It was Algernon's plan, so he will have grabbed the thing if no one else did. Probably while Cadell was trying to chase down our psycho hobbit. And then would have taken a couple minutes to modify it in whatever way Cadell decides works for him so that it can actually be used rather than just hauled around—whether before crossing or after, however the timing on that works out.

You want it lashed to your shield, or you want to go with the forearm-through-the-foramen-magnum idea?

(Though now that I've looked up the name of that opening to refresh my memory… we gotta go with that one. Forearm up foramen? It don't get no better than that. )

Cool. In that case, Algernon will remove the spinal cord and other impedimentia, scoop out the brains (doubt Sir Cadell wants that all over his arm… yuck), and chips the hole wider if necessary to make it fit over the stump. We can pack some rags or other scraps inside and around the hole to make it more comfortable and stable. As with the prosthesis, "comfortable" is going to be relative here… but at least in this case, the least comfortable part (the hole) is going to be down around your vambrace, so that part shouldn't be a problem—no chafing and such. And since the opening is near the back of the skull, most of the weight will be below it, so it shouldn't shift around much, either.

Not sure how large the thing is: I'm guessing it's at least the size of a small shield, quite possibly a large one. Hopefully, Steerpike will allow you to use it as a shield for AC purposes. Assuming anything we face is willing to get near enough to you to attack, that is.

I can't wait to see the reaction from the trogs the first time you lift that up and present it to them as our battle totem.… :D

I know, right? :D I'm tempted to come up with something suitably badass for Cadell to shout when we face the trogs, but unfortunately I think his code prevents him from boasting. Humility and all that. ^^

Ah, but don't forget he can Inspire his companions. I'd save that for when we actually enter combat, of course (so we get fullest advantage of the bonus), not when we're just trying to terrify the opposition.

Still, I'm quite sure the standard chivalric code allows one to take advantage of opportunities to demonstrate to opponents the folly of their ways. Plus, under "Humility," it says "A knight values the contributions of others and their deeds of renown. Telling the deeds of others glorifies the office of knighthood." So sounds to me like as long as you're bragging about what your buddies did, it's cool. ;)

Well, I do get the ability to Demoralize my enemies as distinct from the ability to Inspire my allies, but that's not for a few levels yet (level four, I think). Cadell has a fair ways to go before we reach that point. (Assuming he stays a knight for the entire time. I'm still not sure what would happen if he were to reject the office of knighthood upon learning he's exiled [if I decide to be mean and actually go that route]. I asked Steerpike about that. but he hasn't given me an answer yet.)

Yeah. Her souvenirs from battle so far:

  • Stone knife (given to Mauve because it's actually useful to her)
  • Wolf-skull helmet (not sure if it's useful other than as a helm)
  • Monster teeth (yes a necklace)

All come from opponents Baldhart deemed worthy or dangerous.

I'm also hoping to use some of that hide as armor since my scale armor was punctured, though there should be enough for a few of us to get monster hide armor. I think if she can add the teeth it will look like something out of Monster Hunter.

I guess this^ is close enough to what I mean. The blue hide from the water-based monster and the yellow-brown spiky things, only for Baldy, the spikes are teeth. I don't know if Baldy's share of the treasure can pay for that, or if Burnbright went on a shopping spree, but… yeah. I'm hoping Arn can do something with the hide armor.

@Ireth, if we actually do organized charges, that would be a good time for Inspire. Of course, if you were psychic, you'd have inspired during the six-leg-monster battle. I think there were THREE 15s on the first turn. A 16 would have hit! And when I bounced my sword with 15 to hit on the second turn, my damage roll was 14. That would have been nice. Of course, Inspire affects rolls on the following turn so you can't use it and know if it will benefit.

But a whole line charging—or when the priestess is in melee range (especially of either, or hopefully both, barbarians)—that +1 to hit will be nice to have. At higher levels, we would have an inspiring knight, a demoralizing knight, and two intimidating barbarians (different targets for the barbs). That would really mess with enemy rolls!

Yeah, I really should have thought to take advantage of Inspire that time, like I did with the goblins and wargs. ^^; Oh well. Maybe we'll have better luck this time!

No worries. For each attacker, there's only a 5% chance Inspire will turn a miss into a hit. That's why I said "if you were psychic"—it was a fluke that for two consecutive rounds, Inspire would have significantly increased damage.

Well, psychic or no, it would have been a good thing to try anyway, from a character perspective. That lake monster needed a LOT of damage to go down.

It seemed my guess (50 HP) was fairly accurate. I'm glad Steerpike hinted it was feeling the pain after we inflicted thirty-something damage. I figured it was at least half-dead at that point, which made me more confident that my character wouldn't be a snack.

Curious about the upcoming fight—and actually I was hoping for a place like this, which is full of small encounters. Well… small encounters and a huge, scary monster.

Ooh, indeed. Looking forward to it. ^^ Hopefully Keit and Batos will be able to get out of their cage and help us in the fight! Yay for earning XP right off the bat. ^^

I'm hoping Aliron can use his lock picking skill to get her out. Maybe a STR/Primal check would have done it, but I'd rather let a player who has a proper prison-break skill handle the cage. Baldy already got to have her fun with the first door.
