I do like the medieval style of those pictures, though I'm not all that sure Middle Earth's setting was supposed to resemble that of the Middle Ages.

Those are in the style of religious icons. I sometimes attend a Byzantine Rite church (it's Eastern Catholic for those unfamiliar) and the whole building is decorated like that. No statutes like Roman Catholic churches. It's quite beautiful. To see Lord of the Rings illustrated that way... all I can say is that I hope Tolkien got to see them. He truly would have appreciated them, at least as a Catholic but likely also as an author.
