A quarterstaff does 1d6 damage. You want to put at least 9 points in STR if you plan to hit people, maybe 13. The stronger you are, the more likely you are to hit and the harder you hit.
You would roll like this:
1d20 (with a 9-12 in STR) or 1d20+1 (with a 13-15 is STR) - this determines whether you hit or not. You don't know the number you need, but with weaker enemies, a 12 tends to work. We fought a huge monster that required a 16 to hit. Steerpike knows the number. The rest of us figure it out through trial and errer. (You wouldn't believe how many of us rolled 15s against that huge monster!)
To roll damage, it's:
1d6 (with a 9-12 in STR) or 1d6+1 (with a 13-15 in STR) - this means IF you hit, you inflict 1-6 damage or 2-7 damage if you have the strength bonus.
If you have a STR penalty, you could roll 1d20-1 / 1d6-1 - meaning that your weak character has a greater chance of missing, and damage is 0-5, so even if you hit there's a 17% chance the attack is so weak it doesn't hurt (0 damage)!
Here's how my character rolls - she's level 2, so she gets a hit bonus now:
1d20 + hit bonus + strength
2d6 (two-handed sword) + strength
And for the occasional strength check:
1d20 + level + strength + Primary Instinct (barbarian skill)
Your druid might do wisdom checks, which would be 1d20 + 1 (level) + WIS bonus (assuming you have 13 or more points in WIS).
