Final Fantasy Reimagined: J-RPG+Western RPG=Awesome?

Some complain that these Western games all follow the same tired tropes of fantasy though.  Generic monsters, a world that needs to be saved, variations of the same classes and skills.

I personally love both types of games, so I wonder what they’d be like if combined?  Would they be like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup?  Or more like a fried pickle sundae?

In regards to possible complaints from both sides of the pond, I’d like to propose a type of game that would appeal to both types of fantasy gamers.

Fantasy Video Games – Distraction or Inspiration?

One of the most important – and difficult – tasks is to make writing a priority.  There are so many other things in life that can distract you from your work, including family and career responsibilities.

On November 11, a new distraction arrived on my doorstep: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.  I’ve been waiting for this game with almost painful anticipation, and thus far it delivers.  It’s intelligent, immersive, gorgeous and highly addictive.  And yes, I fully expect it to suck up a massive amount of my free time.  But is that really a problem?

Are Magic Systems a Distraction?

spell compendiumA fellow writer shared his dilemma with me.  He and his partner were starting a new project, and had invested much time in developing a magic system.  He had shared it with me before, and I was intrigued by their original spin on magic and spell-casting.

But then something happened.  While flipping through the channels, they came across a television series in which characters were using magic.  And to my friend’s horror, they were using virtually the same magic system that he had just spent months developing.

Understandably, this felt like a major setback.  But was it?
