Died today at age 78 of cirrhosis of the liver. Wrote close to 80 books. Creator of Hanse Shadowspawn, who he wrote in his Thieve's World books and stories.
'Thieves World' was one of the original 'shared worlds', more or less created by committee. The saying was 'you wrote your first TS story for fun...and your second for revenge.' The creators horribly abused each others characters.
But yes, Hanse Shadowspawn was an old favorate of mine.
I loved Shadowspawn, wonderful character; I even used him as an NPC in AD&D. He made a great thief in that as well and all my crew loved his character. The Thieve's World series was one of the best and a fabulous idea to get different authors to write different stories all in the same setting.
