it sure feels like it's you whose being picked up in the goddess' huge hand. And Aphrodite's skin is very soft by the way. The feeling is surprisingly comfortable.

Her perfect lips purse in a way that conveys many negative emotions yet is strikingly gorgeous.

"You can heal my Kelleia, can you not, Healer Fairy?"

"Uh…" That's Phœbe speaking. In your voice. "…technically, I don't think she can."

"Are you saying she used all her magic to save you?"

"Uh…"

Phœbe makes an expression suggesting she could probably use some help with the explanation since this whole body-swapping thing is confusing to her. That's actually a lot to read from a facial expression. But then again, she is making the expression with your face.

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn doesn't know what she's feeling right now, aside from a lot of hurt and confusion. Emotional hurt, not physical. Aphrodite is gentle, and if Zeus wounded her before, Sigrlinn can't feel it anymore. She hiccups as she tries to compose herself. When she's able to speak, her voice is hoarse. "Wh-what am I supposed to do? Even if Phoebe's body has magic in it, I don't kn-know how to use it! I'm a H-Huntress, not a healer!"

She looks at Kell again, swallowing hard. "If she's... dead, and we can't heal her, does that mean we m-might have to get her back from Hades ourselves?" Sigrlinn tries and fails to remember if it's ever been mentioned whose side Hades is on, if any but his own. What if he's allied with Zeus?

No one seems to know what you're talking about. Aphrodite asks, "Who's Phœbe?"

Sapphire flies next to you and explains the whole body-swapping thing. It actually takes a very long time. You tune out this part of the conversation.

Artemis says, "So Sigrlinn's soul is in Phœbe's body, and Phœbe's is in hers… I wonder. Where is Kell's soul?"

Aphrodite snaps, "Where do you thi—"

She stops talking rather abruptly to glare out the window, but her look softens.

"Oh, yes. Helix. I'd sort of forgotten about him. I suppose if you wish to know the whereabouts of Kell's soul, you can ask Helix. Might anyone here speak Horse?"

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn calms down considerably at the notion that Kell's soul is in Helix's body. She takes a deep breath and says, "I can try Beast-speaking. Though there is a chance I'll be stuck in Helix's head for a while."
Sigrlinn takes another deep breath and seeks out Helix's mind...

For some reason, you seem to lack the talent to beast-speak, which is odd. That seems to be the sort of magic tied to the soul, not the body.

Helix looks at you expectantly and Whinnies.

"Well?"
Aphrodite asks, "What did he say?"

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn flushes in confusion and embarrassment. "I don't know. I can't beast-speak right now for some reason." She looks at Helix and bites her lip. "I'm not sure what to do now."

Aphrodite seems rather annoyed, but makes an effort to speak quietly so as not to hurt your tiny fairy ears.

"Perhaps you can just normal-speak to Helix. He probably understands regular words. Do you not, Helix?"

Helix clops a hoof and nods his head.

"That is probably a yes. Still,
you talk to him, Tiny Huntress. You're the animal expert."

Artemis' tone is far more encouraging you, now that she is finally speaking to you for the first time (as far as you know).

"I know this is challenging, Sigrlinn. But I believe this body-swapping is temporary. I'm sure Phœbe wants her body back as badly as you do, so we can count on the fairies and their King for help. Go ahead and talk to Helix for now. Maybe he can tell us about Kell's state in his own way."

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn is even more embarrassed at forgetting the simple option (and having Aphrodite annoyed doesn't help), but she does her best to hide it.

"Helix, do you know where Kell is? I mean, her soul?" She expects one or two hoof-clomps for 'yes' or 'no', and mentally prepares to ask more questions until they get the answer they're looking for.

Helix nods (while clopping once), then lifts his hoof, pointing to Kell's body.

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn moves a little closer to Kell, then looks up at the goddesses. Especially Aphrodite. "I don't understand. You said she was dead! How can her soul still be in her body if that's so?"

"She's not breathing," Phœbe says. "Is she?"

Helix shakes his head.

"But her soul is still there in a body that ceased to function?"

Helix nods.

Sapphire says, "So what do we do about that?"

Helix just looks at Sapphire, then at Phœbe, then at you. He says, "P-p-p-p-p-pbbbbb." If Helix could shrug and make a W of his front legs, he probably would have.

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn clenches her (or, well, Phoebe's) fists, pacing up and down her own torso's breastbone. The goddesses are being very quiet about this. If there's an obvious solution here, Sigrlinn isn't seeing it. She doesn't know how to make a person start breathing again after they've stopped!

Artemis sees you are having difficulty. She says, "Surely there's a reason Kell is refusing to leave her body. Maybe she senses that there is hope. A healer fairy isn't powerful enough. Maybe none of us have the kind of magic that can save her."

Aphrodite says, "You know what else none of you have? A husband."

"No offense meant," Amber says to Aphrodite, "but what is your point?"

"That you're looking at the magic you lack, when magic may not even provide a solution."

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn pauses for a moment to think, looking between Aphrodite and Kell. The goddess's talk of husbands ignites the spark of an idea. "Where's Vin? Is he what we need?"

Sapphire says, "Oh… I meant to tell you—but we never did get a break since Nyse! Vin and Buck are on their first mission. You were unconscious for… how many days? Well, the men head out today or tomorrow, if I understood their schedule right. And if it didn't change since a lot can happen in a week. We'd have to take the Hearthland if we're to catch them in time. If there is time."

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn winces as she remembers. It's been a long day, or week, or whatever; it completely slipped her mind where Vin was up to. "Well, if that's where we have to go, then we should get going. I'm all out of ideas otherwise." And that just makes her more frustrated. She starts pacing again, wracking her brain as she waits for confirmation one way or the other. If finding Vin isn't the answer, there has to be something she can do!

Artemis' Cabin

Artemis leads you to her fireside, where a large boar is roasting.

"This one died in the fire. Now I'm keeping him warm so the meat won't turn."

Her nymphs fix plates for you and the fairies—one of whom is about to learn how much your human body can eat! And you'll learn how sharp fairy teeth are, and the power of that tiny digestive system. Sapphire will assure you meat won't be a problem, should you express any concerns about giving Phœbe any sort of health problem.

Hearthland

You get a chance to talk to the fairies, seeing them eye-to-eye for the first time. Midori seems especially interested in your predicament. "I think you make a great fairy, even if you're stuck in Phœbe's body and will have to give it back… however you'd do that!"

But she goes on to tell you that Buck and Vincent are sailing to their next destination, and they depart from the south side of Arcadia.

Artemis' Cabin Again

When you come out of the fire, Artemis sees you fed while Aphrodite supervises her nymphs. The nymphs are loading Kell's body onto a cart. It's the same cart that was used to take the Alpha nymphs, but the horse that was pulling it that day was spooked by the forest fire. Helix will pull the cart.

As for Phœbe, she is having a difficult time controlling your body. "I can't get the legs to work," she says. "I would think they work the same as fairy legs."

She is now seated upright, and Artemis had her nymphs dress your human form in fine furs. The goddess has adjusted her own clothing to appear more modest herself. She places dollhouse furniture on her table, explaining, "Heather and her hobbies." She gestures toward a dollhouse cut from red cedar. Even through tiny fairy eyes, the detail in the woodwork is impressive. The dolls in the house are made of cloth with real animal fur for hair. Someone else may have made the dolls, judging by the difference in artistic style. A doll with fox fur for hair has woad-colored markings on her face and limbs as Lily did. "You remember Heather from the Moon Boat, don't you?"

You do recall meeting Heather. And Lily, Rose, Susan, Ivy and Violet. They were the ones on the Moon Boat. Dawn, Eve, Amber, Beatrice and Candice—Candi and Beach—they were the Alphas. It seems that none of the nymphs fell to Zeus' attack except for Kell. And there may be hope for her too.

Things didn't go as planned. Not even close. But here you are, face to face with Artemis. You only have a short time as getting Kell to Arcadia seems to be urgent. Aphrodite seems especially interested in this direction you've chosen. But it won't to Kell any good to run off without her, so you may as well talk to Artemis. There isn't much a wingless fairy can do about hoisting a human body onto a cart. How much can a fairy lift, anyway? Do you even weigh an ounce?

Sigrlinn accepts a fairy-sized plate of meat from Artemis, but with everything on her mind right now she doesn't have much of an appetite. And it seems selfish now to even spare a thought for herself and her lack of memories, with Kell in the condition she's in. But a fairy can't help with the cart, and when is she going to have the chance to talk to Artemis again?

"First... thank you for saving us." Best get that out of the way sooner rather than later. "There's so much I want to ask... but I'm not sure if it's safe for me to have the answers. Not with Zeus and Apollo and whoever else hunting us. I don't want to give them more reasons to want to kill me."

"My father wants you dead. Nothing can change that. Not what you know, or don't know, or don't know you know. There are things you should be afraid of, but asking me questions isn't among them."

Artemis looks rough, but her voice is not. She speaks gently and has a rather humble appearance. The way she has your human body dressed would probably make an uninformed observer think Artemis is the Huntress and Phœbe in your body is the goddess.

Sapphire is spoon-feeding Phœbe. Phœbe takes the occasional drink from the goblet held in your right hand. Her left hand is on her lap. The human-sized (or nymph-and-goddess-sized?) silverware on either side of her plate is clean.

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn nods slowly and takes a deep breath. "Before he blocked out all my memories, Loki said... he said that 'she' wouldn't kill me to get at whatever message is in my mind. I think he means whoever blocked the message in the first place... but who is that? Was it you?"

"I was expecting you to deliver a message, but I didn't realize you wouldn't know what the message is. I know who the message is from though.

"I can tell you who, if you would like to know. What I can't tell you is which brain the message is in. Though if your soul switched bodies and you still don't know what you've come to tell me, my guess would be that the message is in your original brain."

Phœbe perks up at Artemis' words. "I might know how to get the memory out… I mean… I need my body to do it, but…" She turns to you. "You're the one controlling my body. I can tell tell you what to do with my hands, but I'm not sure how to explain how to use my magic. We can try anyway if you want to."

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn bites her lip. "Who is the message intended for? I think I should know that, and where to find them, before we try to find the message itself. I take it you aren't the one who blocked out the message, then." It's something of an indirect answer, but at least it's an answer.

"The message is for me. It is from Brunhild. Do you know who that is?"

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn nods. "The goddess of battle we worship in the north. I also have a friend who's named for her. She helped me after Loki destroyed my village and took my memories."

"You're partially correct. The part where your memory has failed you is that the two Brunhilds you are talking about are the same person. She and her Valkyrie intervened on your behalf when Loki attacked.

"Loki aligned himself with Zeus, whose plan is to overthrow Asgard. Should the Asgardians fail to protect the north, people lose faith, and Zeus assumed they would turn to the Olympians. Brunhild and I agreed that the inverse would be true, should the west realize that Olympus sees its subjects as mere pawns.

"Gaia has abandoned this world to her children, and with each generation, the gods have become more like mortals. Some are like Judge Xarris, who loved nothing more than his own power. Some are like you and Kell and your magical little friends here… though Phœbe isn't so little at the moment."

Artemis turns to your human body.

"Sigrlinn, why don't you see what kind of magic is in that little fairy body. There must be a way to get that memory out of your head…"

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn gapes for a moment at the idea that she was aided by a goddess even before coming south. Maybe she should focus on devoting herself to Brynhild in the future -- assuming she survives this clash of gods she and her friends are tangled in. For right now, she might be best off as a Huntress.

If she can get her own body back, that is! Artemis' talk of magic sobers her, and Sigrlinn turns her focus inward, trying to get a sense of what she can do with this body she's borrowing.

embed

Apparently, not a whole lot. There are colorful sparks emanating from your fairy fingers, but you have no idea what to do with all this colored light. You actually don't even know what it is you're trying to cast, but probably not this.

"Well," says Sapphire, "you never tried fairy magic before because you've never been a fairy. Don't give up."

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn takes that as a cue to try again, and does so...

embed

This time, her hands don't even light up.

Phœbe says, "It's okay. I can't even move your hands. I can move one, but not both. I think your body is too big for me!"

"Try again," Sapphire says.

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn takes a deep breath, focusing again...

embed

...is this better than the first time? She's not sure.

Sigrlinn's hands glow reddish gold, and at first she's too focused on her fairy-hands to realized she is projecting a beam through her own head!

"You did it!" says Phœbe. Which is good. Because if she didn't say that, you'd probably be very worried about what you just did you both her and your own human head. But now you can sort of relax—as much as one can while pressing glowing hands against a gigantic head and just now discovering you couldn't remove your fairy-hands from your human-head even if you wanted to—

—and you can watch the image coming out of your right temple and into the hearth. Judging by the way the image is in bright hues of red, white and gold, you apparently cast a Hearthvision spell!

Hearthvisionâ„¢

BRUNHILD: "Arty, thank you for seeing my follower here safely. Unfortunately, there is infighting on our side too. There are those who wish to defeat Olympus and bar all of you from the mountain, those who wish to side with Zeus and claim the northwest with intent to overthrow the southern gods, and of course you can count on me and the Valkyrie to help you oppose Zeus.

"The infighting on our side is just talk. It could go on for centuries, and I do not expect the kind of torture that Zeus has inflicted on his own wife to happen here. If you could have a messenger come to Barbieria with some means of persuading the more honorable Asgardians to take your side… I do not expect Tyr or Baldur to join us. Maybe Thor might, but… I just need Odin to be convinced. Then, at the very least, no one will stop the Valkyrie from joining you."

The next image to appear is Zeus' head. It's just as you saw in the cloud, including the cracked forehead with brains coming out.

"Oh!" says Phœbe, whose startled movement causes you to fly from your human head.

embed

As Sapphire catches you, Phœbe goes on, "I was just trying to think of what more we can tell Brunhild about Zeus. Then I remembered what he looked like. He's scary!"

Ireth said:
Sigrlinn gawps at her newfound ability (though she figures it's temporary as long as she's in Phoebe's body), and can't help but smile a bit at hearing her friend's voice again, just like she remembers it. She sobers quickly at Brynhild's message, only to squeak in fright as Zeus' image apears. Phoebe jolts and she goes flying, but Sapphire catches her.

"Thanks," Sigrlinn says, as her heartbeat slows down. She takes a few deep breaths, then looks back at Artemis.

"The way I see it, we have a few options. If I remember right, the van Donk sisters wanted to go north -- maybe they'd be willing to carry a message. Or Kell and I could go ourselves. The trouble there will be with not letting Loki or anyone allied with him recognize me. I don't know what he left me alive for, but I don't want to end up in his clutches if he finds me. Then again, if I'm stuck in this body for a while, recognition wouldn't be an issue."

She glances toward Kell's body again. "Of course, if Kell and I are going to go, we need to wake her up first. Or resurrect her, or whatever you want to call it."

Artemis is fine with all of your ideas. "Maybe you can find these Van Donk Sisters and travel together. If Zeus and Loki both see you as the enemy, it doesn't matter what part of the world you're in… but it's true you might be safe in a wingless fairy's body. You won't draw a whole lot of attention.

"Before you leave—with a small army of nymphs to protect you, I assure you—is there anything else you wish to ask me?"

Sigrlinn thinks for a moment. "Honestly... the main thing I can think of is something I'm not sure I have the right to ask. And I'm not sure you could answer if I did." Knowing why she was chosen to deliver that message over anyone else in Barbieria might be nice... but then again, maybe she'll find that out for herself in the future.

As for the other questions that soon start welling up, those might be best left for when and if she sees Brynhild again.

As you hesitate to ask your question, Aphrodite herself storms in. She informs you that Helix is ready. "She is my baby sister," she says. The goddess then lets out a self-depreciating laugh adding, "Whether she likes it or not."

Sapphire tries to get Phœbe to follow, but Phœbe tells her, "I can't." Then she says to you, "I can only move my—I mean your… I can only move your head and arms, Sigrlinn. I don't know what went wrong, but Kelleia might die if you don't get going."

Aphrodite holds the door open for you. It occurs to you that a simple thing like opening a door by yourself is an impossible feat for a little fairy body. And you might also be wondering why Phœbe is having trouble controlling your human body, and maybe you can afford to stand around pondering all this—but Kell can't!

Sigrlinn looks up as Aphrodite comes in, and winces when Phoebe says she can't bring Sigrlinn's body along. She takes a deep breath and looks up at the two goddesses. "Then I trust you to keep my body safe for me."

She gives them both a quick curtsy, then hurries out the door as fast as Phoebe's tiny legs will carry her. If only she knew how to fly!

Artemis is already waiting by the cart when you get there… which is funny, because she was just in the room. You didn't even see her pass you.

She cups her hands, apparently offering you a lift to Helix's mane.

Sigrlinn hops up into Artemis' hands, not bothering to question how she got outside so fast. Probably a goddess thing. When Sigrlinn is level with Helix's mane, she clings to it with all her strength, waiting for Helix to move.

Artemis tells you, "You wanted to know why we chose you. Because you are everything my father is not. Even in the meek body of a wingless fairy, you are selfless and brave. My father is a mighty coward who loves nothing more than his own power."

Aphrodite rides in the carriage. When you look back, you see she has Kell's head in her lap. She is stroking the nymph's hair and saying something, but you can't hear anything other than Helix's thunderous hoofbeats.

It doesn't take long to discover that Buck and Vin already set sail at dawn. Dusk is approaching now.

Those who enjoyed a day of sunbathing in the nude (on Prude Beach) are now gathering their belongings and heading to the Sunset Strip.

Two women remain nude, but they don't have a need for clothing. P3N-N1 and K3L-L3.14 (Penni and Kell-Pi) immediately recognize their boss' wife. The metallic maidens approach…

Sigrlinn smiles briefly at Artemis' words, but her thoughts throughout the ride are all of Kell and her safety. When Helix finally stops, Sigrlinn climbs up to the top of his head so the metal maidens can see her better.

"Please help! It's Kell!" She points wildly back at the cart.

Sigrlinn follows by the fastest means possible, and stares in awe at the machine, bursting with questions but holding her silence for fear of distracting the others. What is that thing, and how does it work? Will it save Kell?

What you can be certain of is that the machine beeps a lot.

Kell-Pi lays down beside Kelleia. She says, "There is a 58.33% chance your friend will be fully functional again. You may sit on her pillow or mine, or anywhere on either mattress. It will not disrupt the process. Now, if you excuse me, I must enter Sleep Mode in order to help."

The Iron Maiden appears to shut down. Tubes attach themselves to her right wrist. Tiny globes of light, like phosphorus, travel through the tubes. There is a tube attached to Kell's left wrist. Blood travels through that one.

BEEP, says the machine. Neither Kell nor Kell-Pi are saying anything at the moment. Nor does anyone else, and it seems everyone else left. So you're alone with your friend, whose odds of survival are apparently better than 50%. You might suppose that's better than being worse than 50%.

Ireth

Mythic Scribe
Sigrlinn sits on Kell's pillow and pulls her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms tight around them. 58.33%... that's definitely better than it could be. But that other 41.67% is worrying.

Sigrlinn takes a deep breath and shuts her eyes, wanting to pray but unsure of who to direct her prayer to. Especially with two gods right here in the mansion. But then she thinks of Brynhild, and how she watches over those who die in battle... surely it wouldn't be amiss to ask her friend for help. And if Kell doesn't make it, maybe she could become a valkyrie.
